Winning the division is never a failure. It took 6 months to do and I enjoyed watching it all. Yes, it would be nice to advance beyond the divisional round. But if they lost in the ALCS, would that be considered "successful"? Ultimately only one team emerges from the season on a winning note...

I I would agree. But Dombrowski's made some moves in the past that make me question how much he cares about defense. For example when he moved Cabrera third base to accommodate Fielder even though the DH was already out for the season Xso I'm thinking maybe he'll try to squeeze any offense you can out of any place on with diamonds and if he sees Lucroy as an upgrade he might be interested. Personally I question how much Lucroy has left in the tank

Another possibility is to try to "lengthen the lineup" by upgrading a couple spots. The Sox could also sign someone like Lucroy to catch nd a cheap hitter like Duda, Morrison or Bruce for first. This does leave pretty good cash for pitching, but isn't my favorite strategy. ..

While this board undoubtedly has doctors and even non-medical people who understand ligament damage better than me, none of them have actually diagnosed Price. Tanaka was TJ candidate at one point, too, but his surgery still remains unscheduled. We'll see if Price heals enough to attempt to pitch regardless. I'm all for adding another arm, but a slugging 1b needs to top the list. As there are better starting pitchers available than 1b, I expect the latter to be acquired via trade. Which likely means dealing a starter from MLB, since the farm has very little left in the way of centerpieces. So whoever they deal also needs to be replaced. If the Sox move Bogaerts, then maybe a different direction at shortstop is the way to go. While I wouldn't hand the position to Marrero or Lin, a defender of their caliber (Ahmed? Cozart? Galvis?) still might be a contributor in ways beyond offense. ...

And how many of those 5 will actually be available in trades? Correa, Lindor and Seager are legitimate perennial MVP candidates. Bogaerts and Russell are not necessarily on the block, but both are certainly more likely to be moved. The only other shortstop of their caliber who might be traded is Gregorius, and he looks the least likely of the last three. Especially with the late-season conversion to 3b from Torres (which did not play a part in his injury)...

That's a valid point. But it's also an alternative plan in the likely event Martinez re-signs with Arizona, where he has quickly become somewhat of a legend. ..

No, because it's for a promotion and Houston apparently gave permission for the interview. It does somewhat violate the MLB policy of not making major announcements and transactions during the playoffs, but that gets broken all the time with no repercussions...

The biggest obstacle the Yankees might face is the potential obtainable of the Marlins' GM. If he insists on Judge and won't move, the Yankees undoubtedly walk. And we've all seen teams that don't budge on their demands. Some do negotiate, which is why Benintendi is still in Boston after the Sale trade. But some don't, which is why Cole Hamels isn't in Boston and his former stubborn GM is, coaching first base....

I do believe that there are topics he wants to avoid and others he cannot/shouldn't talk about. When Tom Brady is listed as "Questionable" every week and plays every Sunday, none of us suspect it's because Belichick is unaware of Tom's health...

Stanton also has a full NTC and might reject the Yankees and Sox. He is an LA native. While this guarantees nothing, I don't recall any player ever turning down a large market, defending division winner hometown team. The Sox chances rest solely on Stanton's desire to challenge the Green Monster...

Years of control is a big part of it, so it will slide unless he signs an extension. Even with more control Ketel Marte ( who was mentioned as a non-factor in that deal) can't seem to take charge in a volatile and unspectacular Arizona middle infield. And really, Nick Ahmed to Boston instead would be just fine with me. The Diamondbacks could drop in Socrates Brito or another player. The White Sox are the unpredictable team in that deal. Travis is a stopgap (like Marte) and they would want at least one good prospect. But if the Snakes are getting Bogaerts, they should certainly give one up...

And yet Bogaerts still ranked 45 on Fangraphs midseason trade value, unlike anyone else in that deal. Of course, whatever prospects CWS and AD agree upon can change anyway

Hmmmm... no. 66 players with at least 400 plate appearances had a lower offensive fWAR than Pedroia. Are you saying you could advise about 1/4 of tje starting position players in MLB?

Marte might necessitate the Sox sending more. It's very situational at that point, since I'm not sure how they value him. I wouldn't consider dropping him to be a deal breaker. I also don't think he'll be better than Bogaerts at any point...

Ok. But I'm confident those sides can work something out. I do think the Dodgers would prefer to keep Buehlet and Verdugo. Joc Pederson might be in play...

Thtee way deals are tough to predict, but one that makes some sense might be the following: Arizona gets Xander Bogaerts. White Sox get Pavin Smith, Jon Duplantier and New Lenox IL native Sam Travis. Boston gets Jose Abreu and Ketel Marte.

That seems insanely light to me too. I predict Stanton goes to the Dodgers for a package that includes Puig and someone like Walker Buehlet, Alex Verdugo or Willie Calhoun. Probably Calhoun I'm souring on Ozuna/Bradley swaps. That seems like a buy high/sell low scenario. Both Bradley and Ozuna are worth 7.3 fWAR over the past two seasons. A straight up swap would be fine, but makes less sense for Miami.

You're a doctor, right? At some point, doesn't Dombrowski talking publicly about players' medical histories and diagnoses violate HIPPA Laws. He probably has some authorization, but is there a line he can't cross? If so, doesn't it make sense to just duck the question?
