  1. I don't think an objective observer would look at this team and conclude that third base and first base were the things that needed fixing.
  2. Merloni works for NESN. FSG owns NESN. He absolutely has a reason to be biased.
  3. There is not all that much difference between teams . So, it is not that difficult to turn things around quickly. When Dombrowski took over, he was able to assess just what the problems were and what was needed to correct them. He acted aggressively. He had a good sense of who was expendable and who was a keeper. The turnaround was immediate. Right now, it doesn't take a genius to see what the problems are. It is obvious to all. You have to be aggressive. Can't be afraid of making a mistake. And the owner has to be willing to spend more , if necessary. It can be done and done quickly.
  4. Whatever the budget is, you still need a guy who can evaluate talent and knows what it takes to build a contender. The last two years , the Sox had a pretty high payroll for a last place team. You can't blame all that on the budget.
  5. I think everyone is trying to win. It's just that some guys are not going to be 100 % into it when the situation is pretty much hopeless. Losing becomes a habit.
  6. The trend in baseball seems to be hiring a baseball guy for manager , but a more studious , business type for CBO. It will be interesting to see what happens here.
  7. On the other hand, reading the family feuds on here is usually more interesting than a discussion about Joe Schmedley's OAA and BTV rating.
  8. The Sox are officially a last place team again. It is no longer possible to catch the Yankees.
  9. These guys are striking out at an alarming rate.
  10. I don't think it serves any purpose to have slots for your starting pitchers. It's not as if you can pick the number one guy to pitch every game and the other guys are backups. They will all pitch in rotation.
  11. Not taking anything away from Martin , I think Devers was the MVP .
  12. Devers is the MVP of this year's Red Sox. Easily the best, most valuable and most important player on the team. That is not to say he had a really good year. He will not get many votes for A.L. MVP.
  13. It looks to me that Story has trouble with velocity. If that is actually the case, it is a problem because there is more velocity in the game today than there ever has been.
  14. To sum up, bring in some really good players and we can have a really good team. Kind of like what Dombrowski did when he took over.
  15. There surely is a difference of opinion as to just how important the manager is. Some think the manager makes very little difference. Most fans think that the home town manager is a dunce , and they could do much better. But that is mostly second guessing. Then you see examples like the Phillies firing Girardi and promoting Thomson. The improvement was immediate and significant . And there is Kevin Cash , who seems to get a thousand percent out of what he has to work with. I think he, more than anyone, is responsible for the Ray's success.
  16. I think there was some tension between Cora and Bloom . And Alex became frustrated at times and was not at his best this season. But he has shown that he knows how to manage successfully. The failure of this year's team is largely on Bloom.
  17. The Sox are 21 games out. The expanded playoffs always provide hope. Maybe MLB will add a fourth wild card before long.
  18. The Mets and Padres are good teams that are having bad seasons. The Mets lost Edwin Diaz ,arguably the best closer in the game , for the entire year due to an injury in the WBC. That disrupted their whole bullpen. Things went downhill. It is hard to know what went wrong with the Padres. They have far too much talent to have had such a poor year. But it is a fact that the best players will cost more money. And they will want the security of longer contracts. Trying to build a great team cheaply , while depending on your farm may sometimes work for a while , but it is a very tricky and tedious process. And how many fans have the patience for that ?
  19. In the words of the late, great wrestling manager, Bobby " The Brain " Heenan ; " Win if you can, lose if you must, but always cheat. " Words to live by.
  20. Have to give the Yankees credit again. Eliminated yesterday, they played the regulars in the cold and rain today and beat wild card contender, Arizona.
  21. Watching Sopranos reruns lately ?
  22. Meaningless game. Cold and wet. Everyone wants to go home. No reason not to call the game.
  23. So tired of seeing the same ending play out in so many close football games. It has become very predictable. The team that is leading is invariably unable to move the ball , get a first down and run out the clock to close the show. They punt with a minute or so left. Then the defense comes on and is unable to stop the frantic, last minute drive and blows the game. Whether it's the NFL or college, it's the same thing over and over again.
  24. This season was a disappointing failure. Chaim Bloom's tenure was a disappointing failure. That is why he is gone.
  25. No play-in games. They have various tie breakers to cover all the different possible scenarios.
