  1. The Yankees , for example , have four or five guys in the bullpen who are better than anyone in some teams pen . But it costs money .
  2. No . It's not that simple . What I am saying is that you get what you pay for . Whether it's a left fielder or a relief pitcher . Obviously , a team has a budget , and there are different pay scales at work . But if your plan is to go cheap on the bullpen , or any other area , you will probably not get quality . Just look at some of the bullpens in MLB today . They are terrible . Constant turnover .
  3. Some relievers are good . Some are not . Some position players are good . Some are not . Some starters are good . Some are not . Most bullpens today are not good . The argument was , " don't spend on relievers ." If you go cheap on the bullpen , you will probably get what you paid for . If you went cheap on the outfield , you would get what you paid for . That is what has been happening to many teams . Obviously , you can't have seven or eight well paid guys in the bullpen. But you do need some quality .
  4. Chatham is doing very well at Portland .
  5. Like most things in life , you get what you pay for . I don't see why a reliever would be any different than any other player . Some are good , some are not .
  6. I honestly don't know if I have ever seen so much absolute garbage in the A.L. It is painful to watch some of these teams. I can't picture any scenario where the Sox don't make the playoffs . But the goal has to be winning the division . If the Yankees ever get healthy , it will be an interesting race .
  7. The idea of not spending on relievers is being used by many , if not most , teams . And many , if not most , bullpens absolutely stink .
  8. Can't win this debate . It just comes down to one's point of view . I think you should use your best reliever to close . In a close game , the final three outs are the toughest . That is my feeling , based on experience. In this case , I think Barnes is the pick . Obviously, some disagree .
  9. Quite frankly , I have never had the desire to hug a Red Sox player . Or any player .
  10. How about a round of applause for Rick ( I won't be manager of the year ) Renteria . First , he uses a position player to pitch while down only five runs . Then he leaves poor Banuelos in to be humiliated by giving up ten consecutive hits and nine runs , before finally yanking him . Good job Rick . That's the way to build confidence in a young , " rebuilding " ballclub.
  11. Maybe the farm is not as barren as some thought .
  12. I think Bradley is out again tonight . Probably got a little banged up on Delmonico 's homer .
  13. Forget fangraphs when it comes to odds . Vegas has the Sox as the third choice , behind the Astros and Yankees , to win the A.L. pennant at odds of 9 - 2 . The Rays are 10 - 1 . What with all of the crappy teams in the A.L. , getting at least a wild card seems pretty easy .
  14. Of course not . That's why it's called a laugher . The stress comes in close games . No question.
  15. It is the emotions that create the pressure and stress . It peaks in the ninth inning. In football and basketball, it is the fourth quarter . In golf , the eighteenth hole . In pool , it is the eight ball ( or nine ball ) . In baseball, it' s the ninth inning. I think those who are involved in the games understand that . Others just don't. And that's it . Just a difference of opinion.
  16. We have won the A.L. East three straight years. The goal has to be to win it again .
  17. Bell , with Cleveland I think it was more a case of Tito not wanting to give Allen' s spot to the new guy , Miller . Miller was very willing to go along with anything . Anyway , Andrew Miller was used and abused , and became burnt out . It looks like the Brewers are looking to do the same thing to Hader .
  18. If you don't believe that there is additional pressure pitching the ninth inning , then there is not much left to say . Of course , the Dorito munching nerds in the analytics room can't be expected to understand that . I don't see the new system of using the bullpen catching on all that much . Right now , I don't know if Cora regards Barnes or Brazier as his best reliever . Maybe the nerds know . They will tell him . In nerds we trust .
  19. I think that Barnes is a best choice to close games . He is more the kind of strikeout pitcher that you want in that spot . And just harder to hit than Brasier . The idea of using your best reliever in a so called " high leverage " situation in the 7th or 8th ignores the special pressure of closing . Closing ain't easy . Barnes seems better suited to it than Brasier . What say you ?
  20. Mejia is pitching well at Pawtucket . I would expect to see him at Fenway before long . On the other hand , our young phenom , Feltman , is struggling mightily at Portland .
  21. How much fun was it to watch Alfredo Aceves ? The most interesting man in the world .
  22. Of course , I never said that no game ever changed because of an error . Glad you got it though . You started by blaming pitching from the stretch and defensive alignment . Moonslav seconded the motion . That was nonsense . Then you switched to a whole lot of psychological gobbledygook . The fact still is that the error did not lose the game . The home run did. I'm done .
  23. A whole lot of nothing there . You are right . I can't debate with B.S. What happened , happened . Speculation and wishful thinking does not change reality .
  24. The error was followed by a hit and a home run . Reality .
