  1. Exactly right. There's a big difference between being a #3 behind Chris Sale & David Price and being a #3 in the Baltimore staff. Porcillo would be the #1 or #2 in Baltimore
  2. Don't give up on us here, Mal! We may not always agree with you but we respect you and like having you around.
  3. The amazing thing about this game is that it's still 1-0 in spite of the fact that the ump has a very small strike zone. These two pitchers have had to throw a lot of pitches inside the black to get the call.
  4. That phrase ^^ is the "alternate truth" when one doesn't want to admit to TANKING.
  5. One of my personal favorites. I've even used the metaphor of "albatross" for a Sox contract in the past IIRC.
  6. How's that glass this morning... half empty or half full?
  7. The easiest way to have stretches of mediocrity is by not taking the chances on the big name FA's. Every FA signing is a gamble and as in some gambles you win some and you lose some. Fortunately for us fans it's not our money and JH is willing to take his lumps with the bad signings in order to get the god ones. In MLB's effort to enforce mediocrity he game is becoming more and more "rigged" against the big spending teams. Their goal is for every team to be competitive every year. MLB doesn't refer to it as the "Competitive Balance Tax" for nothing, ya know.
  8. JBJ turned a HR into a double.
  9. True, but you have to play the teams as they come on your schedule. In spite of all these HR's when midnight comes around it'll only be one more win in the W column. But you're right.. it is fun to watch. Especially if you're a Sox fan. An O's fan... not so much.
  10. ...and the thing that's consistent from month to month is his GG defense. There's more than one side to this game, ya know!
  11. Are you really going to get me started on Ryan Dempster again?
  12. As long as we don't start talking about the number O I'm good. I cringe every time I hear someone say that Maine's Area Code is two-oh-seven.
  13. This is what Bill James said 30 years ago, that the way to build a team is through the minors, then using Free Agents to fill gaps when minor league players don't progress as the FO has hoped/predicted.
  14. And the thing about crapshoots is that sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. In this case "we" are gambling with JH's money and the reward for winning far outstrips the risk of losing.
  15. Great throw by Vaz. Bogaerts made the classic mistake of not waiting for the ball. The play shouldn't have been that close.
  16. You're a sick man, and I mean that in the best way possible. I'm just not sure which is sicker, that you're aware of that or that you can quote it at a moment's notice.
  17. Don't let a little thing like the facts get in the way of an opportunity to bash Mookie.
  18. Great idea for a T-shirt, all proceeds going to one of Papi's charities. I've still got one of the original Boston Strong caps. Disgustingly filthy and I wear it with pride.

  20. Player B should be leading off (High OBP), Player A batting second (Higher BA), and Player C batting 3rd (Higher OPS). There! Now that's settled! Now let's move these two posts to Bells thread in the General Baseball Forum.
  21. This whole discussion seems to center around what happens in the first time through the lineup and yet that only happens once in the game. Shouldn't we be focusing on what happens when the #1 hitter comes up after the #9 hitter, which probably will happen two, three, four or more times a game?
  22. This may come down to a discussion about what is a "good" hitter and what they bring to the lineup. OPB and OPS have something in common. The common element is that they both are dependent on how often a player reaches base. It's just that the player with the higher OPS has more power. Since even a successful hitter only reaches base about one time out of three I want my #3 hitter to have that one time out of three to have that power. I'll take that over my #3 hitter maybe getting a walk or getting a single and leaving the big scoring opportunity to the #4 hitter... who also is unsuccessful two times out of three. Nobody is going to be successful every time, but optimize your chances to score. Edit... The more I think about this the more amazed I am that the stat geeks have decided that the better hitter should be the #2 guy and that the #3 guy isn't as important as even the #4 or #5 guy. Equally as amazing is that people bought into it!
  23. This says it better than I could have. Five times out of nine, more than half the time, the #3 guy comes up with someone on in the first inning. That's why I want a hitter, an OPS guy there.
  24. In the first inning the leadoff hitter has the best chance of coming to bat with no outs on the board. (DUH!) Next is the #2 hitter, then the #3 hitter. After the order turns over the #3 hitter probably has the least chance of coming to bat with outs already on the board since he has the two best hitters on the team up ahead of him. That also means that he has the best chance of coming up with runners on base, and that's where I want my OPS guy.
  25. He may at the beginning of the game but theoretically the #1 hitter might be in the running for that distinction too. He's got what may be the three weakest hitters on the team up ahead of him. Therefore the #1 hitter probably comes to bat with one or two outs more than anyone on the team, and the #2 hitter may be second in that distinction. That leave the #3 guy with the two best hitters up before him and therefore with the best chance to drive in runs.
