  1. This year Yoan Moncada has 0 Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) in 568 innings at second base after posting 6 DRS in 467.1 innings last year. This year Rafael Devers has -6 DRS in 639.1 innings at third base after posting -1 DRS in 507.2 innings last year. This year Moncada has posted a UZR/150 of 0.7 at second base after posting -1.9 UZR/150 last year. This year Devers has posted a UZR/150 of -2.3 at third base after posting -11.5 UZR/150 last year. https://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=17232&position=2B#fieldingadvanced https://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=17350&position=3B#fieldingadvanced ZiPS, Steamer and FanGraphs Depth Charts project Moncada with rest-of-season WAR of 1.2, 0.8 and 1.0 in 75, 78 and 81 games, respectively. ZiPS, Steamer and FanGraphs Depth Charts project Devers with rest-of-season WAR of 1.1, 1.0 and 1.1 in 78, 73 and 77 games, respectively.
  2. The hitters in the No. 9 holes have remarkably similar lines this season: Blake Swihart 74 PA, .147/.216/.176/.393, OPS+ 8 Andrew Romine 68 PA, .148/.212/.164/.376, , OPS+ 8 What are the chances a June game would feature two starters with those dismal numbers?
  3. http://boston.cbslocal.com/2018/06/22/hanley-ramirez-investigation-red-sox/
  4. I reluctantly concur with your harsh description of the Red Sox trade pieces.
  5. Joakim Soria could be a viable option if the Red Sox can afford the residual of his 2018 salary of $9 million (plus performance bonuses). With a $10 million mutual option for 2019, Soria could be a candidate to replace closer Craig Kimbrel next year. With a potentially expiring contract, Soria should cost less in trade than Brad Hand or Blake Treinen.
  6. Brad Hand has a career ERA+ of 102, including 161 in 205.2 innings over the past three seasons. Hand has a career fWAR of 3.4, including 3.6 (4.6 bWAR) over the past three seasons. Blake Treinen has a career ERA+ of 139, including 155 in 177.2 innings over the past three seasons. Treinen has a career fWAR of 4.3, including 3.3 (4.7 bWAR) over the past three seasons. General managers know that. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/handbr01.shtml https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/treinbl01.shtml https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/handbr01.shtml https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/treinbl01.shtml
  7. On what do you base that conclusion? https://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/athletics/making-case-blake-treinen-baseballs-most-valuable-closer Blake Treinen, Brad Hand top relievers for May WWW.MLB.COM Oakland's Blake Treinen and San Diego's Brad Hand were honored for their May performances as The Hartford American League and National League Relievers of the Month on Saturday.Since arriving in Oakland in a trade with the Nationals last July, Treinen has excelled pitching out of the A's bullpen. This season,
  8. As included in the provided links, Blake Treinen has posted 4.3 fWAR (5.9 bWAR) in 296 career innings while Brad Hand has posted 3.4 fWAR (4.9 bWAR) in 494.1 career innings. https://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=12572&position=P https://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=9111&position=P https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/treinbl01.shtml https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/handbr01.shtml
  9. I immediately provided the projections that are based on the large sample of career numbers.
  10. Because the San Diego Padres reportedly are seeking a Rafael Devers-level player for closer Brad Hand*, let's compare Hand and Blake Treinen. Treinen, who turns 30 years old later this month, remains under team control through 2020 working off a 2018 salary of $2.15 million. Brad Hand, 28, is owed about $16.5 million through 2020 with a $10 million team option, or $1 million buyout, for 2021. Treinen has posted 1.5 fWAR in 28 appearances this season while Hand has posted 0.4 fWAR in 34 appearances this year. ZiPS, Steamer and FanGraphs Depth Charts project rest-of-season WAR of 0.6, 0.5 and 0.8 for Trienen and 0.6, 0.6 and 0.9 for Hand. https://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=12572&position=P https://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=9111&position=P One could argue that Treinen has more trade value than Hand. I doubt the uninspiring package of Jalen Beeks, Michael Chavis, Travis Lakins and Heath Hembree (who will be arbitration eligible next offseason) would be enough to land Treinen alone, much less the closer and Jed Lowrie. *
  11. Jed Lowrie has posted 5.8 fWAR, valued at $46.4 million, over the last nine months of baseball, playing in 225 of Oakland's 236 games: https://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=4418&position=2B/SS#value MLB Prospect Watch ranks 24-year-old Jalen Beeks 15th, 25-year-old Ty Buttery 27th and 24-year-old Tzu-Wei Lin unranked in a lightly regarded Red Sox farm system: http://m.mlb.com/prospects/2018?list=bos
  12. We're in rare agreement.
  13. That Gold Glover, Byron Buxton, has an OPS+ of 7 this year to go with his career OPS+ of 80 while Jackie Bradley has an OPS+ of 56 this year to go with his career OPS+ of 89. The Minnesota Twins, however, would have defensively elite outfielders who bat from opposites sides of the plate.
  14. On another thread a poster suggested a trade of two-plus increasingly expensive years of Jackie Bradley for the expiring contract of Minnesota second baseman Brian Dozier.
  15. That might work if the Twins are not scared off by Jackie Bradley’s escalating salaries in his final two years of arbitration.
  16. Rafael Devers has posted 0.8 fWAR in 71 games while Pablo Sandoval has posted 0.6 fWAR in 59 games. Baseball Reference must be a day behind by listing Devers with 0.1 bWAR in 70 games and Sandoval with 0.7 bWAR in 58 games. Each collects a paycheck from the Red Sox.
  17. FanGraphs currently gives the Twins a 6.8 percent chance of qualifying for the postseason: https://www.fangraphs.com/standings/playoff-odds If that number does not increase significantly as the trade deadline approaches, Brian Dozier could be available. However, I question.whether the Red Sox have the pieces needed for even a two-month rental.
  18. Minnesota second baseman Brian Dozier is a power-hitting right handed bat who at the trade deadline will have about $3 million left on his expiring contract. Dozier is off to a slow start this year after posting 6.2 and 5.0 fWAR the last two seasons. Batting lead off, Dozier posted triple-digit runs and double-digit steals in each of the last four seasons with a combined 127 home runs.
  19. The FanGraphs projections have the Seattle Mariners falling just short of .500 the rest of the season: https://www.fangraphs.com/standings/playoff-odds
  20. The AL East has represented the American League in the World Series once in the past eight seasons.
  21. The Red Sox and Yankees have the advantage of playing in a division with three losing teams that are a combined 41 games below .500. The AL East is a cumulative 9 games above .500 while the AL West, with four teams at .500 or above, is a cumulative 33 games above .500. The AL East is 46-55 in head-to-head competition against the AL West this season. Headed by the defending World Series champion and presumptive 2018 favorite Houston Astros, the AL West may set the pace this season.
  22. All I recall is a refuted report that Seattle turned down a Ben Cherington offer of Jackie Bradley for Charlie Furbush: https://www.overthemonster.com/2015/5/15/8611723/mariners-rejected-red-sox-trade-offer-of-jackie-bradley-jr-for
  23. When did Dave Dombrowski almost trade Jackie Bradley to Seattle?
  24. J.D. Martinez was traded to a contender last year on July 19.
