  1. Pedro never struggled at any level at any age.
  2. 4th place in the league and no gm would have predicted Price's first half season being this bad or the injuries to Kimbrel and Smith. Their offense is the best in baseball and it's not even close. The pitching is closer to the middle than the bottom and it's largely due to the horrendous numbers put up by 4-5. This trade could have a drastic effect if Pomeranz is just decent.
  3. Pomeranz ERA is actually higher at home than on the road.
  4. I like the trade. I realize it could end up being a bagwell trade, but it could end up looking like a great trade for us or anywhere in between. If Pomeranz gives us 2 and a half good years, considering the strong nucleus of hitters we have for those years, the only way I would consider it a bad trade is if Espinoza turns out to be a truly elite pitcher. It's hard to find a good comparison for Espinoza, but I found 4 who started in the minors at age 17 or 18 and became elite pitchers, Felix Hernandez, Clayton Kershaw, Dwight Gooden and Pedro Martinez. None of these guys struggled like Espinoza has when they were 18/19 and playing A-AA ball. Granted these are some of the best pitchers over the last 30 years, but if anyone can find a pitcher who struggled at 18 in the minors and turned out to be great I'd love to see it. On the other hand there's a chance Pomeranz falls apart or can't handle the AL east, but I think this trade could help our WS chances for more than just this year.
  5. Is that still his job though? Shouldn't he be able to rely on his pitching coach to look over video and watch mechanics to figure out what's wrong with these guys? Case in point is the Pedroia/Price thing.
  6. Well it was moved after less than 2 hours so getting more responses in the following 24 hours doesn't seem like that many to me.
  7. I agree with you that the coaching staff needs some of the blame. If you look at the stats the pitching staff as a whole is not that bad. 9th in the league in ERA, 4th in QS. The ERA is lowered considerably because the last two starters have been historically bad. If a couple of the new or old starters could give us a 5 ERA things wouldn't look that bad from a starter standpoint. The bullpen has been hit hard by injuries, maybe a converted Kelly will help.
  8. I agree with you on that. I started the all star game thread as a talksox thread and generated a fair amount of responses. Then it was moved to the general baseball forum and all the responses stopped for the most part.
  9. Latest results are out. http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-big-league-stew/red-sox-add-another-starter-in-latest-all-star-voting-update-190753064.html Ortiz is more than 3x the number 2 at DH, Bogaerts is close to 2x the number 2 at SS. Bradley Jr and Betts are second and third in the outfield, but it's close.
  10. I think this might be part of it http://kansascity.royals.mlb.com/kc/fan_forum/allstar_offers.jsp They have a promotion where if you submit a ballot, and check the Royals as your favorite club you get entered into sweepstakes to win tickets and other stuff. They dominated the voting last year too.
  11. I don't mind the interruptions for the actual review. What I don't like is the interruptions while the manager waits for word on whether he should ask for a review or not. Personally I think they should double the amount of challenges they get but not allow them to wait for a phone call to decide if they want to review.
  12. A lot of good 2B out there this year. Cano and Kinsler are having good seasons as well. It would be nice if defense mattered. Other than Ozzie Smith I don't remember any player making it due to defense. I think Wright makes it for sure, does he have any chance of starting? 35 is a lot of times, and the Royals fans definitely use it to their advantage. I think it's based on the number of games during the voting period since All star voting used to be done at the ballpark. What part of Maine are you in Nava? I grew up in Hampden (next to Bangor), went to undergrad in Orono.
  13. I think I'm in the minority here, but I'd be willing to give up Moncada or Benitendi for a young Top of the rotation starter. I'd prefer Moncada, both because I think you can get more for him and I like the idea of a Benitendi, Bradley, Betts outfield in the years to come.
  14. If you look at age, not season number, Xander is 23 this season, which was Nomar's 1997 season. Xander is behind in HRs and triples, but has an edge in most other stats.
  15. Is Porcello really a 'stuck with'. In the AL he ranks 20th in era, 6th in whip, 8th in K/BB, 14th in QS.
  16. Third voting update is out. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/183974768/american-league-all-star-voting-update Betts is making an even bigger push now, 5th place among outfielders and less than 10% away from 3rd place. Bradley moved into second place for the outfield. Bogaerts widened his lead. The only question on Ortiz is will he lead all voting. Right now he's at 2.02 million to Salvador Perez' 2.06 million. This is really the only place where the Royals fans are having an effect. Second place at DH is the Royals Kendrys Morales of the .600 OPS. Even Bogaerts would make a run at most votes if not for the 1 million votes Alcides Escobar (0.556 OPS) has.
  17. It's interesting to me that in 2 of the 7 the starter went 6 or more innings and gave up less than half of the runs.
  18. Hey Moon, Thanks, I was curious about the records when allowing a certain number of runs. You're referring to median, not mean, right. Mean and average are the same thing.
  19. Based on the latest voting, Xander, Papi and JBJ would be starters
  20. One thing that worries me with the offense is that practically none of the starters have had any sort of slump yet this year. The worst they've seen is a slightly bad start from Hanley. Does this mean that 3 or 4 guys are going to hit a dry spell at the same time?
  21. The Redsox team ops is 40 points higher than any player on the Braves with more than 100 PAs. Every player on the sox except for Vasquez, Hanigan, Sandoval and the pitchers have a higher OPS than the braves team.
  22. My thought on this is why didn't Carl Willis see this. I don't usually blame the coaches, but maybe he needs some blame for the horrendous starting pitching. I don't think he can take any credit for Wright. Price's recent uptick is thanks to Pedroia. The rest of the limited starting pitching success is probably more due to AAA than anything. Even Kelley looked good his first start after rehab in the minors.
  23. I wouldn't be surprised to see big road/home splits for the rest of the year from JBJ. He might actually get some sleep when he's on the road.
  24. Early voting results are published. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/181237486/first-al-all-star-ballot-update Papi running away with it of course, but the royals voters are f'ing things up again. Bogaerts(0.347/0.397/0.509) has a less than 1% lead over Escobar (0.267/0.295/0.316) JBJ(0.339/0.401/0.601) would be top three if Cain(0.305/0.355/0.462) wasn't there
