Because the San Diego Padres reportedly are seeking a Rafael Devers-level player for closer Brad Hand*, let's compare Hand and Blake Treinen.
Treinen, who turns 30 years old later this month, remains under team control through 2020 working off a 2018 salary of $2.15 million.
Brad Hand, 28, is owed about $16.5 million through 2020 with a $10 million team option, or $1 million buyout, for 2021.
Treinen has posted 1.5 fWAR in 28 appearances this season while Hand has posted 0.4 fWAR in 34 appearances this year.
ZiPS, Steamer and FanGraphs Depth Charts project rest-of-season WAR of 0.6, 0.5 and 0.8 for Trienen and 0.6, 0.6 and 0.9 for Hand.

One could argue that Treinen has more trade value than Hand. I doubt the uninspiring package of Jalen Beeks, Michael Chavis, Travis Lakins and Heath Hembree (who will be arbitration eligible next offseason) would be enough to land Treinen alone, much less the closer and Jed Lowrie.
