  1. I like to think of it as real umpires assisted by technology rather than the demeaning phrase of robo-umps. It would improve the game to know that balls and strikes would be called accurately. Too many times hitters believe they have to swing at pitches 2 inches off the plate because that is how the ump defines the zone for that game inly
  2. Trades will be difficult this season. If any can be made, it should be those players who are unlikely to help us in 2021 and especially 2022 and are expensive to keep. Pitching needs to be revamped. Lets hope Bloom can make the kind of progress with our pitching that he made with the Rays. It may take a couple of years. Sale will be iffy when he gets back but I am hoping E-Rod can return to form. Real pitching prospects are hard to come by through the trade route so we need to look in the draft. i too am an advocate of bringing up any prospects who have a chance of making the team next year so they can be assessed.
  3. Barnes wasn't so hot either.
  4. Look, we have Marcus Wilson on the 30 man roster and we have Jarren Duran who we most likely will see next year. Those are the two i was speaking of. Benitenndi is in a severe slump and it's not as if he is making solid contact and is unlucky. He looks lost and is hurting the team in this abbreviated season. The Sox need him to correct his issues with the guidance of the hitting coaches and until he shows progress, how can you recommend he be on the starting lineup?
  5. I don't buy giving excuses to major league players who don't get it done. I don't blame Roenicke for players not doing their part. I do blame him when he makes bad decisions, but there are not enough incidences yet to form an opinion. The management probably will look for a replacement this off season. Oh, you can get rid of players who don't perform. Just have to be careful not to throw the baby out with the bathwater.
  6. Beni needs help as he is lost at the plate. For those who don't want to give up on him, what is their suggestion? Leave him in when he is having trouble making contact? Clearly he has ability but needs a way to straighten himself out without hurting the team. We have two outfield prospects that would probably do as well or better at the plate.
  7. Time to bring up our best prospects and let them sink or swim.
  8. I agree that the pitching is very weak and winning will be tough, but what about our vaunted offense? At least for now, only a few players look like ML hitters.
  9. He looks completely lost at the plate. Up in the 9th with runners on the corners he took a ball down the middle, a second call strike which was on the inside and finally struck out on a well located fastball. Is it time to bring up some youngsters?
  10. Roenicke was quoted today when he indicated Beni has a leg kick issue and that is throwing off his timing. He tends to be trying to catch up (speed up his bat) and so far that isn't working. The article indicates no one looks more lost at the plate on the Red Sox roster than Beni. Roenicke indicates that he plans to use Pillar against lefty pitching plus different pairings of the 3 lefty outfielders on the roster. Verdugo's success against lefties is a consideration. He implies that the choice will be based on who is hot and at this time Beni is not, with 2 hits in 21 ABs and one of those a bunt. Maybe it is like AAA, first you have to admit you have a problem before you can proceed to correct it.
  11. The Sox are facing one of the best starters in the majors. Don't expect much offense.
  12. The Sox are already headed for the cellar. Our better players will soon be disillusioned, if not already. Start planning for 2021 and beyond. This thread is supposed to depict a realistic view of 2020, even if the realism is tough to take. Some steps that should be taken: 1. Look to trade players who still have some value but are unlikely to fit our needs in 2021 and probably more importantly 2022. 2. Bring up our best prospects, give them big league experience while evaluating their ML potential' 3. Minor L pitching especially needs to be looked at. 4. Give Chavis and Beni enough PT to decide if they will fill a at least two roster spot in future years. If we want to build a champion, we need championship quality players 5. Evaluate Roenicke. He is in a tough spot, but is he the guy who can manage a future team to a championship. 6. Adjust our thinking as fans and realize we will need at least 2 years to build a really competitive team.
  13. I thought David Peterson was on the list of the most impressive prospects in spring training for the Mets., A lefty with decent velocity and a sinking fastball. He was drafted #20 in the first round out of Oregon and has been in the minors since 2017.
  14. One pitcher will not be enough. Better to take the Dombrowski hangover this year and start building for 2021 and beyond. I'll judge Bloom by how he structures the team going forward and expect no miracles this year.
  15. How do 7 players and two staff test positive for COVID? These are young guys who have a responsibility to be careful but probably aren't. Is it the nature of guys this age to be careful? We are seeing the answer. The team management can do only so much to create a safe environment, after that it is on the players and it appears too many of them don't take this seriously and that could well end the season. I had hopes the 60 games would be played but the Marlins experience may lead to an early shutdown.
  16. The bunt for a base hit was a good idea and the stolen base was as well. He followed that up with 4 very weak AB's. Right now he is 1 for 15 and the worst hitter on the Sox. He will continue to face good pitching so needs some change to get him started. I have no idea what would work. Tough love? A drop to the bottom of the order? One bright spot was Godley who went 4 innings with 7 SO's. Not much velocity but a deceptive curve ball.
  17. The decision after 5 series should be what prospects to bring up and which established players to trade.
  18. Beni is not a power hitter He slimmed back down which will help his defense and base running, but he will wind up as a 15 HR guy and a decent but not great outfielder with an average arm. To be of value he has to have a high OBP. He looked lost against the O's going 0 for 10 with 4 strikeouts and 2 walks. This is his 3rd season and he either needs to produce or he won't last in the majors. For now, I would drop him in the order as there are better choices for leadoff. Be interesting to see what the Sox do.
  19. It's going to be a tough go. If some of the hitters are cold against Oriole pitching, what will happen against the top flight arms we are about to see? If we need 6 or 7 runs on average to win games, that is tough for any offense to generate, let alone one with key players cold.
  20. Not a bad idea to bat JD second. Now we need our leadoff hitter to produce in front of him. Four strikeouts and no hits against Orioles pitching is not the kind of start we need. Maybe we will rethink the order if Beni doesn't produce. The problem is the season is so short that its hard to leave a cold guy in for the first 10 or 20 games.I would think that applies to any position. Go with the hot hands!
  21. Beni is certainly off slow. Maybe leadoff doesn't suit him.
  22. Beni is striking out too much. Got to lead off better.
  23. My You-Tube didn't carry it. Makes one wonder why I pay $65 a month. From the Box score it looks like ist base against lefties is a work in progress.
  24. It hard to get good young pitching as the teams who would want another bat may also want to keep their pitching. Going back to what Moon was saying in 2019, we may want to part ways with anyone not expected to help us in 2021 and 2022. If Bloom can work trades that help us in the future or with the farm, then we should do it and concentrate on follow-on years.
  25. The only other candidate for 2nd in the order is Bogey. Not such a bad choice either.
