Huh? It’s not just about the dead money. It’s also about the active money. Also you left off Sandoval and his $17mill. The Red Sox remaining players still have a payroll of about $140mill. That’s more than enough to build a competitive team. That’s more than the payrolls of Tampa, Oakland, Minnesota, and Atlanta, all of whom probably also have some cash tied up in injured players as well. The Sox problem isn’t the “limited” payroll. Their problem is having no depth below their MLB payroll. Cleveland, for example, has a major ch lower payroll thanBoson and been without Kluber and Carrasco nearly all season and is still in a much better postseason position than Boston.,.

Even with the complete dearth of outfield depth in the Sox system, I never understood why they brought in Gorkys Hernandez. The only plausible reason is Pawtucket needed a warm body to actually play games. I would call up Cole Sturgeon before calling up Hernandez ...

I think this “rest day” is so overblown. The only teams with 3 players who have more games played this year than the Sox have gotten from Betts, Bogaerts and Devers are the Braves (Acuna, Freeman, Albies) and the Phillies (Harper, Hoskins, Hernandez). Theres actually a better argument that Cora isn’t resting his key players enough...

It is very parallel to Flat Earth theory. Despite the mountains of evidence, some people just believe the Sox farm system is as good as any other team’s because, well, they want to. The Sox farmsystem does suck. That doesn’t mean it has no Major Leaguers in it anywhere. But it does mean there are likely very few who will ever make an impact. But we can all sit back and hope we have the next Aristides Aquino...
