This sentimental poster is a fan of Marcus Semien, a second-generation Golden Bear at Cal (where my daughter attends law school). Robinson Cano was offered as a positive comp for Semien. Using WAR conversion, the Mariners got their money's worth from Cano (although his 2018 suspension helped undermine the M's 89-win season).

Where are the projected WAR for 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026 and 2027? On the other hand, Marcus Semien is exactly the age Robinson Cano was in December 2013 when the latter signed a 10-year, $240 contract with Seattle. FWIW at the time of the signing, Cano had posted 44.4 bWAR in 1,374 games while Semien has posted 28.7 bWAR in 1,020 games. Cano posted 23.5 bWAR in 704 games over five seasons with the Mariners (who were relieved of half of the suspended Cano's 2018 salary).

The Oakland Athletics may be reluctant to keep Lou Trivino with his projected 2022 salary of $2.9 million in his first year of arbitration. The A's will be an interesting team to watch this offseason. -
Reports were that the trade of two months of Kendall Graveman resulted in an immediate intense negative reaction in the Seattle clubhouse. Those emotions reportedly calmed down two days later when the Mariners acquired three years and two months of a more established reliever in 27-year-old Diego Castillo. Small-sample reliever ERA has its limitations, but post-trades Graveman had a higher ERA than Castillo and Joe Smith.

Indeed, a larger sample of 61 games as opposed to the cited 13 games. The 2021 Seattle Mariners' 19-15 record againt AL East teams included a 6-1 record against the 100-win division champion Tampa Bay Rays but a losing record (13-14) against other AL East clubs.

After the trade of Kendall Graveman and Rafael Montero for Abraham Toro and Joe Smith, Graveman posted an ERA of 3.13 in 23 appearances with the Astros while Smith posted an ERA of 2.00 in 23 appearances with the Mariners. Diego Castillo posted an ERA of 2.86 in 24 appearances with Seattle while JT Chargois, who went to Tampa Bay in the Castillo trade, posted an ERA of 1.90 in 25 appearances with the Rays. The Mariners were 55-46 (.545) before the Graveman trade and 35-26 (.574) after the trade.

FWIW this year 27-year-old Ty France would have placed fourth among Red Sox hitters in fWAR (ahead of J.D. Martinez, Alex Verdugo and a full season of Kyle Schwarber). France remains prearbitration next year.
