  1. This is a 162 game season and pitchers in particular feel a lot of wear and tear going through it, not to mention outright injuries. Pitchers throw harder on average than in the past and while a lot of guys are big, nevertheless, they still feel worn down. In the case of the Sox, we have had a lot of outings where the starter goes 5 innings and sometimes less, meaning the bullpen gets worked very hard. Cora has tried to mitigate the wear and tear but it is still there for the Sox and every other team. We are hoping that guys like Sale and E-Rod and to some extent Price will have been rested enough to bring them into the Playoffs in decent form. Remember in Spring Training next year, this kind of baseball wear factor will very much come into play again next year.
  2. This is not directly related to Leon, but questions the whole idea of catcher ERA. If a pitcher, who turns out to be a ace has a favorite catcher, does that swing the catchers era in a favorable direction? Of course the ace might well like the catcher because he calls a terrific game. My point is that there are quite a few variables in comparing catcher ERA which might not be a good measure of value.
  3. Pay them a lot, use them a lot, wear them down and then they lose their value. Long term contracts for pitchers in general don't make sense and for relievers less sense.
  4. Why look for the negative when Beni getting a HR has got to be a positive and may lead to more later on?
  5. Carbon Copy of last night. Down at the start.
  6. What a great series of ABs. Don't underrate Kinsler's contribution all night. Hard guy to get out and a threat on the bases. Swihart put together a professional AB to draw a walk followed by a key clutch hit by JBJ. Betts is to be forgiven after doing so much tonight and then Beni was overdue and came through on a 99 mph fb. Another asked when JDM woulld hit another HR. Didn't have to wait long as he delivered a knockout blow. Our pen has to hold such a nice lead. Great pen work tonight so far, and the Yannkees blew their game at home to the Tigers.
  7. New game. Timely hitting and Betts coing through in a big way. Beni is ice cold. Now the pen has to hold. Who will it be?
  8. He's a 230 hitter so he only gets a hit every 4th time. Against good pitching like tonight he would be good to even hit his average. A hit would have been nice, but it was optimistic to expect one. At least the kids pitch count is up so one more inning at the most. We need to hold them now to stand a decent change.
  9. To play 500 ball down the stretch, we had better win this upcoming series as we will be in deeper water later on. Lets hope Porcello will be on tonight and give us a 7 good innings.
  10. He is no longer one of a string of hitters that were easy outs at the bottom of the order. He is hittting the ball hard and getting quite a few extra base hits. His defense and durability have been excellent and now with the hitting he is enhancing his market value. Come to think of it, Nunez and Kinsler are also hitting much better so other than catcher, the bottom of our order is now a real threat to opposing pitchers.
  11. Beni also needs to bounce back. Lots of ground balls.
  12. Me too. If he gets back into form he could be our 3rd starter, especially if Porcello has another weaker start.
  13. Who is available to start against the whitesox tomorrow?
  14. I'll bet getting a second hit in the same inning as one pinch hit is a very rare occurence in BB.
  15. X rays are negative.
  16. I feel sorry for the kid. He is just in a slump and we need him to adjust and come out of it. Even our BP can't blow this one.
  17. He made the change and had to.
  18. It was a great at bat. He drew more than a third of all pitches to the lineup of the first 7 batters and he finished it off with a HR to tie the game. Nunez is starting to get back into the form that endeared him with Red Sox Nation last year.
  19. 2 hits last night and he get the rally going.
  20. He stopped pulling the ball and he doesn't have a lot of power so CF flys won't get it done. Lots of his fouls go to the left side. His timing may be off or he may be trying to hit the other way. His average sn't too bad but very little power.
  21. Kinsler filled a need and is doing well at the position. The Sox may have to go to plan B on the Pitching front. Sept call ups are right around the corner and the Sox can call up some arms to give the BP some rest. We need the starters to go 6 or 7 also to reduce the BP useage.
  22. When hitters are in a serious slump, even the average pitches can look good. We have had both Betts and Beni off for a while so the Rays weaker pitches looked good. Still Bogaerts and JDM were getting their hits, which indicates to me it was partially the slumping players that made the pitches look good. Last night Betts looked better with 3 walks and a hit. Beni was,1 for 5 so he may still need to find his way out of a slump. One HR since the AS break indicates he is not hitting with as much authority as he had been.
  23. You are just too polite to say much about the BP. Another implosion. Acquisitions won't help if our setup man and our closer are unreliable. Hembree has been consistently unreliable of late. Barnes and Kimbrel have to shape up and soon. Both have had good years until the recent issues. Thank god for the offense that got us 8 tonight.
  24. A terrible night for our setup man and now closer.
  25. Two walks before the single. What is he thinking or is he?
