  1. Ottavino is maybe the only other one who could realistically be called " top. " And even that might be a stretch.
  2. It is not recommended for everybody in every walk of life or every situation.
  3. . We don't have access to the bottom line. I would venture a guess that , despite the high payroll, the Sox turned an impressive net profit last year . Don't worry so much about tomorrow. Tomorrow never comes. Win now !!!!
  4. The thing is ; some of us think the bullpen is not the place to economize. Much too important.
  5. Trading JBJ would be another step toward breaking up the best team in baseball. It makes no sense to me . Perhaps they are looking ahead to his free agency and dealing with Boras . But it certainly would not help the Sox defend their title in 2019.
  6. It makes perfect sense. What D.D. has done is assemble the best team in baseball. He has been praised for it . If what he is now doing is starting to disassemble it , people will tend to lose faith. Not at all amazing.
  7. Britton is one of the best . I would love to have him on the Red Sox .
  8. I understand all of that . However, we have seen the likes of Britton, Familia , Miller and Robertson sign elsewhere. The options are getting fewer and fewer . Now we are seeing names like Brach suggested. That would be taking the chance of wasting a terrific lineup by blowing late leads . If that is all we can afford, if that is the plan , so be it .
  9. I just think it will be very difficult to repeat with a second rate bullpen. We lost Kimbrel and Kelly . So far , we have done nothing to fill their shoes. More and more of the top tier relievers are now off the board. I hope that D.D. has a plan. That is all .
  10. Can we match up against the Yankees late in games ? Barnes , Brasier and maybe Cody Allen . Versus Chapman , Betances and Britton. Hmmmmm . I don't know .
  11. But that is what people are calling for . They want to stop spending.
  12. You need talent to win . You need to spend to get and keep talent . Saying " I think this and that , I expect this and that , this might happen, this could happen, so and so will have a good year , I think we'll be fine , etc ." will not get it done. It just doesn't work like that .
  13. Playoffs or no playoffs, John Henry will be all right. No go fund me pages needed.
  14. I mentioned the Phils yesterday. You said , no way ." They are already overcrowded in the bullpen. " I think the Phillies are itching to spend. And Harper and Machado are not looking likely for them. They might decide to build a strong bullpen.
  15. Soria signed with the A's.
  16. The Cards already signed Miller .
  17. Hard to predict the market here . Two of the big spending teams , the Yanks and Dodgers are set at closer . The Yanks are also set at the set up role. They would still like to strengthen the pen , but for how much ? I don't think teams like the Cards or Braves are going to spend too much . Maybe if the Phillies strike out with Harper and Machado , they will spend big on the bullpen. The Sox did well playing the waiting game last year . Maybe it will work again .
  18. Well Tony LaRussa is Dombrowski's right hand man . He is a Hall of Famer with four World Series rings . Four times manager of the year . Managed six All Star teams. Third winningest manager in history . I would think his opinion would have some value .
  19. I am surprised that no one has challenged the draft on constitutional grounds . You could argue that the employer is MLB or NFL or NBA , but that can certainly be debated . Each team is an independently owned franchise . And some of them are much more desirable places to work than others . We now have free agency . There is no more reserve clause . So you can't force these guys to work for one team until that team gets rid of them . But you can still do that for a few years at first ? Telling them they can go to Japan if they don't like it doesn't sound too good . I don't know if a legal challenge would be successful , but it would be interesting .
  20. That is a lot of " coulds " . The list of available options is slowly shrinking. I would imagine that some negotiating is going on even as we speculate . I still think Ottavino is who we will end up with . He can probably be had for less money and fewer years than Kimbrel or Britton.
  21. The NFL has a different situation. They have the salary cap. They don't have to support a minor league system or scout other countries for talent. They get the vast majority of their players trained and pretty much ready made right from our universities. On the other hand , they only have eight home dates a season . They make a fortune from TV money. The kid from Oklahoma might be better off in baseball, both financially and health wise. However, he probably has a better chance of making it in the NFL than in MLB.
  22. Using your best reliever to escape a jam in an earlier inning is something that will probably be tried more often as more managers are being more or less told what they should do . It will be interesting to see if it catches on . There is certainly a difference of opinion between the old and new schools on the relative difficulty of getting the last three outs . When Tony LaRussa was questioned as to whether Lee Smith deserved to be in the Hall of Fame ; he answered by saying that some people did not understand the difficulty in closing .
  23. It is kind of a strange and unique system if you think about it . The players most productive years are often their lower paid years . By the time they reach free agency and want the big money , they are often seen as approaching their declining productivity years .
