  1. I know what it is. But most of the players taken are NOT MLB-ready. So what it really is is a method of giving away a year of service time and development to a minor league player at the cost of a roster spot in hopes that it doesn’t burn you later. It’s really works best if teams just complete a trade for the player selected...
  2. Unless GMs view the 26th roster spot as an opportunity, I hope not. The Rule 5 draft is the dumbest way to acquire a player. The Sox have 6 open roster spots, but Bloom is an infrequent participant in the Rule 5 draft. I believe he’s only done it once...
  3. Obviously predicting a specific trade with all the names involved is difficult, even with only two teams. But I really don’t know if Lindor and Kluber are so readily available for a Cleveland team that won 93 games last year and could easily compete again. I look for Bloom to try and find one of those Tyler Glasgow type former top prospects who still has potential. One name I like there is Lewis Brinson in Miami. Maybe a simpler deal where the Sox send JD Martinez out to, say, the Rangers (after they fail to sign Rendon) who then send, say, Guzman to the Miami and Brinson comes to Boston and Betts stays. Sox then deal Bradley for a DH or 2b...
  4. 1) Exactly how does a "dollars to donuts" bet work? If I win, I get dollars, but if you win, you get donuts? 2) Really condifent that would bet that it's PROBABLY seperate. Exactly how do we determine a winner there? mvp: "Ok so they are not seperate, but I only bet that it was PROBABLE that they were." notin: "Oh darn. You win. Here's a donut." 3) The point of the joke being that that particular trade would cost LA a ton of money next year, close to $70mill, with another $64 mill on the books spread over the next 2 seasons. But would take the last 3 years of Pollock's contract away, valued at about $40mill total, plus one year of Pedereson at maybe $6mill-ish. So it would cost LA close to about $90 mill over the next 3 seasons...
  5. The Yankees and Mets have made 16 trades in MLB history. Granted, none were blockbusters, but so few trades are blockbusters. I think the biggest one might have been Justice for Ventura...
  6. But today's free agent ace is tomorrow's injured albatross...
  7. Except for the $3mill-ish minimum for the players 6 players who fill out the 40 man roster...
  8. Obviously. Everything has the death penalty in Texas, including parking violations.
  9. Yes, that was an implied possibility...
  10. Price, Betts, and Bradley for Pollock, Pederson and Stripling. Yes, it is acceptable on BTV. Probably less so with the Dodgers' Accounts Payable Department...
  11. Small fine in Illinois...
  12. Would Robot Joe West have made that call?
  13. That has to have assumptions about the salaries of Betts, Benintendi, Rodriguez, Barnes, Workman, and Hembree. They might end up under the limit if that collective group comes in $6mill under. That's actually only $1mill per on average...
  14. Dalbec to Texas for Nick Solak, assuming the Rangers cannot sign Rendon? BTV says this trade heavily favors the Rangers, so they can add something in. (Kolby Allard?)
  15. Possible, but then they might want Dalbec to get in some actual time at AAA. There is no rush with him. I actually don't like the idea of bringing up Dalbec to play 1B. He is cheap, and fits the budget. But 1B is typically much easier to fill and if he cannot hit LB pitching or struggles right out of the gate, what then? What if he is hitting .125 on May 1st? He's also one of their better pieces of trade bait, and might be better off being dealt for a 2b..
  16. Or that she was cast opposite Jimmy Fallon...
  17. Lin is a better defensive player. And he is capable of playing more positions, including SS. Plus Marco is no longer an internal option...
  18. If the Sox have the money, another really good external option might be Jonathan Schoop. Last year, he signed a one year deal for $7.5mill. He also played 2B with Bogaerts at SS on the Dutch National team...
  19. If the Sox have to fill 2B for less than $5mill, I have to wonder what the options are...
  20. As of right now, is Lin the starting 2b? IMO he is their best internal option, assuming Pedroia is a no-go...
  21. Walker is a guy I put into the same category as Danny Salazar. The Sox are coming off a year where SP injuries derailed the season. If your problem is SP injuries, Taijuan Walker is more likely to be part of the problem than part of the solution...
  22. OK. I am surprised, especially given the quality of the Sox middle infield and utility options. But I guess Cherington and Dombrowski thought more of Marco Hernandez than Bloom does, and this looks like a case of the roster spot being more valuable than the player...
  23. Eh. A $32mill salary is as good as a no-trade clause...
  24. Not sure what you're responding to here...
  25. Defensive metrics measure accomplishments, not ability, despite what many fans think. Bradley was among the top in innings for CF, but his chances, putouts, etc. were no commensurate with his innings played. Basically, he saw fewer opportunities per inning than a lot of other CF. So the rest got credit for making plays on opportunities while Bradley did not, and therefore his overall metrics suffered. His metrics were not a knock on his ability to play defense...
