He shipped out two guys with value to upgrade. Adam Warren and Rashad Crawford were not a guys carrying a ton of value. The team already had the best record in the NL and was "winning now".

The one reason I'd be suspicious about Torres is that Epstein gave him up for a rental player. If Dombrowski did that, that's his thing. But it isn't Epstein's, unless he suspects something himself. .

Actually Cashner might not be a bad 5th starter. He's done a reasonable job maintaining his velocity over the past 4 years, although its nowhere near where it used to be. He's been maintaining ground ball rates and his HR/9 plummeted last year, which, if it isn't an aberration, is certainly a good sign. That his infield fly percentage shot up might be a good indication he has learned how to pitch up in the zone like Lester used to. He is, however, an unexciting addition. But the exciting ones are very expensive and probably not going to be worth it...

I get that. I was among those who didn't want to deal Blake Swihart for Cole Hamels (and his huge contract). And now Swihart is our backup catcher / utilityman, assuming he makes the team at all..

The most underrated of the bunch is probably Francisco Liriano, who has been worth 5.0 fWAR over the past 3 seasons (which is more Lance Lynn and more than double Alex Cobb in the same timeframe). However, Liriano is 34 years old and not likely improving much. Although his limited action last year (97 IP) might have helped some wear and tear on the arm. He also has a long history of control issues, and the Sox might not be too keen on another LHSP. Andrew Cashner (4.5 fWAR) and Jeremy Hellickson (4.4 fWAR) are RHSP options. Cashner is the only one of the three whose fWAR total isn't largely carried by one season...

That may not be too far out of line with the offers the Sox are receiving, which is why they still have Johnson...

SF likely wouldn't. No need for HanRam and it only saves them about $2.3mill per year AAV. And makes them a worse team...

It's always funny when people try to justify the new hype as being radically different from the old identical hype. It is a VAST understatement to say Montero was only considered a 1B/DH type, Yankee fans were spouting he was the next Miguel Cabrera on a vriety of message boards. He was a BA Top 10 prospect 3 times. There was a lot of "can't miss" in the hype. Of course, he did miss. By a lot. It was a really bizarre deal when he was dealt for Pineda, being a rarity that two young, controllable high profile players were swapped for each other. And Pineda was clearly the better get, but he was also - and apparently still is - a walking DL stint. He missed so much time it was difficult to keep track of how long he was with the Yankees. Torres might be great. But if he can't hit, he might end up as a utility infielder. Or, if you prefer, a utility infielder who could have gotten you Gerrit Cole...

Is that really any better than Musgrove, Feliz, Martin and Moran? Bear in mind, they reportedly liked Martin to some extent. I really doubt Deven Marrero would make a difference in any trade either way. (Yet I would keep him on the 25-man roster ahead of Holt.)

MLB-readiness is the new thing. Teams are apparently sick of getting burned by high upside A-ball guys who flame out before AA. I don't think Marrero or Lin really have anything in terms of trade value. Every team in MLB has good glove/no bat infielders rapidly running out of options. Really, there is nothing in that offer that looks more appealing than Colin Moran, and the best chance the Sox would have had would be to include Chavis. Even then, maybe Pittsburgh doesn't like him. But it's a safe bet no matter how they feel about him, they like him better than they like Marrero or Lin...

As would any team. But the weird thing is trying to guess the two all stars. The way Montero was being talked up, one would have thought he was an obvious choice back then. (And while Betances has been an All star closer, he as a starer considered less than Banuelos.) Similar to how Torres is being talked up this year. Cashman didn't hold Montero, and it arguably worked out, I guess. But he has been far more adamant about Torres despite one of the better GMs in the league already dealing him for a rental player...

Well, for starters because that package is vastly inferior. Musgrove (1.7 fWAR in 171 IP) to date has been less effective than ERod (5.0 fWAR in 366 IP), but has an extra year of control. Feliz has outperformed Hembree, albeit marginally. Both have similar control left. But that leaves Deven Marrero as a the counter-offering to both Colin Moran and Jerry Martin, who were both ranked in the top 13 of a better Astros system. The Pirates wouldn't take that offer if you held held Neal Huntington's kids for ransom. And Marrero has the added bonus of being out of options. He actually might be a good add over Jordy Mercer at SS, but players as good as Marrero will be available on the market for very cheap deals. If you replaced Marrero with Chavis and add a player like Cole Brannen or Bobby Dalbec, you're at least almost there...

Me neither. Although if I'm Peter Bourjos' agent, I'm calling right now. More likely they will try to move one of their contract players for another outfielder under contract. A trade of Mark Melancon (4 years $62mill) for Juan Lagares (4 years $23mill) would improve their OF and buy them some wiggle room, and actually make sense for both teams. They might also try to move Joe Panik someplace for a cheaper OF who is better than Jackson. (Panik to Mil for Keon Broxton?) But unless they can move Cueto or Samardzija, I don't see them in on Martinez...

I don't think they signed Jackson to start. He's the type of fourth outfielder the Sox should be looking for. (Although if I'm Austin Jackson, I sign with SF long before I think about Boston. Much easier outfield to get a starting job in.)

Of course if you flip over to the General Baseball Forum, you will see a thread titled "Baseball America Top 100" started by Jacksonianmarch some time ago. The first entry in that thread is about the Yankees having six of the top 100 prospects. Four of those six (Montero, Brackman, Banuelos, and Romine) were complete flops. Romine, a career backup catcher, has been the most successful of these four. A little perspective...
