  1. Maybe Werner was talking about full throttle with the concerts at Fenway, not the baseball team.
  2. It was pretty obvious that there was tension between Bloom and Cora. Not the ideal situation . It probably could have been improved by winning , but the team was not winning. Cora survived. Bloom did not.
  3. It was a misunderstanding with the trade of Anderson Espinosa. Someone said he was the next Pedro. But they didn't mean Hall of Famer , Martinez. They meant Pedro Beato. So far, Espinosa has not even lived up to that modest projection. But we are still mopping up the tears that were shed when he was dealt.
  4. Home grown pitching is just one aspect of a winning team. Nothing wrong with acquiring pitching via trades or free agency. The Sox have won championships without a whole lot of contribution from home grown pitchers.
  5. I was just responding to your statement that the Sox were not as successful as the Rays .
  6. To me, it's not personal or about personalities. It's about results. About winning baseball. We have covered the farm thing more than old MacDonald. Not interested in discussing that some more.
  7. What a stupid response.
  8. I think you mean that he nearly traded Mookie, not Sale. And you keep posting that as if it is a known fact. But I don't recall hearing anything about it at the time. The fact is, the Sox were having great success, but for some reason, decided to change course. Now they look like a cheap Ship of Fools.
  9. I think I have seen several hundred posts advocating for trading Duran. In my humble opinion, that would be a big mistake. Let's see what happens.
  10. Under Dombrowski, the Sox won the A.L. East an unprecedented three straight years ,with one world championship, without emulating the Rays. They then slipped to third place ( although still a competitive , above .500 team ) and Dombrowski was axed. At that point, the team embarked on its current course , starting with the bizarre trading of one of their all time best and most popular players. And the results speak for themselves.
  11. Trying to emulate the Rays is why the Sox are in the position they are in today. And it is why there is so much dissension in the fan base.
  12. Dave Dombrowski has taken four different teams to the World Series, winning it twice. He is a two time baseball executive of the year. On a possible Hall of Fame path. Comparing him to a neophyte like Bloom is ridiculous.
  13. As stated before, the Rays are a cheap organization. They do have a great manager. And a few good players. But they could not draw flies at a strawberry festival. They have no championships. Billy Beane is another fraud who has ruined a once proud franchise. He is the flim flam man. " Money Ball " scam. Zero championships, just like the Rays. A fan base that is apathetic. Move on to Vegas. Tampa Bay and Oakland are both just small time Charlies. The Boston Red Sox should never try to imitate these organizations. The owner is beyond wealthy. Don't be cheap. Be the big market, big time team that they are supposed to be.
  14. The Tampa Bay Rays have existed for 26 years. They have won two A.L. pennants and zero World Series in those years. They have made the playoffs for five straight years . ( It should be noted that it is easier to make the playoffs than it used to be. ) While their front office has received a lot of praise, they have a manager ( Kevin Cash) who is arguably the best in the game. They are widely known as a cheap outfit. They are not an attraction anywhere. They could not even draw flies at a Florida strawberry festival. In short, they are not an organization that the Boston Red Sox should be trying to emulate.
  15. The Sox still have a chance to be competitive, but a lot of things have to happen. Continued development from Bello, Casas and Duran. Good years from Giolito and Pivetta. More good work from the bullpen. Story starting to earn his money. At least one of the kids like Abreu and Rafaela doing well. And so forth. It's a lot to ask for, but it's all we can hope for at the moment. There are always surprises in baseball. Don't give up yet.
  16. Excerpt from Wall Street Management 101: A handbook for hedge fund managers and other unscrupulous types. " Wring every last drop from an asset, then unload it. " (John Henry has a copy on his yacht.)
  17. The Red Sox are The Olde Towne Team to us. To John Henry, they are just another investment. Just like his hedge funds.
  18. Definitely restless. I think that is why they are going to have to do something significant. Let's see what happens with Snell.
  19. I still think the Sox will make a couple of noteworthy moves before the Winter Weekend.
  20. Hugh, With all respect, who the hell are you to be giving out sarcastic awards and insulting other posters ?
  21. Folks who are deep into analytics say ( somewhat smugly) that a pitcher's won/loss record is meaningless . That is where I have a problem. One could say that if all the various metrics do not translate into wins, then they are meaningless as well. A great coach once said, " Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing". (I do think that ERA should be looked at along with the won/loss record when evaluating a pitcher. )
  22. Of course. But in the long run the pitcher who gives up one run will be a winner. The pitcher who gives up six runs will not.
  23. We have been over this too many times. No need to do it again. I'll just say this: Winning is the ultimate objective in any sport or any competition. Pedro and Clemens were proven winners. They had an obsession with beating the competition that helped them become all time greats. A couple of isolated examples doesn't change that. Baseball is a team sport, but the pitcher is a major part of that team.
  24. Imanaga wasn't even on the radar long enough to earn a cute nickname. But it should be fun to watch him pitch with the wind blowing out at Wrigley.
  25. Red, guys like us will just have to watch and enjoy the games in our ignorance. We can know about useless stats like a pitcher's won/loss record and ERA , but we will never be able to figure out his xFIP. That we have to be told by experts who have gone through many hours of specialized training. In short, the eye test matters, but not your eye test.
