  1. It's kind of like asking , " Which of your children do you like best " ? The 2018 team did win 108 games in the regular season , then went 11 - 3 in the post season against the Yankees , Astros and Dodgers , three very strong teams in their own right. That said , the 2004 team will always have a special place in Sox history. That can never be topped.
  2. The 2018 team was probably the most dominant , the closet to being the total package. But the 2004 team will always be the most special because of what they accomplished. I will say this: Thank God that Dave Roberts wasn't picked off or they would have been swept and Red Sox history would have been put on hold.
  3. Expectations for the 2021 team were probably unreasonably low due to too much weight being given to the abbreviated and rather bizarre 2020 season. There was still a lot of talent on the team. The smart money should have seen a bounce back coming. Likewise , it is highly likely that JBJ will bounce back this season. For whatever reason , it just didn't work out in Milwaukee.
  4. I would like to " sincerely apologize" to the families and friends of all the ham and eggers , jabronis and pencil neck geeks that I may have offended in the past. I meant no harm. I will try to do better. Thank you.
  5. I can picture Allen Craig , sitting on a sunny beach and saying " I was named as the worst Red Sox player ever by TalkSox. Oh, the shame of it all. Guess I'll have another Tequila ".
  6. I often wonder if the MLB players who go to Japan are more likely to sign with Yomiuri or Chunichi .
  7. Well , it could be worse.
  8. Very true. I do think pro athletes have the money , the fame , the time , the opportunity and the temptations to indulge in the " forbidden fruits" . Probably more so than the average working stiff. And nobody is putting that working stiff on a pedestal. We shouldn't put the athletes on a pedestal either. Not even our favorites.
  9. We have no idea how widespread the steroid use was at that time. And not just in baseball either. Drug use was also rampant , and sadly still is throughout society. As far as the Hall of Fame is concerned, I think the players should be evaluated strictly on their accomplishments. And it is usually a mistake to put any athlete or public figure on a pedestal . Our heroes very often have feet of clay.
  10. In the Mr. Olympia competition , if you tested negative you were disqualified .
  11. I have no idea. I meant that the average fan may have difficulty relating to this current dispute between the players and owners. You sir , are free to relate, or not relate, to anything you choose.
  12. It is kind of crazy when we are talking about a half million bucks and upwards being the " minimum wage". Not to mention the billionaires being unable to afford to field a contender. I think it is hard for Joe Lunchbox to relate to any of this.
  13. I try to form my own opinions on everything , based on my feelings and experiences. I don't follow any particular handbook or party line. I don't expect anyone to agree with all ( or even most) of them. And I am not easily offended nor do I take myself all that seriously.
  14. My feeling is that the use of steroids was rampant in sports at the time. We have no idea how many athletes used . It should be totally disregarded as a factor in selection to the Hall.
  15. Folks have to get crazy and rant about everything that happens. It's the law.
  16. Congrats to David " Big Papi" Ortiz. A Red Sox hero and icon forever. And a Hall of Famer.
  17. Everybody wants the bigger slice of the pie. There are no good guys and bad guys here. Just some rich and richer folks fighting over how to glom and divvy up even more money from their loyal customers, (fans ) , ( marks) , ( suckers). But we do need our entertainment. So, it will be resolved before long.
  18. Analytics / metrics have a value when building a roster and making the best use of that roster . Sports franchises recognize this and try to use it to their advantage. There are some fans who love to comb through all the numbers as well. However , I think the average fan is not much interested in analytics , and even turned off when teams , reporters and announcers constantly mention them. They prefer to just watch the games , enjoy them and form their own opinions. These fans make up the bulk of MLB's paying customers. MLB is part of the entertainment industry . And they need to remember that.
  19. You just have to score more runs than your opponent. Doesn't much matter if it's because of hitting or pitching or fielding. Offense or defense or base running .
  20. Other than a few of the top guys , pitchers can be somewhat unpredictable from year to year . Probably due to various arm ailments , among other things. I think this applies to starters as much as it does relievers. When you sign any free agent , there are no money back guarantees. Sometimes you just have to take a shot. No guts , no glory.
  21. Houck and Whitlock would certainly help. Keeping them in the bullpen might depend on the performance of the new acquisitions to the starting rotation.
  22. If the bullpen is always the first place to look when you want to save money , then it probably is not high on your list of priorities. And it should be. As I said before, a close game will almost certainly come down to a battle of the bullpens.
  23. The NFL teams have 47 players active on game day.
  24. Understating the importance of the bullpen is a major mistake. Almost all close games are decided by the bullpens. Trying to piece one together " on the fly" is not a good idea. It is very hard to win without a really good pen. It is possible , but difficult to do. And it all starts with having a first rate , reliable closer . Then you work from there. Our saves leader in 2019 had 16 saves. In 2020 it was 9 saves. Last year it was 24. The Sox , despite a really good lineup , did not come close to winning the division in any of those last three years.
  25. Cricket is gaining a lot of popularity around the world. A fine sporting event. Well , except for the occasional sticky wicket. That can sometimes be a major turnoff.
