I would defintely ay the Sox dealt a lot of prospects who were worth keeping, but in most cases, there was no other option if you wanted to get Sale, et al. But it is a fair discussion to bring up these prospects because there is a trade off when you make those deals. And maybe the trade off can be justified, but that doesn't mean it can be ignored...

I don’t think shedding Eovaldi’s contract is worthwhile. The amount of money the Sox would have to pay plus the amount to replace him with another pitcher is probably greater than his salary. Possibly by a lot. At first when you said “eat Pedroia’s contract,” I also thought you meant in some sort of trade. But I can see where you could also just mean that the Sox are stuck with it. Can you clarify?

But just comparing stats frequently allows people to lose some sense of scale. Batting average itself basically tells you everyone in the majors gets a hit between 20% and 30% of the time, and the ones who don’t are not far outside that range. ERA creates a larger misleading range, too. Sure a pitcher with a 3.50 ERA has been allowing runs at a greater pace than a pitcher with a 3.90 ERA. But how much greater? Four runs over 90 IP. Is that really a huge difference? It certainly gets treated like one by a lot of people. Heck, having a worse shortstop behind you can lead to a lot more than 4 earned runs over 90 IP...

JBJ currently makes $8.85 million. Absolutely no way he agrees to that offer. In fact, merely making that offer is all but a guarantee of paying JBJ higher. I get that you saying what he is worth. The only way the Sox pay him that amount is if they non-tender him first...

Easy to say now. Of course I’ve seen plenty of fans who say they would be willing to have the last place seasons inexchange for a World Series and be fine with it. But then if those last place seasons actually happen ... not so fine. I mean 15 years ago, most Sox fans wanted “just one title before I die.” Less than two years after an unprecedented third title in 2013, these same fans wanted the heads of Farrell and Cherington...

That’s because 1) it’s far cheaper to go to games and 2) there isn’t much else to do in most minor league cities. Seriously. Think of a city with a minor league baseball team. Now name one tourist attraction in that city...

Ok simply put - at what point is trading away the future justified? Simply saying “these players wouldn’t help now” does ignore the possibility that they might help next season...

Exactly. As it should be. My point was about MLB itself as compared to other professional sports leagues. Not fans (although I can’t pretend they have no influence either).

Attendance numbers have been in steady decline since 2007. MLB knew something had to be done to make the game more appealing to a broader demographic. But the success or failure of the Manfred Missile is hardly a make or break issue for the new CBA. Even if it comes up or not, there will be labor disputes; they’re always are. The owners and the MLBPA together are nothing more than a a few hundred people who cannot agree on how to divide up several billion dollars...
