    And presumably in pitching shape. With Song, we’ve made a lot of the fact that he’s only thrown 17 IP in Rookie Ball. And that his entire career consists of facing only 65 hitters, of whom I’m willing to bet none of are currently in MLB and no more than 2 ever will be. What hasn’t been mentioned is this also took place across SEVEN STARTS. Now granted, Rookie Ball starting pitchers rarely go five innings. And while Song was averaging just over two, it certainly wasn’t for ineffectiveness. But it does point he didn’t have the arm strength to pitch multiple innings 3 years ago, when he was fresh out of college after his stellar Navy career. Three years of not pitching later, it probably didn’t improve. And the task won’t be easier, as MLB hitters on average have better plate discipline than Rookie Ball teenagers, have the ability to foul off more pitches to stay alive, and, well, get more hits. A deal or Song returns. No other option…

    The big “what if” was Josh Fields. If the Sox protected him in the Rule 5 draft instead of letting Houston take him, would Boston have been able to trade him to the Dodgers for Yordan Alvarez? And let’s not forget in our Wayback Machine, the Sox selected Marwin Gonzalez in the Rule 5 draft from the Cubs. And then traded him to Houston where he learned to increase his value through cheating. The biggest Rule 5 pick in Sox history may have been another former Yankee in Lenny DiNardo, who appeared in 22 games for that curse-breaking 2004 Sox team.

    The award situation has some similarities to Song as well as some differences. Ward is 26 years old and his MiLB career is very bottom-heavy. He has 41 IP in AA and nothing in AAA. It’s not ridiculous to think a player with that background coupled with his injury history is likely to be returned. Except Washington. Full rebuild mode. Certainly Ward has to impress somewhat, but his threshold is probably quite lower than what the Phillies will need from Song. So with Ward, he could slate anywhere from Opening Day starter to “return to sender” by the time this plays out. His likelihood of being returned is certainly below that of Song, but it isn’t exactly non-existant…

    But not what I asked. Does he get a year of MLB service time during prolonged Rule 5 status?

    Question maybe nobody knows. Players on the Military List do accrue service time. They do. So if Song spent 2023 as an inactive member of the ML, his Rule 5 status starts next year, but would he be one year closer to arbitration eligibility? Probably a moot question, because had Song not been granted permission to play this year, Philly probably returns him to Boston same day and tries again next year…

    By the time the Sox got Sale, he was making $12-15 mill per year, but on a lower ASV. Soto is making $23mill this year. For Soto, that is a far, far cry from free agent money. That’s only free agent money if you’re Trevor Story…
