  1. A difficult decision , but I think it is the correct one . If we are choosing up sides for our teams , all things considered, I would take Swihart over Leon .
  2. Should Bradley leave , I think Betts or Benintendi would move to center . It would be easier to find a corner outfielder or a D.H.
  3. " Sabermetrically sophisticated." I like that .
  4. I think the owners are getting what they wanted . The players are becoming leery of free agency and are much more open to signing extensions. We will have to wait and see if that applies to Mookie too .
  5. Seriously , we should not resent any player doing what they feel is best for them . As we have heard a million times, baseball is a business. There is no crying in baseball. And there is no loyalty in baseball either. That goes for the teams and the players as well .
  6. I have been called a lot of things , but that is the first time being called a Yankees fan . I cannot forgive Torrez for coming over from New York and throwing that pitch to Bucky Dent . It added 26 years to the long drought.
  7. Does this work in reverse ? Because I can never forgive Mike Torrez .
  8. I think when MLB managers report to work these days , there is a paper on their desk with a note saying , " This is what the analytics people think you should do today . It's up to you . Do whatever you think is best , but this is highly recommended . "
  9. It makes sense if you think about it . Question : Why isn't Betances pitching ? Answer : Because he is ill .
  10. Theo's analytical acumen was helped in no small measure by Dave Roberts huge , albeit overrated, stolen base and Bill Mueller's and David Ortiz ' great , although imaginary , clutch hits . The legend of Epstein might have been slow to develop if we had been swept by the Yankees in 2004 . Not taking anything away from Theo , but Joe Sixpack remembers the stolen base and the clutch hits far more than the advanced metrics .
  11. It's just my take on the situation......... Overheard conversation between Joe Sixpack and Ferdy Craftbeer : Joe : Do you think Sale will win 20 this year ? Ferdy : Wins and losses are meaningless for a pitcher . Let's look at his fip . Joe : Huh ? By the way , did you see that catch JBJ made last night ? Ferdy : Nice catch , but some others have a better UZR rating . Joe : ???? Hey , I bet Mookie hits .350 this year . Ferdy : Maybe , but batting average really doesn't matter . It might depend on his BABIP . Joe : Oh . Okay . Whatever . How about J.D. ? Great signing , right ? I bet he leads the league in homers . Ferdy: Could happen. But I don't think we will be able to keep him if we reset . Joe : Reset ? Ferdy : Yup . That's the name of the game these days . Joe : See you later Ferdy . When does football start ?
  12. The Sox had the highest payroll and the best team . There is a correlation whether you admit it or not . Quality costs money . Mediocrity is cheaper . Moneyball is for the small time Charlies . Moneyball does not win championships . Of course there are exceptions, but for the most part you get what you pay for . The luxury tax is just a dumb method to deal with the lack of a salary cap . If MLB really wants competitive balance , they need a salary cap , salary floor and an increased minimum wage . Not going to happen . One more thing ; while the geeks may love it , the average fan is turned off by all the analytics and all the financial talk . Not one bit good for the game .
  13. It has been said that you have to spend money to make money . Of course there has to be a limit somewhere . You do eventually hit the point of diminishing returns. Since the owners are not about to open the books for us to see , we really can't be sure what it is . Certainty John Henry has been a much more willing spender than his counterparts.
  14. He had 28 saves for the Mets one year . Of course , that may have been steroid enhanced . I am not a big fan of the guy , but he has the experience and has decent stuff. I am still mystified that we passed on at least a half dozen guys who are better .
  15. Harper got an excellent deal from the Phils . I am sure he is happy with it . He certainly cannot reasonably expect to be paid as much as Trout .
  16. If he stays clean ( a big if ) , I think Mejia has the best chance for success.
  17. Swihart is a 27 year old, switch hitting catcher with a good arm and good speed . He can fill in at other positions and is controlled for four more years at low cost . That , plus the feeling that he has more to offer than we have seen so far , makes it unlikely that he would clear waivers. I would be very surprised if he did .
  18. Harm , Any word on why the Mariners won't give King Felix the honor of the opening day start ?
  19. There is still that lingering feeling that Leon is what he is , but Swihart might have much more to offer if given enough opportunity. That's not to say that it would happen , just that the feeling is there . Hence , the reluctance to deal Swihart.
  20. Mike Brey needs to talk to Muffet McGraw . He might learn something.
  21. To all of my fellow Irish ; Happy St. Paddy's Day ! And to all of you who don't happen to be Irish; don't worry. It's okay . You're okay too .
  22. WPI lost their appeal with the advent of the shot clock. The stall became obsolete.
  23. Just a thought. Why do people get so excited about the NCAA brackets ? It's like if MLB had five wild cards in each league and also allowed all of the minor league pennant winners into the post season playoffs.
  24. The home runs didn't all come when he was actually leading off . And they didn't all stake the Sox to an early lead . You could make a case that the homers would be better with men on base . Just throwing that out there. I am fine with him leading off .
  25. Mookie seems to like leading off and it did work very well last year . I see no reason to change it . Whether you value speed , base running / stealing , batting average or on base percentage ; Mookie is better than Benintendi in every area . I do agree that it really doesn't make a whole lot of difference though .
