  1. I wasn’t looking at it financially. I meant from a pitching depth perspective. The Sox lost out on Sale for most of the 4 previous seasons, and had no replacement ready for this despite it becoming a repeated inevitability. The Braves had a slew of young pitchers, the bulk of were MLB ready but inexperienced. If they didn’t want to rely on any of Waldrep, Smith-Shawver, Elder, Schwellenbach, Vines, or Dodd for a full season, Sale was a good option to take. Unlike the Sox, they didn’t need Sale to stay healthy all season. Because they had the arms behind him the Sox didn’t have. So yes, their depth put them in a better position to gamble on Sale…
  2. What pitcher represents a better gamble? Pitcher A - 37yo with 240IP over the 3 previous seasons, including 164IP the season before? Pitcher B - 35yo with 150IP over the 3 previous seasons, with a high of 102IP over that stretch?
  3. I don’t like ERA, but when it is within 0.05 of FIP, it shouldn’t be ignored. Of course, fWAR and bWAR are bad ways to summarize his healthy return in 2023, because those are season-long accomplishments and 60% of his season was before the latest injury. If you’re insisting he finished 2023 healthy, how do you summarize it without including the larger chunk from before he was hurt? Or do you just ignore the injury and pretend it was obvious?
  4. In mine, they lost that gamble 4 times already…
  5. They took a gamble they could afford to take. Or, in your world, they saw 40 healthy IP from a 4.00 ERA pitcher and thought “he’s back!!”
  6. Keep up your Sox winning streak…
  7. We’ve seen that before. Sale finished 2021 healthy and even pitched in the postseason. And still only last 5 innings the next year…
  8. Trading either of them will require a really specific situation…
  9. If the Sox are selling, Jansen, Pivetta, Refsnyder and Martin are the most desirable targets. If they’re buying, I do wonder who they are able to part with…
  10. There were a few others. Given Sale’s complete vanishing act since 2019, why? Even if he was actually healthy, it’s been 6 years since we’ve seen this. No one saw that, except the delusional and the liars…
  11. I think Randy thinks he’s the only one who saw how that trade has turned out…
  12. I think he’s going to struggle to break that 140 IP limit…
  13. I like Bello. He will be fine…
  14. Maybe not, but the point being Alonso isn’t a farm buster. Of course, what he does seem to be is a very unpleasant human being…
  15. BTV gives Alonso a surplus trade value of 6.3. Wikelman Gonzalez has a surplus trade value of 5.7. Even if Willie isn’t the mark, this should give some perspective…
  16. What is the purpose of City Connect uniforms? And as much as I don’t like it, Yankee pinstripes really are the most famous uniform in MLB…
  17. It also explains their interest in Cooper Criswell and maybe explains their lack of interest in Josh Winckowski…
  18. That does make sense. The Yankee pinstripes are already one of the most iconic uniforms in all of American sports. And it would be a slap in the face for the A’s to make a City Connect uniform while they’re in the process of disconnecting from Oakland…
  19. “Still like him better than Steinbrenner.”
  20. I think Cora will do that. Hamilton is playing because he’s hitting, but it’s not going to last. He’s not going to hit better in the majors than he did in A, AA, or AAA. And his glove at SS isn’t going to keep him in the lineup when he’s not hitting. So when that happens, what? Keep trotting him out there? Or re-arrange the OF to put the best defensive SS on the team at SS? Unless they bring in someone or promote someone, the options at shortstop are pretty limited. Rafaela, Hamilton and Gonzalez. And if Hamilton isn’t hitting, is he really an option?
  21. I suggested him for a trade but not because I wanted him gone. His years of control made him a valuable trade chip. I was also told repeatedly he was not one…
  22. I had him benching Hamilton for Yoshida. Refsnyder drops into a bench role when Abreu returns. Valdez probably not until he plays himself out of it…
  23. Sure he could. Cora could play O’Neill in LF, Duran in CF, Rafaela at SS and plug Yoshida into DH. He’s done it before…
  24. It seems hypocritical to tell grown men they can’t have beards, they can’t wear two chains, but they do have to wear see-through pants. Also, when is it officially a beard? Does that pre-pubescent scruff on Justin Steele’s face count?
  25. Do they also have rules against pearl necklaces like the ones worn by Joc Pederson and Brayan Bello?
