  1. They used their closer. They would not have used anyone else regardless.
  2. Cora brings in Brasier to face Brantley. (Brasier is not exactly Mariano) Brantley hits a grand slam. Second guessers: " Why didn't that fool bring in a lefty?" That's the beauty of second guessing.
  3. Ideally, your bullpen would have a top notch closer and three reliable set up men. (Even then , you are going to blow one sometimes.) Presently, the Sox bullpen does not have that luxury. Cora does a very good job of utilizing what he has . But it's a little like Russian Roulette . Sometimes it works, but occasionally it doesn't . Second guessing is easy when it doesn't work . Anyone can do better. That's what we all like to think. But all in all, Cora has done very well with it.
  4. At some point in the 1975 World Series , a reporter asked Sox' lefty , Bill Lee ; " What do you think of the Series so far? " Lee gave a one word answer , " Tied." Same as now. It goes without saying that it's a big game tonight.
  5. Exactly. Perez' entire job was to get Brantley out. He didn't do it. But Cora was not giving up on the game when he brought him in. He obviously thought he was the best option against Brantley. The Sox have a rather mediocre pen. Cora has done a fine job of mixing and matching them up to get the job done. Sometimes it doesn't work. Last night was one of them. But it was not Cora's fault.
  6. The Astros cannot stop the Sox onslaught. They have the look of a beaten team.
  7. After a thorough review of this season's disappointing performance , the Yankees determined that it was all the fault of the batting coach and the third base coach.
  8. Everything could be falling into place for another parade. Atlanta upsetting the Dodgers would certainly make things easier. When you're hot , you're hot.
  9. Dave Roberts will always have a place in the hearts of Sox fans , but I think he leaves something to be desired as an in -game manager.
  10. The Astros have a potent lineup , but their starting pitching is simply not good enough to stop the Sox onslaught. The Sox hitters are confident and locked in.
  11. The Red Sox lineup is relentless. Constant pressure on the pitcher. Very few easy innings . I don't think the Astros have the answer.
  12. It was a good game. Could have gone either way. Both teams had trouble getting the big hit with runners on. In the end , the insurance run the Astros scored in the eighth proved to be the difference.
  13. What I am trying to say is ; is a guy like Whitlock more valuable to the team as a starter , who goes maybe six innings every five days , or in the bullpen , where he could be used in big spots several days a week?
  14. MLB would probably make a new rule to prevent that . The " One Kike " rule. Maybe check DNA after every game.
  15. Ordinarily , I would like to see both Houck and Whitlock in the rotation . But the way baseball is played these days , the bullpen is absolutely vital . So , it is a tough call on how best to utilize them.
  16. We now are hearing the same crap all over again. " Why , even if we lose , we had a great year. Exceeded expectations. " We heard it before the regular season ended , before the play in game and before the ALDS. When the Sox win this and go to the Fall Classic , we will hear it again.
  17. That was clearly a check swing by any definition that I have ever heard. Not suggesting there was anything devious going on. Just a terrible call by the first base ump. They make quite a few mistakes in almost every game , but this was a very bad time for it.
  18. There is no way to know that. He deserved a chance . The previous hitter was also rung up on a somewhat questionable call after hitting a long foul ball. The game ended in a controversial play. That should not happen.
  19. Yup. That is pretty much what I was suggesting.
  20. In four years with the Sox , Price went 46-24. He was paid a boatload of money. In five years with the Sox , Sale has gone 40-24. He was , and is, being paid a boatload of money . He also cost Moncada and Kopech. Now , I know that wins and losses can be deceiving . And by no means am I saying that Price is as good a pitcher as Sale. But how is one contract that much better than the other ?
  21. The only explanation , other than " that's baseball" , is " Sometimes you eat the bear , sometimes the bear eats you."
  22. The NFL is loaded with guys who have committed crimes. Sometimes violent crimes. They are still in the league. And being cheered. I think the Sox will beat the Astros . But if they don't , you can be sure there will be accusations of cheating. That's just how it is.
  23. I'm sure the Sox' scouts are noting that the Astros are a good fastball hitting team.
  24. How about a tip of the cap to Dombrowski for the Eovaldi for Beeks trade . Would things have been different if the Rays still had Eovaldi , and the Sox still had Beeks? That is not a question.
  25. I think the Stros would be a little tougher to beat than the Pale Hose , but I like the Carmines chances against either one of these teams. Next up : The official Fall Classic thread.
