  1. Ans wasn't Bogaert's injury one that you said "could go on for a long time"? IIRC you said his injury could keep him out of action until September. Everything, that's everything. I've read say it'll probably be at least three weeks before Judge can even swing a bat and the residuals of this injury could take up to two months to recover from. Like you, I haven't seen the x-rays so I have to take the doctor's word for his recovery time. With the Yankees being 5 1/2 back and Judge out for at least three weeks Cashman should be beating the bushes for a power hitter. Maybe the time is right to pay the price and sign Bryce Harper. Staying 5 1/2 games back for another month isn't a viable option for the Yankees now...and without Judge it could - and probably will - get worse!
  2. Where's our resident doctor on this topic? He's usually right up to date with us - at least regarding Red Sox injuries.
  3. That's great, my friend. Now get off your computer and enjoy the experience!
  4. I like "jocks", a/k/a "athletic supporters".
  5. I'll say it again: Thanks, Manny.
  6. You and I agree on our biggest gripe about Ben but we phrase it differently. While you say "he never dealt any prospects" I say "he allowed the Red Sox to languish in last place for two consecutive years while stockpiling the best minor league system in baseball". In retrospect, the downside is the two last place finishes. The upside is that he extended these players time before Free Agency by one or two years. That may be worth the two last place finishes now but they were hard to take at the time. I don't think anyone is saying that the farm isn't depleted but I don't get the 'panic' about it. In exchange for that depleted farm we've got one of the best teams in baseball and many of them are sewed up for a couple of more years. IMO we should be enjoying this rather than 'borrowing trouble' about the potential cliff.
  7. Will it? Had he not "gutted the farm" we'd be looking at the Yankees' taillights up in the distance and we'd be saying, "Wait 'til next year!" Next year is 2019 when there's no reason to believe the Yankees are going to be worse than they are this year. I like this team's chances very much in 2018. I also like our chances in 2019 but there are no guarantees in either year. After 2019 this window begins to close so we now have two years in which to make our hay. However, I'd rather be in the thick of things for two years than having the best farm system in the majors this year and saying "Wait until 2019!".
  8. Yeah, but aren't we allowed to dream a little?
  9. Not really. IMO it's sick/sad (take your pick) that any parent would encourage/allow their son or daughter to have an unneeded surgery explicitly so they would have a better chance at a college scholarship or a pro career.
  10. And yet I remember when some here wanted Hembree's head on a platter after a couple of bad appearances. The fact is that most pitchers are like that. They have good days and bad days. I'm hoping Kelley turns things around and becomes the pitcher he was earlier. It could happen.
  11. I know. And I'm hearing that he's not the only one. It could be an Urban Legend, but I've heard that some parents are now opting for TJ surgery for their sons because sometimes a pitcher can throw harder after the surgery. Sick.
  12. Help me a little here. I know I've seen games resumed from the point of suspension, so what's the criteria for resuming a game vs. starting it over? ...just for my general knowledge.
  13. This state also instituted a pitch count for high school pitchers three (IIRC) years ago. In the past a pitcher's eligibility was determined by how many innings he'd pitched over the previous days but it got changed to a pitch count after a coach had a 17 year old pitcher throw 162 pitches in the State Championship game. No, that's not a typo. 162.
  14. I'm good with that approach, and this may be the best time to do it while Vaz is out. It's make or break time for Swihart. And BTW, I agree that most high school coaches will use their best athlete as a pitcher. I was referring in a previous post to the position they play when they aren't pitching. [Although my point may be a bit passe now as the governing body of athletics in this (our) state now "strongly encourages" coaches to not use their pitchers as catchers on days when they're not pitching due to the repeated throws. They're also suggesting that it may also hurt a pitcher's arm by playing on the left side of the infield. Some coaches abide by this and some don't.]
  15. I think that's called "Whistling past the graveyard". When Jax shows up here it means one of two things. Either the something bad is happening to the Sox or Jax is panicking. Which could this be??
  16. No short porch in RF, maybe?
  17. As I've been known to say about my own life, "It seemed like a Hell of an idea.... at the time!"
  18. IMO the answer to your question is "money". I know you couched the idea in not being worried about going over the 2nd tier but a significant amount of $$ can be saved by putting off Castillo's promotion until 2019, plus the one thing we don't need at the moment is another outfielder - unless the FO doesn't have faith in JDM's abilities out there. And in fairness I hadn't heard about the interest in Austin Jackson.
  19. I'm not down on this trade at all. Eovaldi may be the kind of guy we need to fill a gap right now. However, I have to say that I'd like this deal a lot better if Eovaldi were signed through another year. As it is we traded Beeks for a rental, and a rental that may cost a lot more to sign in the future if he works out for us.
  20. Being somewhat familiar with high school players and knowing that most coaches put their best athlete at SS, what I want to know is this: if Swihart played 2b, who was the shortstop!?
  21. I agree with this post. The rub may come when Vaz comes back and Cora has to decide between the better hitter and the better catcher.
  22. Even that infamous triple play didn't involve a lack of hustle. It got started because the umpire failed to make the call on an Infield Fly - and the runners got hung out to dry.
