  1. So basically we will pay $38M to Giolito for at best one year of service. Nice signing by the Sox. Giolito had all the upside on that deal. Pitch good, opt out. Get hurt. $19M to rehab. This is why John Henry is pissed off all the time. That's on the heels of of Chris Sale's extension fiasco. Take away all the waste and we have enough money to sign even Betts.
  2. I'm thinking the Sox would lose about $80M at the gate if attendance drops by 10, 000 fans. My guess is that won't happen. Too many fans will always love the 'ballpark experience". Not sure about the local tv revenues. Anyone here have any idea how my mlb subsription of about $160 is split? What if I pick the $130 option just to watch the Sox? Does more money flow to the Sox?
  3. Switching up a bit. Brez sees tightening of budget going forward despite what is being said publicly. Immediate reaction would be to improve what we have through analytics. Think how much money we'd save if our rotation was Bello, Houck, Whitlock, Kutter and Winck for 2025? Pivetta is a goner. Giolito with a reasonable season will opt out. That starting five in 2025 will cost the Sox less than $10M. That maybe what Henry is thinking. While at it, I'd look to get rid of Story and Yoshida even having to eat half of their contracts. Basically you'd have Devers $29M and not much else. Hell you can get the payroll down to $75M.
  4. Starts 2 Whitlock 1 Bello 1 Giolito 1 Crawford 1 Winckowski 1 Houck What's up with Pivetta? Is he hurt?
  5. Whitlock's first game in 2023 was 4/11 followed by 4/16 and 4/22. Then it was 5/27. After pitching on 7/2, he was shut down until 8/13. I just want him to stay healthy. At this point, I don't really give damn about his effectiveness. But it's good to see him having some success. Stay healthy young man. I'm also rooting for Criswell because he throws hard.
  6. I'm simply talking about contract structure for Montgomery. Idea is that we can use him for at least two years as we build up our starting rotation internally. Why not front loaded it and have an opt out after two years? Now if Henry is concerned about actual cash outflow for 2024/25, ($60M combined) then obviously it does not work. I guess I'm always thinking in terms of luxury tax payroll. So a 4 year deal at $100M, with payouts $30M, $30M, opt out then $20M the last two years comes to $25M luxury tax payroll, keeping us below the penalty. It's always a gamble with injuries and what not. Hopefully he can have two outstanding years then opt out. You could go 5 years and $120M, reducing the luxury tax payroll from $25M to $22M+. Hope the guy has two good years and then opt out.
  7. Monty, Gio, Nick, Bello and Kutter looks pretty solid while jettisoning Houck, Whitlock and Winckowski to the pen.
  8. How Red Sox went from ‘hard no’ to starting Roman Anthony in MLB spring game MassLive headline......I'm ready to move on but I doubt that Cora misunderstood the question.
  9. thanks...that's what meant
  10. Simple act of signing Montgomery would repair the feelings of Sox fans about John Henry. It's not like he's 35, he's only 31. Come on John. No one will remember how wealthy you are when you die. You will go down in history as that guy who rather hang on to his money than to win championships.
  11. According to MassLive Cora changed his mind after seeing several Orioles prospects playing last Saturday. I am just repeating the article. Don't shoot the messanger.
  12. Anthony’s appearance was particularly unexpected, since only last week, manager Alex Cora, when asked if Anthony might get into a major league game this spring, responded: “That’s a hard no.” Cora changed his mind, however, after the Red Sox played the prospect-rich Baltimore Orioles Saturday and featured some of their top minor leaguers in the contest, including the game’s No. 1 prospect, Jackson Holliday. (Ironically, Holliday and Anthony trained together this past winter in Oklahoma). Come on Cora. Get with the program. Why are we such a chicken s*** on stuff like this? It's a freakin scrimmage games. Afraid one set back will damage these players?
  13. Not to be an ass, but how many games separate the Sox from the Jays based on these numbers?
  14. How do we stack up vs other AL East teams? (mlb.com had projected starting rotation. Whitlock was there instead of Houck)
  15. I agree. Why are we setting lower budget in 2023?
  16. Earlier this week, team president Sam Kennedy said the club had talked with “a number” of players about possible deals. So Sox have had discussions with Casas and Bello. Sam Kenney added it's full throttle when it comes to extending young players (2). jk
  17. My guess is it's not all about velocity with Schreiber. His unique angle has more to do with his success? (I had to go to different a site, 94.4 in 2022 and 93.2 in 2023, a slight decrease; it was 92.7 in 2021, 89.8 in 2020)
  18. The Fenway Group or whatever is called I don't believe have hundreds of shareholders. I get it that the bottom line is all-important number for say Apple, but for Henry's company?
  19. We are definitely shopping for clothes at Wal-Mart. Perhaps Pedey should speak to Mrs. Henry about that. She'd understand.
  20. It's hard for me to believe additional $25M to sign Montgomery is going to sink the Sox. Our payroll is less than $100M for 2025. Ugh Maybe the Sale's extension was the final straw.....NO LONG TERM DEALS for pitchers over 30?
  21. I had to laugh....Pedey didn't think Sox management did not know the current free agent list? Thanks Mr. Obvious
  22. Slaten, who’s listed at 6-foot-4, 222 pounds, posted a 2.87 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, .206 batting average against, 86 strikeouts and 20 walks in 59 ⅔ innings (40 appearances, one start) last season at Double A and Triple A combined. He threw 62 four-seamers in his five Triple-A outings (8.1 innings), topping out at 98.3 mph and never throwing one below 94.1 mph. His average four-seam velo was 96.1 mph or faster in four of his five outings. He also mixes in a cutter, curveball and slider. Cora has taken notice of this Rule 5 guy.
  23. “I do believe that decision-making at 97, 98 (mph) is a lot more difficult than at 90, 91,” Cora said. “And last year we had no velo. We had some nasty pitches. Good sliders, cutters and all that. But velocity wasn’t a part of our repertoire and this year it’s going to be a little bit different.” Sox ranked 25th out of 30 teams with average velocity of 93.8 mph. John Schreiber averaged 93.1 on his fastball, ranking him 267th. Maybe that's why he got traded.
  24. Knowing we likely will have 4 players at $75 M under contract for 2025, (assuming Giolito bolts) it's baffling we are not spending any money. My conclusion is they simply don't want to.
  25. You are probably right. I am just putting myself inside Brez's head as to why we made that trade. 1 opening a spot for two guys that either make the team or gets thrown off Sox island 2 couple with disparity in player controlled years. My guess is Sox likes possible ceiling of the two players that have to make the team or get released. The kid received is cherry on top.
