  1. We can't omit Pat Mahomes , who is having a sensational year in the NFL . His dad did a stint with the Sox .
  2. One of the all time great football names . Mah new Two Eee ah sah soap oh .
  3. If you had stayed away from the hysterical game threads , it would not have happened. There was never any real reason to worry. Seriously, glad you are feeling better.
  4. I think we can say without doubt that Mookie is a more desirable asset than Harper or Machado. He will get more than they will . Maybe quite a bit more .Trout is the only comparable future free agent. Assuming the Yanks get Machado and the Dodgers get Harper , the Sox would certainly be the front runners for Mookie. I don't see any other team having a realistic shot.
  5. The interesting thing about Robertson is that he didn't have an agent . He represented himself.
  6. Yeah . They are definitely the best of the rest . I wouldn't be satisfied with one of them unless it was in addition to one of the top tier guys .
  7. About the only top guys left are Kimbrel , Britton and Ottavino . ( No doubt someone will mention a few more ) The Yankees are rumored to be going hard after Britton. He will probably cost less than Kimbrel , but more than Ottavino . I think we will hear something soon. Personally , I think Barnes and Brasier would be more suited to the seventh and eighth innings . Wright is kind of a wild card . The way the game is today , you really need at least three or four quality arms in the pen . Using starters in relief is really only something you would do in the post season.
  8. It was 99 years ago today that Harry Frazee earned his place in the annals of low life scum by selling Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees for $ 125,000 . ( Plus a $ 350,000 loan.) It was reported that some Yankee fans feared that the Bambino acquisition would hamstring the team financially for years to come. On the bright side ; it was said that No - No Nanette was a helluva good play .
  9. Phils sign Robertson . One more quality reliever off the market.
  10. Normally, I am the optimist . Calm and confident while some others are sweating bullets , nervous , worried , cursing and fearing the worst. One eye on the Yankees and the other eye twitching. However, what I see here is a bit of false bravado. Should the Yanks acquire Machado , Paxton and a quality bullpen piece while the Sox lose Kimbrel and Kelly without getting any significant replacement for the bullpen, it is definitely a cause for concern. We should not pretend otherwise. I do realize it is still early , but I wouldn't want to wait until mid season to address it.
  11. Yep . We don't know what is going on behind the scenes. Sometimes it is hard to be patient.
  12. Yeah. Maybe it was the divorce. We can speculate. He went downhill pretty fast . I wouldn't use him as an expert on the subject. As for Boxberger , he is not trash. He has had his moments. However , his numbers do not match up well against a guy like Kimbrel. I would hope for someone better than him. I just value the position of closer more than you do . This is not going to change. No sense in debating further.
  13. Thanks for the somewhat condescending reply . I do not advocate breaking the bank to sign Kimbrel. But I do agree that we need a good , proven alternative to close games . I think it is a vital role . Actually, I was reacting to the notion that the difference between a great closer ( and Kimbrel is one of the all time great ones ) and a quote " bad closer " is only three saves a year . If my reply upset you or seemed childish to you , I sincerely apologize.
  14. With Gregorious out for maybe half the season , Tulowitzki is a good low cost, low risk pickup . It doesn't particularly worry me , but not a bad move by the Yankees.
  15. Too much . This is why I have to get out of here . Absolutely ridiculous to think that the difference between a great closer and some mediocrity is just three saves . That could very possibly happen in just the first week . It's kind of like saying that the difference between a .300 hitter and a .200 hitter is just one lousy single in ten at bats. One can always find some statistical justification for nonsense . Mark Wohlers is a great example of having the mentality to be a closer. His confidence, career and almost his life were destroyed by one memorable blown save . And he could throw as hard as Aroldis Chapman .
  16. Looks like it. It worked out okay for us last year.
  17. No . Things don't always happen as quickly as we might think. These are major business transactions.
  18. All in all , we've done pretty well . The results are more important than the process.
  19. Any reliever can get three outs with a three run lead . Why pay for a top closer ? Any triple A slugger can hammer a meatball. Why pay J.D. Martinez to DH ? Any high school kid can catch a fly ball . Why pay JBJ to play center ? Any Red Sox board poster can be a great baseball executive. Why pay Dave Dombrowski ? The answer to all of these : Because you are looking for excellence. If you can find enough excellence , you will have a great team. Maybe a World champion.
  20. Criticizing the Cabrera contract is just another way of taking a shot at Dombrowski. D.D. has had a fantastically successful three year run with the Sox . But the small time Charlies still long for the days of Cherington. Bottom line results mean nothing to them . What are you going to do ? They think they reinvented the game of baseball.
  21. It is very hard to stay consistently on top without spending big bucks. Of course, mistakes will be made . You just have to deal with it , keep them to a minimum and don't get gun shy about spending. The owners will decide what their budgetary limits are . If , as some misguided folks want , you acquire a bunch of second rate players, you will soon become a second rate team. Red Sox Nation does not want a second rate team.
  22. Human nature being what it is , it is easy to have our favorites and get attached to some of them . Being totally objective is often hard to do . But a G.M. really has to strive for total objectivity. Along with talent evaluation, it is important to success. With Mookie, I think we should try hard to keep him . It may not be as hard as you might think, because there are not many teams that can afford to go that big and are also places where he might want to go . However, as stated before, you can't go crazy . There is no sense having a mega star if he is surrounded by a group of low pay mediocrities.
  23. Excellent selling job by Boras . He still has it .
  24. You say " bad closer " . I say " jabroni." I say it takes a certain mentality to close. You say it doesn't. Whatever. And you really don't get why I am dropping the topic. You are trolling. And it is boring and ridiculous. No problem.
  25. The eminent Mark Wohlers notwithstanding , the difference between a great closer and a jabroni has to be more than three saves . I don't think I want to continue this discussion. It has gotten too ridiculous.
