  1. People are too funny. The Sox go into the Bronx to play the red hot Yankees , who are playing their best ball of the year. The Sox lose three tough games. A little disappointing , but not too surprising. But fans are plunged into absolute despair. Then home to Fenway to play a team that is tanking the season and total garbage to begin with. We beat up on them , as anyone with even half a brain knew would happen , and the fans are filled with renewed hope and optimism. It really is comical.
  2. In the Yankee game , a ball gets past Dalbec and results in a Yankee rally. Later , Rizzo makes a difficult play look easy to secure the final out . It is things like that that cause angst and resentment in fans. And you can't blame them .
  3. The fans spend plenty to cheer and support this team. We expect management to do better. Saying , " we take responsibility " is meaningless .
  4. While there are , and always will be a few exceptions , for the most part the best teams are the teams with the highest payrolls.
  5. Someday there will be a book about how Bloom was able to build such a loyal following despite never having actually won anything . Of course that could change if he does happen to win one. Stay tuned.
  6. Building a better team for less has become an obsession with a lot of folks. I am sure the billionaire owners appreciate that. I blame Money Ball.
  7. I think the Sox make the playoffs as a wild card. This is largely based on the schedule . While they are struggling against the good teams , they are plenty capable of beating most of the losers they face from here on out. And that should build some , ahem, " momentum" going into the playoffs.
  8. Momentum is real . It exists not only in winning streaks , but sometimes in individual games. It is usually more evident in sports like football and basketball. It has much to do with the attitude and confidence level of the participants. Sooner rather than later , something will happen to break that momentum , but it is a reality. I understand that there will always be the doubting Thomases that will not believe things they can't figure out on paper . And that's okay. But if the players believe it , it has an effect on their performance.
  9. Momentum is playing loose , relaxed and supremely confident . It goes by other names like " red hot " and " on a roll." It doesn't last too long , but it definitely exists and everyone involved knows it. The trouble with the analytics manual is that is is better suited to things like a coin flip , roulette wheel or roll of the dice. It does not understand the human factor.
  10. A baseball season is a long time. Another year of our lives. When a team has a legitimate shot at the brass ring , they should go the extra mile to try and make it happen. Not doing so because of the tax or planning for the future is a major turnoff to many of the players , as well as many of the paying fans.
  11. Charley Blum used car shopping : " I'm looking for a nice car that will get me where I'm going , but I don't want to spend too much ." Used car salesman: " I've got just the car for you . New paint job , pretty good tires , A.C. works . It should get you where you are going. As long as you aren't going too far." Blum : " I'll take it." Salesman. " Sold."
  12. No question , winning a lot of blowout games is an indicator of a team's overall strength.
  13. It would be nice if Plawecki could throw out a base stealer at least once in a while.
  14. Presently, the Yankees look like a better team than the Red Sox. Hopefully , that will change . Hopefully , we can make hay with our relatively soft schedule from here on out.
  15. " Sometimes" and " maybe" are always useful possibilities in rebuttal.
  16. How about Bing?
  17. There surely is luck involved in baseball. Probably more so than in most sports. But a team's record in one or two run games is not entirely luck. It also comes down to the usage and effectiveness of the bullpen.
  18. Manny was a great hitter and likable in a lot of ways. But he did too many things wrong , both on and off the field , to be given too much love and respect.
  19. Tonight is a game that we should win. Heaney is really awful and the Yankee bullpen is tired. No excuse not to win this one.
  20. It seems we have to rely on beating up the bottom feeders and tankers to save the day. Have to thank that imbecile Manfred for the soft schedule to both begin and end the season.
  21. If the season ended now , the Sox would be out of the playoffs. Hard to believe.
  22. It would join a very long list of things that are personal biases.
  23. Sometimes you have to give a guy like Houck a little longer leash. That said , I can't fault Cora's moves today. Whitlock and Taylor have been mostly reliable. Baseball can frustrate you when things don't go according to plan. We always seem to forget that you have two teams competing . It's not all about our guys. And it's not easy.
  24. When a guy throws that hard , you don't have much time to make up your mind. Many strikeouts happen that way.
