  1. Like most every team, the Sox could use more pitching, both starting and relief. With the team very much in the race, the idea of being sellers is completely out of the question.
  2. The " City Connect" uniforms are just another MLB gimmick to separate the fans from their money. Kid: " Dad, I need one of those green caps now." Dad: " Okay, Jimmy" .
  3. When deadline trades happen, they are often a surprise. The many fantasy trade proposals and rumors seldom actually happen. It has to be a stressful time for the players and their families. Not knowing where you will be ten days from now.
  4. Just for information: MLB Extra Innings is having a free preview all weekend. You can watch the Red Sox vs Cubs and all MLB games for free. The channels will vary depending on your service provider. And they have a discount price for the rest of the regular season.
  5. Not even one mention of the All Star Game. Things sure have changed.
  6. Motivation, drive, purpose , determination and will are also a part of sports. Sometimes, as much as ability. Incidentally, Craig Breslow was a part of that 2013 championship team.
  7. 2013 had a special significance. It started with the terrorist bombing at the marathon. Then the Boston Strong slogan and the dugout display. The Red Sox became a team on a mission , led by David Ortiz , with the goal of bringing a championship to the city. Many a player exceeded expectations and came up big when needed. It culminated in a World Series Championship year.
  8. Every entity has it's own culture. TalkSox is no exception. A fairly small group of posters comprise the majority of the content. These posters will argue a bit with each other, but they are actually pretty like- minded. Cut from the same cloth, if you will. They would tend to agree on most issues, whether baseball or anything else. And they definitely are pro analytics and metrics in baseball, much more so than the average baseball fan would be. So, when someone comes on with an opposing opinion, they will kind of team up and go after the would be maverick. The condescending attitude appears. A different school of thought is not very welcome. I'm not complaining about it. It's just my observation and my opinion.
  9. The Red Sox are legitimate World Series contenders. We have to trust Breslow to do the smart thing when it comes to deadline deals. I think he is up to the task.
  10. Is Rafaela riding a hot streak or is he blossoming into a legitimate star? That is what the team needs to find out. Meanwhile, there is no urgency to trade an outfielder. Injuries and slumps will take care of playing time concerns.
  11. When Devers was traded, I think his teammates reaction was kind of interesting. None of them would bad-mouth Rafael at all, but there didn't seem to be anyone that was all that upset about his departure. And he was their best hitter and longest tenured player .
  12. I wouldn't be surprised if this is being driven by the increased amount of gambling on baseball. If MLB was run intelligently, they would have only the best umpires behind the plate, not rotating as they do. Pay them more if need be.
  13. Nobody who knows baseball would have said the Red Sox had something like a 15% chance of making the playoffs earlier in the season. They are playing around with numbers and projections, but they know little to nothing about baseball. But I will give them credit. They are making money and they have a lot of people fooled .
  14. When fangraphs changes the odds they are telling you that they were wrong before , so now you should believe them this time. They really have no idea what is going to happen.
  15. Defensive metrics are questionable at best. I have yet to see a good explanation of how they are derived. The one I usually hear is that there are trained experts who actually watch every pitch of every game to develop the data used in these metrics. That seems preposterous. Through experience, I have become very skeptical whenever I hear things like " experts agree ", " studies have shown" or " data suggests ". I can watch the games and see for myself that Rafaela is a terrific centerfielder.
  16. I guess the ever-changing fangraphs odds on the Sox making the playoffs will be going down once again. This could be of interest to any of the folks who actually care about nonsense like fangraphs projections and probabilities.
  17. While it is too early to evaluate the Devers trade, the results so far show that the Sox are doing better without him, while he has done little to help the Giants. That is not meant to be piling on Rafael, just an objective appraisal.
  18. Having too many good players is not a problem. Finding playing time for them is something that will work itself out. There should be no urgency to make a trade. If Breslow gets an offer he can't refuse, then go for it. But be careful and don't be in a hurry. He may be able to get a good pitcher for minor league prospects.
  19. Not good news on Dobbins. Torn ACL.
  20. Fairbanks is a pretty good closer, but he found out last night that closing ain't easy. The Sox are fortunate to have Chapman, who is having what is probably a Hall of Fame career despite often not getting the recognition that he should. He is one of the best to ever do it.
  21. Attention please: The driver will now slow down the bandwagon long enough for all of the Fenway (un) faithful, Nervous Nellies, wannabe deadline sellers and fickle minded, sky is falling, gloom and doomers to be able to climb back on board.
  22. July 25: Red Sox trade Jarren Duran to the Twins for Joe Ryan. July 28: Joe Ryan exits his Red Sox debut in the fifth inning with what is being called " forearm tightness ".
  23. People have their own reasons for liking or disliking a player. It's not always about performance. No matter what happens, Devers will have his supporters and his detractors. I personally think the team will miss his hitting, but is really better off without him, all things considered.
  24. Sox have a lot of winning momentum going into this series. Playing fast, loose and with a ton of energy and confidence.
  25. With each passing day, it becomes more and more apparent that the team is better off without Devers.
