  1. Precisely. Good (and mediocre) teams in the AL East inflated their records playing upwards of 18 games against the Baltimore Orioles. The Rangers and Angels experienced a free fall by going through the second-half meat-grinder of the Astros (50-22, .694) and the Athletics (46-24, .657). At the end of the day AL East teams were .500 in intradivisional play but below .500 outside the division. AL West clubs were .500 in intradivisional play but 34 games above .500 outside the division.
  2. The "AL east meat grinder" finished with a cumulative record below .500 this year while the far tougher American League West finished 34 games above .500. AL West teams scored more runs than their AL East counterparts.
  3. One website gives Jackie Bradley Jr. a surplus value of $1.8 million based on an adjusted field value of $12.8 million and his projected 2020 salary of $11 million: https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/trade-simulator/
  4. MLB Trade Rumors columnist Steve Adams hinted that his site may project the Red Sox landing soon-to-be 40-year-old lefthander Rich Hill: https://www.jotcast.com/chat/ch-6267.html
  5. The Red Sox are unlikely to tender Jackie Bradley Jr. a contract unless the Sox already have a trade in place. Bradley probably is worth his projected 2020 salary of $11 million to some teams but not to the Red Sox because of the luxury tax restraints. If a trade has not been prearranged, a potential trade partner would have the leverage of the Red Sox pressure to get under the luxury tax threshold. The Sox don't want to be in that position. Then again, the Red Sox may simply to decline to tender a contract to Bradley.
  6. The St. Louis Cardinals never had a lead in the 2004 World Series: https://www.baseball-reference.com/postseason/2004_WS.shtml
  7. MassLive speculates on next head of the Red Sox front office: https://www.masslive.com/redsox/2019/10/boston-red-sox-gm-candidates-whos-left-with-andrew-friedman-other-top-experienced-candidates-unavailable.html
  8. According to one website, Gavin Lux has a surplus value of $85.1 million, Alex Verdugo $55.8 million and Dustin May $63.9 million: https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/trade-simulator/ Mookie Betts has a surplus value of $51.4 million and David Price a value of a negative $69.9 million.
  9. A career public defender concedes that he wants eyewitness testimony on his side despite its lack of reliability.
  10. Don't confuse reliability with persuasiveness. Eyewitness testimony may be highly persuasive with a jury despite its documented lack of reliability.
  11. With a three-week gap as the Yankees swept the Twins in the postseason.
  12. The Red Sox reportedly have spoken with former Cincinnati Reds manager Bryan Price about their pitching coach opening: Which raises the question of who is speaking on behalf of the Red Sox.
  13. In 2018 the Red Sox won 108 games while the Houston Astros won 103 games playing in a tougher division. The Red Sox were 3-4 against the Astros in the regular season before eliminating the Astros 4-1 in the American League Championship Series.
  14. As an insightful (or inciteful) poster wrote in August, in the cold, dark nights of a postseason-less October, Red Sox fans will always have warm memories of the 2018 World Series run. Or not.
  15. The Yankees had a good team that lost to a better team (from the tougher division that includes my favorite team). Nevertheless, this poster will pull for the Washington Nationals in the World Series because when the Nats were struggling in April I saw two games in DC where my daughter works. No hate anywhere.
  16. This poster is happy the Yankees lost but holds their 2019 club in high regard. Remarkable season. Hate should be reserved for matters more important than sports (or avoided altogether).
  17. A Red Sox fan taunting a team that finished 19 games ahead of the Sox would be like a Seattle fan taunting a Red Sox club that finished 16 games ahead of the Mariners. That would never happen.
  18. And some posters are most prominent only when the Yankees lose.
  19. When was the last time the Red Sox signed a 28-year-old righthand-hitting free agent outfielder who last played for the Cleveland Guardians?
  20. According to one website, Mookie Betts has a surplus value of $51.4 million with one year of team control while Joc Pederson has a surplus value of $12.1 million with two years of team control: https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/trade-simulator/
  21. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Series_television_ratings Viewership was down significantly for last year's World Series between the Red Sox and Dodgers.
  22. ... according to Jason Mastrodonato of the Boston Herald:
  23. Valid point.

  25. This year after games of May 23 the Red Sox were 27-23 (.540) while the Washington Nationals were 19-31 (.380). The remainder of the season the Red Sox were 57-55 (.509) while the Nationals were 74-38 (.661).
