  1. Nunez is superior to Devers both offensively and defensively and should get the nod at 3B. Whether Devers makes the PO roster in my view depends on whether the Sox want to have another left hand bad available, instead of keeping Vaz on the team. I hope the ship has sailed on Pedroia for this year. In the pitching arena the question remains as to how much we need to keep multiple left handed relief pitchers in the lineup. I would take Workman over johnson in a heartbeat. Wright also deserves consideration. His ability to do long relief might push him up over a guy like Hembree, who has been erratic.
  2. Watching the end of the Oakland/ Yankee game. Oakland leads 6 to 3 going into the bottom of the 8th. Must be something about relief pitchers. Familia got the first 2 in the top of the 8th and then walked the next two (stupid thing to do with a 3 run lead) Fortunately he outbattled Sanchez for the final out although he threw 2 balls to start Sanchez off. Familia has great stuff, but you still need a guy to find the plate.
  3. Maybe there is something to the Sox playing up to the competition. After a lifeless day yestderday, the Sox looked like a copletely different team. Loots of big hits and strong pitching with excellent defense. The Braves are a very legitimate team and we put them away in their ome stadium.
  4. I have a significant interest in horse racing, baseball and other sports. In the case of horse racing, stats reign and you can see past performances back 10 races, workout performances and many other stats. The final odds usually reflect these stats as players have gotten sophisticated enough to read and interpret these. Interestingly, this season at Saratoga the betting odds favorites have lost a disproportionate amount of races. Do past performances predict current form well enough to be reliable? The answer appears to be no and the contrarian thinks twice before setting too much store in stats reflecting past glories. It is just a precautionary story to suggest an over reliance on stats can lead to incorrect conclusions. Many here subscribe to a balanced approach to team construction including a pinch of eye test and a dollop of stats. The argument seems to continued with new terms to me anyway, such as right tailed outcomes.
  5. I would have preferred the Sox showing some offense, even if they lost due to our weak pitching. Total indifference is not great to see.
  6. Not competitive today. We put up our weaker pitchers and had to hope the offense would show up against Shields. Pretty big holle to climb out of.
  7. We have been getting poor starting pitching with the exception of E-Rod. Puts a lot of pressure on the offense. The good news is the Yankees are struggling today as well.
  8. We don't maintain long running strings like this on all our players and probably it would be best to let this one expire.
  9. When Devers was called up, his bat was impressive but his fielding was not really ready. League pitchers tend to find hitting flaws quickly as they have done with Devers. His fielding hasn't improved all that much in his time with the Sox and his physical condition (weight) is suspect. They say he worked hard to improve, but the results just weren't reflecting his efforts, so down he went and the management is going to be slow to reinstate him. I hope that additional time in the minors will result in his developing into a contributing player next season but for now, we are better off with Nunez. As Moon has said, Devers may find himself migraating to 1st base in future.
  10. Even when he gets into trouble, he has enough stuff and cunning to get out with little or no damage.
  11. This is a 162 game season and pitchers in particular feel a lot of wear and tear going through it, not to mention outright injuries. Pitchers throw harder on average than in the past and while a lot of guys are big, nevertheless, they still feel worn down. In the case of the Sox, we have had a lot of outings where the starter goes 5 innings and sometimes less, meaning the bullpen gets worked very hard. Cora has tried to mitigate the wear and tear but it is still there for the Sox and every other team. We are hoping that guys like Sale and E-Rod and to some extent Price will have been rested enough to bring them into the Playoffs in decent form. Remember in Spring Training next year, this kind of baseball wear factor will very much come into play again next year.
  12. This is not directly related to Leon, but questions the whole idea of catcher ERA. If a pitcher, who turns out to be a ace has a favorite catcher, does that swing the catchers era in a favorable direction? Of course the ace might well like the catcher because he calls a terrific game. My point is that there are quite a few variables in comparing catcher ERA which might not be a good measure of value.
  13. Pay them a lot, use them a lot, wear them down and then they lose their value. Long term contracts for pitchers in general don't make sense and for relievers less sense.
  14. Why look for the negative when Beni getting a HR has got to be a positive and may lead to more later on?
  15. Carbon Copy of last night. Down at the start.
  16. What a great series of ABs. Don't underrate Kinsler's contribution all night. Hard guy to get out and a threat on the bases. Swihart put together a professional AB to draw a walk followed by a key clutch hit by JBJ. Betts is to be forgiven after doing so much tonight and then Beni was overdue and came through on a 99 mph fb. Another asked when JDM woulld hit another HR. Didn't have to wait long as he delivered a knockout blow. Our pen has to hold such a nice lead. Great pen work tonight so far, and the Yannkees blew their game at home to the Tigers.
  17. New game. Timely hitting and Betts coing through in a big way. Beni is ice cold. Now the pen has to hold. Who will it be?
  18. He's a 230 hitter so he only gets a hit every 4th time. Against good pitching like tonight he would be good to even hit his average. A hit would have been nice, but it was optimistic to expect one. At least the kids pitch count is up so one more inning at the most. We need to hold them now to stand a decent change.
  19. To play 500 ball down the stretch, we had better win this upcoming series as we will be in deeper water later on. Lets hope Porcello will be on tonight and give us a 7 good innings.
  20. He is no longer one of a string of hitters that were easy outs at the bottom of the order. He is hittting the ball hard and getting quite a few extra base hits. His defense and durability have been excellent and now with the hitting he is enhancing his market value. Come to think of it, Nunez and Kinsler are also hitting much better so other than catcher, the bottom of our order is now a real threat to opposing pitchers.
  21. Beni also needs to bounce back. Lots of ground balls.
  22. Me too. If he gets back into form he could be our 3rd starter, especially if Porcello has another weaker start.
  23. Who is available to start against the whitesox tomorrow?
  24. I'll bet getting a second hit in the same inning as one pinch hit is a very rare occurence in BB.
  25. X rays are negative.
