  1. A Red Sox division title is a 97.3 percent lock, according to one source: https://www.fangraphs.com/standings/playoff-odds ... and a 99 percent lock, according to another source: https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2018-mlb-predictions/
  2. Rafael Devers, who has a career OPS+ of 97, posted an OPS+ of 112 in 240 plate appearances as a rookie and an OPS+ of 89 in 432 plate appearances in this second season. Will Middlebrooks posted an OPS+ of 121 in 286 plate appearances as a rookie in 2012 and an OPS+ of 87 in 348 plate appearances in his second season for a cumulative OPS+ of 102 at that point. Of course the big difference is that Devers is three years younger than Middlebrooks was at those stages of their MLB careers. Earlier this season I suggested that Devers could be a future All Star or the second coming of Philadelphia third baseman Maikel Franco, who like his fellow Dominican was a Top 20 prospect on a Baseball America preseason list. I suspect Franco, not Middlebrooks, remains the floor for Devers.
  3. Even with the Red Sox 53 games above .500, the Yankees play in a division in which opposing teams have a cumulative .500 record. The Athletics play in a division in which opposing teams have a cumulative record 28 games above .500. The A's, who are 18-8 against AL East clubs, might have better record than the Yankees playing in the easier division.
  4. After the computer program was written years ago, the developers could just sit back and watch the computer generate the statistics. I suspect the program is much simpler than those found in many industries outside of sports.
  5. Jackie Bradley's career splits: https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.fcgi?id=bradlja02&year=Career&t=b
  6. Eduardo Rodriguez and Carlos Rodon provide interesting comps as 25-year-old lefthanders with three more arbitration seasons after earning $2.4 million and $2.3 million, respectively, this year as Super Twos. This year the 6-foot-2, 220-pound Rodriguez has posted 1.9 fWAR in 19 starts. Entering today's game ZiPS, Steamer and FanGraphs Depth Charts project Rodriguez with rest-of-season WAR of 0.4, 0.3 and 0.3, respectively, in four starts. This year the 6-foot-3, 235-pound Rodon has posted 1.2 fWAR in 14 starts. Entering today's game ZiPS, Steamer and FanGraphs Depth Charts project Rodon with rest-of-season WAR of 0.3, 0.3 and 0.3, respectively, in four starts.
  7. Over his last 17 games, Jackie Bradley Jr. has posted an impressive .367/.400/.600/1.000 line. In a 17-game stretch in May 2016, Bradley posted a .468/.542/.855/1.397 line: https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.fcgi?id=bradlja02&t=b&year=2016
  8. This is not the first time 28-year-old Jackie Bradley Jr. has figured it out: New dad Jackie Bradley Jr. AL Player of Month WWW.MLB.COM BALTIMORE -- Jackie Bradley Jr. went 2-for-2 on Thursday and he wasn't even in the Red Sox's lineup. Thanks largely to his recent 29-game hitting streak, Bradley earned American League Player of the Month honors for the first time Thursday, but it was hardly the highlight of his afternoon. The Red We should caution against cherry-picking his recent performance as indicative just as we should caution against cherry-picking his early-season performance as indicative.
  9. fWAR values rounded to the nearest tenth. Without the rounding Craig Kimbrel ranks sixth, as reflected in the dollar values: https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=rel&lg=all&qual=y&type=6&season=2018&month=0&season1=2016&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0
  10. Among relievers this year Craig Kimbrel ranks 31st in fWAR: https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=rel&lg=all&qual=y&type=8&season=2018&month=0&season1=2018&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&page=1_30 Kimbrel ranks sixth among relievers in fWAR since joining the Red Sox in 2016: https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=rel&lg=all&qual=y&type=8&season=2018&month=0&season1=2016&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0 Although fWAR may not be the best measure of a reliever's contributions, the rankings raise questions about Kimbrel's worth. https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/war-and-relievers/
  11. Assuming Lucas Giolito is done for the night, this would mark the righthander's eighth quality start in his last 10 trips to the mound. I regret benching the 24-year-old Giolito on my fantasy team.
  12. August 18 against Tampa Bay. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.fcgi?id=martijd02&t=b&year=2018
  13. Over his last nine starts coming into tonight's game, White Sox righthander Lucas Giolito had held opponents to a .214/.296/.388/.685 line: https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.fcgi?id=giolilu01&t=p&year=2018
  14. I respect individual tastes.
  15. No garbage. Some fans want to see a baseball player as something more than a one-dimensional human being on this earth solely for our sporting entertainment. http://www.espn.com/espn/otl/news/story?id=6395744
  16. No need to be outraged ... just another side of (a younger) J.D. Martinez: http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/columnists/steve_buckley/2018/08/buckley_red_sox_jd_martinez_gets_a_for_effort_f_in_history
  17. I just found the report mildly interesting. J.D. Martinez may have been raised in a gun culture of Florida, which has seen its share of gun violence with the Orlando nightclub shootings, the Stoneman Douglas High School tragedy and the fatalities at the Jacksonville video game competition days after a fatal shooting at a high school football game in the same city. The mother of Seattle second baseman Dee Gordon was shot to death in Florida as the victim of domestic violence when Gordon was 6 years old. Martinez and Mike Napoli are the most prominent baseball products of Charles Flanagan High School in Pembroke Pines, Florida. Flanagan and Stoneman Douglas are Miami area baseball powerhouses that played each other twice this year after the February shootings. http://www.maxpreps.com/high-schools/stoneman-douglas-eagles-(parkland,fl)/baseball/schedule.htm
  18. This continent has been inhabited for 17,000 to 90,000 years, depending on the estimate, but the dominant English language in the United States is from another continent and arrived less than 500 years ago. I suspect the U.S. may have the highest percentage of monolinguists of any country in the world (in part because of the wide spread of English in commerce).
  19. Don't mess with J.D. Martinez: https://nypost.com/2018/08/27/red-sox-stars-controversial-hitler-and-gun-instagram-surfaces/ ... at least with the 25-year-old J.D. Martinez.
  20. The Red Sox apparently have the highest winning percentage of any professional team in MLB-affiliated baseball: https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/40037140_1949690208424263_6523972240776626176_n.png?_nc_cat=0&oh=6d6cc99abe32ad8800dd74587000e58e&oe=5BEE422D My local short-season Class A team is second.
  21. I had enough confidence in young Shane Bieber to include the 23-year-old righthander in my fantasy lineup against the Red Sox.
  22. Leonys Martin, the fleet outfielder the Guardians acquired from the Tigers in a deadline trade. http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/24416988/leonys-martin-cleveland-Guardians-being-released-hospital-infection
  23. The Red Sox have an 82.38 (.698) record overall, 19-11 (.633) in one-run games and 28-9 (.757) in blowout games (of 5+ margins). https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/BOS/2018-schedule-scores.shtml The Orioles have a 37-88 (.296) record overall, 11-23 (.324) in one-run games and 10-24 (.294 in blowout games. https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/BAL/2018-schedule-scores.shtml
  24. This Mariner fan was about to write the same thing. I suspect a team's record in one-run games should regress to that club's record in games decided by more than one run. This year's Red Sox should have a better record in one-run games than the Orioles do.
  25. The Seattle season has been an all-time "anomaly," according to FanGraphs columnist Jeff Sullivan: https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-mariners-still-look-like-an-all-time-anomaly/
