It’s not so much about blame during the negotiations as it is the owners stopping everything unnecessarily with a lockout and transaction freeze and closing spring training and cancelling the first two series (and counting) and then telling us “but fans are the top priority!” Now a transaction freeze and lockout probably helped the Red Sox, Dodgers, Yankees, etc. in the short term. But the reality is everything could have continued under the old CBA until a new agreement was reached. And while the players might have grumbled, at least we would not be in a situation where the owners are taking the game away from the fans piece by piece…

Manfred is getting hard to believe. The owners repeatedly take away every aspect of the game and then blame the players for not capitulating. They’ve turned into movie villains who kill onset extras with ease and then turn to the hero and drop the blame on him by saying “See, if you had only given up, I would not have had to do that.”

So apparently actual progress in the labor talks today. However to get in a full season, they need a deal by 5pm EST today. Unfortunately for the owners, their new deadline is now after the automatic renewal for MLB.tv and numerous subscribers cancelled en masse yesterday…

Yes, but it’s very odd. There are not many Hall of Famers who don’t have their numbers retired as it is (John Smoltz and Alan Trammell don’t), but the list of Hall of Famers whose number was retired for a much lesser player has to be really short. It would be like watching the Red Sox retire #24. Not for Dwight Evans and not for Manny Ramirez, but instead for Mike Stanley…

No, but I think it is against a league average. So a low total of innings would affect it in that case…

Combs played his whole career in NY, and they retired him number for another guy with an OPS some 200 points lower…

Maris is on the very short list of eligible players with two MVP awards that are not in Cooperstown. I’m ok with the number being retired for him. (Dale Murphy and Juan Gonzalez are the rest of the list.) Nettles should be best remembered for stuffing a bat with super balls, only to have it break and scatter super balls all over the diamond…

UZR/150 is scaled up, but if a player isn’t playing much and has limited action when he is on the field, getting a negative UZR isn’t that difficult. And then simply scaling it to a larger number of games just exacerbates a potential inaccuracy…

I actually like the idea. To add to the excitement, have mid-season regulation. I.E if a team drops their payroll from a top 15 to a bottom 15 mid-season, they switch leagues as well…
