  1. Given luxury tax considerations, three questions marks in the starting rotation and Mookie Betts' reported desire to enter free agency in a year, the Red Sox may not be negotiating from a position of strength.
  2. Overpays on what sides?
  3. According to the website, David Price, Nathan Eovaldi, Jackie Bradley Jr. and Marcus Walden have a combined negative trade value of $81.7 million. Mookie Betts' surplus value of $50 million still leaves a negative value of $31.7 million. https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/trade-simulator/ A.J. Pollock, Joc Pederson and Kenley Jansen have a combined negative value of $33.5 million, according to that website. Gavin Lux has a surplus value of $88.5 million, Dustin May $61.4 million, Keibert Ruiz $50.6 million and Alex Verdugo $50.1 million. Be realistic ... perhaps Mookie Betts for five years of 23-year-old outfielder Alex Verdugo would work.
  4. Most of the trade offers are light on the Red Sox end: https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/trade-simulator/
  5. The doctor reportedly speaks out: https://sports.yahoo.com/doctor-center-yankees-jacoby-ellsbury-154519923.html
  6. A joke that finished 19 games ahead of the Red Sox, who fired their top executive in-season. Humor is in the funny bone of the beholder (and IMHO neither franchise is a "joke").
  7. No need to disparage Oregon native Dick Fosbury: https://jamesclear.com/dick-fosbury
  8. In light of the Yankees' reported attempt to recoup, could the insurer cite the same reasons in an attempt to recoup its payments to the Yankees? It's probably all in the details of the insurance policy, the Ellsbury contract and the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  9. Last offseason, coming off 89 wins, the Seattle Mariners decided to "step back" and shoot for contention in 2021 and later. The immediate result was a 94-loss season this year. This offseason, coming off 84 wins, the Red Sox face tough decisions, especially with luxury tax considerations and three question marks in the starting rotation.
  10. Not to mention the questionable status of Chris Sale.
  11. The Trade Simulator is OK with those trades: https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/trade-simulator/ Who would take the mound for the 2020 Red Sox?
  12. Would the Rangers be willing to pay David Price a net $20 million annually for the next three seasons?
  13. Steamer projects a 26-year-old Roughed Odor with a 2020 fWAR of 1.1 in 138 games and a 29-year-old Wil Myers with a 2020 fWAR of 0.6 in 122 games. Odor has an AAV of $8.25 million with three years and $36 million remaining on his six-year, $49.5 million contract. Myers has an AAV of $13.83 million with three years and $61 million remaining on his six-year, $83 million contract. One website gives Odor a negative value of $26.7 milion while giving Myers a negative value of $60.3 million: https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/trade-simulator/
  14. According to one website, David Price has a negative value of $60 million while Bobby Dalbec and Michael Chavis have surplus values of $18.8 million and $17.7 million, respectively: https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/trade-simulator/ The website gives surplus values of $50 million for Mookie Betts, $35.9 million for Andrew Benintendi and $28 million for Eduardo Rodriguez. Theoretically, a package of Price, Benintendi and Rodriguez should yield a return of a player with about $4 million in surplus value. Theoretically.
  15. David Price is a 34-year-old lefthander with three years and $96 million remaining on his contract. Last offseason Robinson Cano was a 36-year-old second baseman with five years and $120 million remaining on his contract. The Seattle Mariners were able to move Cano's contract in exchange for prospects Jarred Kelenic and Justin Dunn, who now rank No. 13 and No. 70 at MLB Prospect Watch: http://m.mlb.com/prospects/2019?list=sea Of course, the trade was more complicated than that. The Mariners surrendered a valuable long-term asset in closer Edwin Diaz, chipped in $20 million and assumed the deadweight contracts of Jay Bruce and Anthony Swarzak. The lesson, though, is that the Red Sox could move the Price contract by offsetting its negative value with an asset such as Andrew Benintendi, Mookie Betts and/or Eduardo Rodriguez. The package would likely hurt the Sox chances in 2020 but could contribute to the club's long-range health.
  16. Some households live paycheck to paycheck while others set aside savings to be spent at the most opportune time. A team should not be penalized for saving for the future.
  17. The evidence supported the statement that "Not all contracts work out," which was made in response to the OP's "What a waste of $153 million dollars. HUGE mistake by Cashman."
  18. MLB trade ideas that just might work WWW.MLB.COM Last week’s General Managers Meetings presented an opportunity for executives around the league to lay the groundwork for potential trades this offseason. That got us thinking. Where might Mookie Betts or Kris Bryant wind up? Will the Yankees opt to deal for a starter rather than signing a prominent free According to one website, Mookie Betts has a surplus value of $50 million while Joc Pederson, Dustin May and Keibert Ruiz have a combined surplus value of $124.7 million: https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/trade-simulator/ May or Ruiz alone match or exceed the surplus value of Betts, according to that website.
  19. The Dodger front office probably has not lost sleep over that trade as the Dodgers have won seven straight division titles (without capturing a World Series crown). The fWAR standings in the seven full seasons since the trade: https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2019&month=0&season1=2013&ind=0&team=0,ts&rost=&age=&filter=&players=0&startdate=&enddate= ... and the overall won-loss standings: https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=pit&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2019&month=0&season1=2013&ind=0&team=0,ts&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=2013-01-01&enddate=2019-12-31&sort=2,d
  20. Indeed. Jacoby Ellsbury produced 8.1 fWAR for the $153 million investment while Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval produced a combined negative 0.7 fWAR for the $183 million investment.
  21. That's the final $26 million payment on a $153 million bill for Jacoby Ellsbury after the Yankees slipped under the luxury tax threshold. The Red Sox have exceeded the luxury tax threshold in consecutive years in paying off the entire $183 million bill for Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval. In that sense the Sox are still paying in an effort to reset the luxury tax calculation.
  22. It freed up money for the Red Sox to sign Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval the following offseason for a combined $183 million. Not all contracts work out.
  23. In April 2015 the Red Sox signed Rick Porcello to a four-year, $82.5 million extension when the righthander was coming off three seasons with an ERA+ of 100 over combined 558 innings. Porcello, now nearly five years later, is coming off three seasons with an ERA+ of 96 over a combined 569 innings. A durable innings-eater has value despite mediocre performance.
  24. MLB Trade Rumors predicts a one-year, $11 million contract for Rick Porcello: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/11/mlb-free-agent-predictions-2020.html
  25. What changed between September 29 and today?
