  1. My feeling is that baseball is just a sport , a game , a diversion , entertainment. A little controversy, a bad strike call , " kill the ump " , an Earl Weaver rant , etc. are all part of the fun. Sometimes, we remember them more than the game itself. There is no real urgency to get everything right. Folks take things too seriously. Personally, I don't care about robot umps . Having them will not ruin the game for me. But I would just as soon keep the robots out of baseball. They are not needed.
  2. The owners and the players are fighting over slices of the pie. No matter what , we are paying for the pie. The whole pie.
  3. So , they still have to have an ump behind the plate. So far , they have not developed a robot that can do the umpire's entire job. Just the ball and strike calls. And we surely can't have the robot take a foul tip to it's robot " brain". Too valuable for that. The umpire is more expendable.
  4. Eh. What's that you say? Robo umps? I think I saw one of those. Not sure.
  5. Cora used his starters out of the bullpen in the 2018 post season as part of the " all hands on deck " approach. It was not really a new strategy. Whether or not it was entirely necessary, it did work. And Cora did get credit for it. It should also be noted that these pitchers almost all had problems with health and productivity in 2019. I don't know if there was a connection there , but these guys are human. They have limitations.
  6. Keeping both J.D. and Schwarber , while a bit redundant, could be a good idea if the Sox are willing to spend what it takes to do it. But the main task this off season has to be improving the pitching, especially the bullpen. In today's game , having a strong and reliable bullpen is absolutely vital.
  7. Hunter Renfroe at bat. Dan Iassonga umping. Renfroe swings and misses at a pitch that may have been a bit outside. Renfroe turns to the ump, " Was that going to be a strike?" Iassonga: " I don't think so. Ask Tobor " (The Fenway robot) . Renfroe takes the next pitch , in the same spot. Called strike three. Renfroe : " That was off the plate too." Iassonga: " Don't look at me . Talk to Tobor." Renfroe curses. Iassonga: " You're out of here."
  8. If it makes folks feel better to say that this season was wonderful and the team exceeded all expectations , so be it . Personally , I don't care for the notion that this was a band of gutty , gritty underdogs who shocked the world. It actually was a team of very talented and very highly paid players who performed much better than last year , but came up short. The areas where improvement is needed are readily apparent. Don't ever be happy with finishing tied for second .
  9. How about using just the best umps behind home plate instead of rotating the crew? Pay them more if need be. You wouldn't use a baggage handler to rotate with the air traffic controller. Why use a third base ump to call balls and strikes.
  10. As a Sox fan, I understand that sentiment . As a baseball fan , I find it abhorrent.
  11. I feel that if a team beats you fair and square , you can pull for them to win it all. I would not mind if Houston won the World Series. I do hope they play the Dodgers. To be the best , you have to beat the best.
  12. I look for the Sox to be contenders next season. But there are some holes to fill . Other teams are getting better. Boston has to keep improving to stay up there.
  13. If I understand it correctly , the Robo ump would strictly be limited to calling balls and strikes. Nothing else. Even then , I am against it. I do think that improvement in the performance of some umpires should be more of a concern with MLB. There are some who should not be behind home plate , especially in big games. Yet , they are still there and nothing seems to be done about it. If you continually stink at your job , you should be replaced by someone who will do it better. But not by a robot. I could say more , but Alexa is listening , and I don't want to make her angry . I do need my parcel delivered today.
  14. Cora did a fine job this year. He deserves praise and a raise. But he is not the manager of the year.
  15. The Sox are a very good team , but they are still missing a few pieces of the puzzle. The Astros are just a little bit better. A more complete team. In the end , they simply outhit and out pitched the Sox. Outscored them 23-3 over the final three games. They deserve to go to the Fall Classic.
  16. Yankee fans can always pass the time this winter watching " Yankee Classics " on the YES network. Where the Yanks are still undefeated.
  17. I will let the winnings ride on Saturday's game.
  18. According to Paul "Needlenose " Minagge , A baseball game between two good teams can basically go either way. Even if one team is superior, never give big odds. Don't try to overanalyze . It's not quite a crapshoot , but it's pretty close to it. " Needlenose" knows a thing or two about gambling. That said, I've got a double saw on the Sox tonight.
  19. For whatever reason , a lot of folks just take a liking to some players and a dislike to others. And that influences their opinions. Objectivity can be hard to come by. It's just human nature , but it is something to try and overcome.
  20. No secret what the Yankees will do . They will spend big on one of the top shortstop free agents. And maybe look for a speedy and athletic outfielder to replace the aging Gardner and the overrated Hicks.
  21. The old MAD magazine had a feature called , " Spy vs Spy" . That's baseball now.
  22. Yes . They need to score runs. The outcome of every game in every sport is determined by out scoring the opponent. That is always the object.
  23. Of course they will try to end it in six. Just like they have tried to win every game.
  24. This is not brain surgery. It is baseball. A game. Things don't have to be perfect. It's just a game. It is supposed to be fun. Part of the fun is screaming at the ump. " Get your eyes checked , Blue." Etc. Try to have fun watching it. Relax. It's not as if the Sox are on an 86 year drought. And it is not a matter of life and death. Unless you cause yourself to get a heart attack or bleeding ulcers or a nervous breakdown . And if you are going to do that , robot umps will not help.
  25. Folks on here like to overreact and overthink . This is baseball. The Red Sox have to win the next two games. That is not an impossibility. The Astros just did it. It's not easy , but the Sox can do it too. This is no time to despair.
