One comp for Kiki Hernandez might be Seattle's Adam Frazier, a pending free agent who is four months younger than Hernandez. Frazier is a second baseman who this season has made 35 appearances in the outfield and two at shortstop. A 2021 All Star, Frazier has posted 11.6 fWAR (and 99 wRC+) in 809 career games, including 3.6 fWAR (and 113 wRC+) in 155 games last year. Hernandez has posted 12.3 fWAR (and 99 wRC+) in 903 career games, including 4.1 fWAR (and 109 wRC+) in 134 games last year. This season Frazier has posted 1.2 fWAR (and 81 wRC+) in 144 games while Hernandez has posted 0.4 fWAR (and 81 wRC+) in 79 games. What would be an appropriate free agent contract for Frazier, who is earning $8 million in his final arbitration season?

Don't look too far. FWIW last offseason Tommy Pham was a 33-year-old outfielder who had posted 15.9 fWAR in 732 career games when Pham signed a one-year, $7.5 million contract with the Cincinnati Reds. Kiki Hernandez is a 31-year-old utility player who has posted 12.3 fWAR in 903 career games. This season Hernandez has posted 0.4 fWAR in 79 games while Pham has posted 1.0 fWAR in 132 games. FWIW

Chris Taylor was a versatile 31-year-old coming off a 3.1 fWAR season when the 2021 All Star landed the four-year, $60 million contract. At that point Taylor had posted 15.5 fWAR in 743 career games. Kiki Hernandez is a versatile 31-year-old who has posted 0.4 fWAR so far this season while landing the one-year, $10 million contract for 2023. Hernandez has posted 12.3 fWAR in 902 career games.

The simple math is that if the Red Sox win one game against each of the remaining six opponents to go 6-13 the Sox will finish 12 games under .500. If the Sox win five series against remaining foes, and split the four-game series, the Sox would finish no worse than .500.

The Seattle bullpen has benefited from a starting rotation that ranks in the top three in quality starts as Mariner relievers have tossed the fifth-fewest innings in MLB. The bullpen received late-season relief near the trade deadline when Luis Castillo was added to the already solid rotation of Robbie Ray, Logan Gilbert, Marco Gonzales, Chris Flexen and George Kirby. The M's relievers got an added day off last Tuesday when Kirby went five innings and Flexen posted the four-inning save. The Mariners hoped to repeat the Kirby/Flexen tag team on Sunday but Cleveland rain has apparently doused that plan.

The upstart Seattle Mariners control their entire effective bullpen for two more seasons with the exception of lefty Matthew Boyd, who made his Mariner debut last week with one impressive inning. Seattle may seek to re-sign Boyd, who was a 10-year-old Mariner fanatic in 2001 when the Seattle-area native attended a game in the M's last postseason appearance.
