  1. Unless there is an injury, there isn’t room for either of them...
  2. Juan Centeno, Oscar Hernandez and Austin Rei...
  3. The best former-player-turned-analytical-expert I can think of is Steve Stone, who was MLB’s equivalent of Tony Romo before Romo even started playing football...
  4. Burrell was a third baseman in college but moved from the position because the Phillies had Scott Rolen, who was the reigning NL ROY at the time. He was originally moved to 1b, but settled in the OF. His defensive abilities at third probably weren’t great, but were not the primary reason for moving him, especially since his bat was a fast track to MLB. Rolen was, after all, a defensive standout who was NOT going anywhere at the time...
  5. Yes. He could be one of those Sandy Rosario types everyone wants in the organization but no one wants on the 40 man roster, meaning a long stream of DFAs and claims...
  6. Well, there is a difference between Machado’s image being bad and not being as good as Harper’s. In fact, I re-looked at the marketability article and it was from 2016. Harper trailed only Kris Bryant, but that was also right after the Cubs won the World Series. He’s probably more marketable than Bryant right now. Machado does seem to be disliked by fans and Jesus Aguilar, but is he really so unpopular teams are avoiding him? It’s not like the other marquee free agents are falling into big deals left and right. Dallas Keuchel, for example, is still out there despite having a Cy Young award and no negative stigma whatsoever. Most likely the reason is simple Occam’s Razor - Machado wants more than anyone wants to pay and no one thinks he is as valuable as his agent does...
  7. Possibly because his ability to play OF seems to be more durable than Machado’s ability to play SS? Also, Harper certainly was more marketable than any MLB player in MLB except Kris Bryant. Harper’s Q score was second highest in MLB recently, ahead of Trout and Betts. There is a reason this guy does more commercials...
  8. Think it was his on-field antics and not just teams being reluctant to sign him through age 36 for a $30mill AAV? His career has been somewhat parallel to that of Evan Longoria, and Longoria has not been the same player since signing his 10 year contract...
  9. Well if you’re talking about 2016 when Dombrowski started to evince his live for Swihart 1) The tax hit for Castillo was not a problem in 2016. 2) While I agree Brentz is not MLB talent, Dombrowski keeps bringing this guy back. Last off-season, it seems as though many did disagree with me when Brentz was slated to be the fourth outfielder and I said this was not a good idea. 3) Swihart was the starting LF for every game from May20 to June 4 when he injured himself colliding with a wall. This wasn’t him being the versatile 25th man....
  10. But the Sox still had Bryce Brentz, Rusney Castillo, and even former MLB outfielders Brennan Boesch and Justin Maxwell that could have been called up instead. All of them were struggling with sub -.700 OPS’s in AAA, but the others all had outfield experience at the time...
  11. If the Sox wait until late in spring training to DFA Swihart and he does get claimed, it’s actually likely the claiming team will DFA him and try to sneak him through waivers. If so, the Sox can claim him back
  12. Oh Dombrowski definitely likes something abou Swihart. He’s been trying to force Blake into the lineup for a few years now...
  13. I think both are factors...
  14. Doesn't that seem odd to say about the one catcher the Soxhave who hasn't missed any significant time with injury? Leon was the team leader is games caught last year and in the past 3 years...
  15. 1) Tough call. His opinion might be more popular than you realize. Heck maybe he was quoting another closer himself. 2) Like Speier or not, dweeb or not, are any of our opinions - which this is a whole forum for - any better?
  16. Technically, it is optional in the AL. If a manager insists on letting his pitcher bat, that’s allowed. Just put your “DH” in the field after one (half) inning...
  17. It’s stupid. If you want to see your younger players, get them on the 25 man roster. If you have to release a couple guys and kickoff their free agency a month early, so be it...
  18. But bringing the DH to the NL doesn’t require any sort of realignment like inter league play justified. To justify realigning everything because there is a DH in the NL is just opportunism combined with “change for the sake of change”...
  19. Of course, by message board law, I did have to throw this back at you because I did once use player testimony that did not agree with your beliefs, so you in turn used some of his playing experiences to disqualify him as any type of expert. I’d say we both should know by now, Mark Wohlers knows more about closing games than either of us are even capable of learning...
  20. Well the Stang/Schwarzenegger thing made it appear to be an overall generality, even though it was also a funny joke about Arnold Stang and his physique...
  21. AL East, AL Central and AL West are NOT regional? Baseball started this process in 1961 and re-aligned again in 1994 and (in a limited fashion) again in 2013...
  22. This is very true. In fact almost all MLB managers are former major leaguers, and those who aren’t are former minor leaguers. Most of them are former catchers, for obvious reasons. But this actually doesn’t support your initial supposition that non-players don’t know the game...
  23. Now who’s moving the goal posts? You expressed a lack of faith in Speier as a baseball writer because he hadn’t played the game. That had nothing to do with being an MLB manager...
  24. I hate that idea, and I’m the guy railing against the pointless strategy of the LOOGY. How about 1) enforcing existing rules for pitching time between pitches and 2) stop the stupid practice of roster expansion, which gives teams 12-14 man bullpens for a full month? (I’m looking at you, Bruce Bochy.)
  25. While probably true for some CF, that becomes a bit subjective and impossible to prove, especially since it operates on the assumption everyone plays CF starting in the same spot...
