  1. Boston, starting right after Story hits the 60 day IL …
  2. If he stays, his next deal needs to only be 3 years $52mill to top out the Detroit offer. Thats Tyler O’Neill money…
  3. Schedule 162 home games. Problem solved…
  4. Exactly. Games are not where players work on fielding. During a game, they get maybe 3-4 chances on average. Not much work for the 3 hours…
  5. DH is a position. It’s just easier to field than most…
  6. Is sending him back really only fine for an extra year of control? The book on him all off season was “injury-prone, struggles against offspeed stuff, and never played above AA.” Has a handful of ST games changed all this? In an earlier argument buried on the boards, I said Mayer was the most likely to break camp in Boston. But that was solely based on Story’s injury-fueled history the past 3 years. Is he really going to displace Story? Or take over 2b in the interim? I still stand by my Devers (3b), Story (SS), Bregman (2b) prediction, with the Off-mentioned caveat that if Devers isn’t playing 3b due to his shoulder, Grissom would get first crack at 2b and Bregman would handle third…
  7. True. Although that doesn’t really apply to someone like Campbell…
  8. I think most teams already know who 23-25 players on their roster will be before ST even starts, and I bet for most teams, the only unknown roster spots are the back of the bullpen and/or maybe the fifth starter. I’m sure it’s happened, but I can’t think of an instance offhand in recent years where a team unseated a contracted veteran with a prospect based on ST. Maybe the small market/ low payroll teams do this more often because their veterans have less financial commitment and are easier to bench or unload. With the money committed to the bulk of starting players, I don’t think very many are “fighting for a roster spot,” especially with the bench roles, because younger players are better of starting in AAA than sitting in MLB. I could be wrong, but I doubt it happens all that much outside of backend relievers and 5th starters…
  9. I doubt Yoshida cares what his trade value is. I think he’s just playing so he can get as many starts as possible. I like him as the DH vs RHP. Against LHP, I think Refsnyder (if not in the OF) or Romy make more sense…
  10. Dwight Evans as an Oriole. Eddie Murray as an Angel. Trevor Hoffman as a Brewer. And at the opposite end of his career, Trevor Hoffman as a Marlin.
  11. Trades certainly do happen at this point, but they are far from common. With Abreu not even playing yet, he’s not a likely candidate for any team to see as a solution for an opening. Now despite being a 3 WAR outfields with a rookie, the Sox could still option him to Worcester if they think Anthony is ready to take over. But I don’t consider that to be very likely. Really at this point, the injury progress to Devers and Yoshida will be the only factors left in determining the position players on the roster. And whose left standing probably determines the rotation. The final bullpen spot or two might be the only spot anyone is actually trying to out for…
  12. I’m not worried about a 35 yo career minor leaguer on a minor league deal derailing the season. If it ever gets to the point Stock is pitching meaningful innings, the season is already over…
  13. I don’t think the Sox are as desperate to get away from their best hitter vs RHP last year as you are. Overpaid or not, they don’t seem to see him as useless. They’ve DFAd contracts (Sandoval, Hanley) before that were close in value…
  14. The Sox current 40 man roster only has 3 position players who won’t be on the opening day 26 man roster. And one of them (Grissom?) might make it due to injury. The only other two are Sabol and Sogard. They might not be so readily expendable. Before June was out last year, Heineman found his way to MLB and even into a game simply because there was no one else left eligible to call up…
  15. Agreed. Rafaela will be in CF “as much as possible.” The Sox logjam of 1b/DH types is massively overblown as greater minds struggle to solve a problem that will easily work itself out. I mean, the season hasn’t even started yet and two of the three candidates are already questionable health wise…
  16. So we can burn him in spite of his innocence based on nothing but children panicking?
  17. I don’t put much faith in ST stats, but benching Rafaela (1.358 OPS) to play Campbell (0 for 9 with 7 Ks) doesn’t seem right. And adding Anthony and Mayer into the lineup is prioritizing getting an additional draft pick over winning games. If Yoshida starts the year on the IL and Devers is at DH, the Sox are NOT going to DFA three players to crowd up the 40 man roster with prospects. More likely, if Devers is DH and Yoshida is on the IL (which does make him less tradable), then you get GRISSOM at 2b. Forgotten man, but the Sox (and Braves) saw something in him and aren’t basing their judgments off him on one bad year. Bregman at 3b. Done. OF will be the same one that ended the season last year, assuming Abreu gets ready on time. If not, maybe Anthony has a shot. But also maybe it won’t be long enough to give him a shot…
  18. Wilson is the only one with a chance to see Boston without the season already being derailed by far too many numerous pitching injuries…
  19. Or demote him. He does have options. But most likely the Sox will need him. If you trade Yoshida and Anthony, and either Devers or Casas goes down, who steps up? Romy? Refsnyder to full time DH?
  20. If they demand Anthony or Mayer if you include Yoshida, then do not include Yoshida…
  21. I think the Sox have the potential for a really good bullpen with Slaten, Whitlock, Guerrero and Fitts…
  22. It’s going to take a lot of injuries to have him pitch meaningful innings anyway…
  23. Unless you mean rotating on and off the Injured List…
  24. It’s Scutaro. 5Gold figured it out…
