  1. In today's baseball , the bullpen is more important than ever. Possibly equal to, or more important, than the starting rotation. There are a ton of young hard throwers who can pitch a clean inning for you. So , it is possible to build a good pen on the cheap. But you have to either be very good or very lucky at assembling the pen that way. You should not be afraid to spend money on the pen if it will improve your chances . No sense having a good rotation if your pen is going to blow it late.
  2. " Some of us are fans of baseball , etc." Could that be any more pretentious? My god.
  3. The Boston Red Sox are a big market , big money team . One of MLBs highest payrolls. A talent laden , star studded lineup. Three years removed from one of the all time great teams. They are not a rag tag , gutty , gritty band of underdogs. Expectations should be high . No excuses if they fall short. Pretending otherwise is a cop out.
  4. You can't win them all.
  5. That is true. Sad , but true.
  6. We need to stop saying things like , " Why , even if we don't make the playoffs , it was a great season. Exceeded all of our expectations , etc. " That is losers talk and a total cop out. You have a shot at the brass ring , you go for it . You don't call it a success if you fail.
  7. I said the Sox would sweep the O's in Boston. I was rebutted by those saying that the percentages were all against it . I was right. I don't like to brag , but I am right quite often.
  8. At least we now get the saving gift from on high. Three more with the O's. Need to sweep them again . Should not be hard to do.
  9. Aaron Boone made one of the strangest moves I have seen all year last night. He took out Holmes , who was absolutely nasty , almost unhittable , to bring in a lefty . With predictable results. Luckily for him , the Sox bullpen promptly gave it back .
  10. So many games come down to a battle of the bullpens. And too often the Sox fall short .
  11. Feel pretty confident about tonight's game . And the easy finishing schedule lies ahead . Relax folks.
  12. The manager makes the decisions. It is up to the players to execute. People forget that the opponent is trying to succeed also . Nothing is that easy. Rizzo doesn't chase many pitches. And Stanton has a ton of power. These guys are making a lot of money for a reason. So easy to second guess .
  13. Blaming Vasquez is always the default option.
  14. No chance that Cora forgot the rule. He simply was banking on Hernandez to get Rizzo out. It didn't happen. The rest , as they say, is history.
  15. I think Cora has done a good job. Much of the criticism is unwarranted. But " manager of the year" ? With a talent laden team that might finish from second to fourth in a five team division? Highly doubtful.
  16. I think Maxie knows that. He just wanted to get the " quivering bowl of jello" quip in there before the season ended. Some of the things Max says are strictly for effect. Not always entirely serious and always subject to change.
  17. Come on. You've done your share of it , and then some ,over the years .
  18. That is why some of us liked Dombrowski . Three straight A.L. East titles over the Yankees. ( And the Rays)
  19. The Dodgers could win 105 games and still have to win a one game play-in with the red hot Cards. That could start some talk about changing the playoff rules.
  20. Mound visit after hitting Rizzo: Cora :" Darwinzon , trust your stuff. Throw your fastball for strikes. Challenge him." Hernandez: " Okay."
  21. Cora was definitely banking on Hernandez getting Rizzo out. You can't want him pitching to Stanton with the bases loaded.
  22. Seattle has six against the Angels and three more with Oakland , so they could get hot while the Yanks and Jays stumble. Can't entirely count the Mariners out .
  23. Loyalty has to go both ways for it to matter. Some folks want it one way.
  24. That is correct. They would have to play one game against each other to get in. No tiebreaker.
  25. Getting a wild card is now almost a certainty. Probably the first wild card and home field for the play-in game. Who will be the opponent? I think the Yankees might be slightly easier to beat than the Blue Jays. It's hard to say. Seattle would be the easiest ( no offense, Harmony) , but they are still a long shot to make it. If the Sox can win it , I think they have a real shot against any of the teams that will be in the post season tournament.
