  1. Well, there is that...
  2. Completely unrelated, but I always though this was fascinating JD Drew ages 31-34 with Boston: .270/.377/.476 (.853 OPS) Dwight Evans ages 31-34 with Boston: .266/.372/.477 (.850 OPS) Is it possible to find two more similar hitters at the same ages who played the same position for the same team for a four year stretch?
  3. No idea what else would have to be included, if anything. FWIW, baseballtradevalues.com gives Devers a trade value surplus of $129million and Soto a surplus value of $132million, meaning a 1 for 1 swap is actually close enough to equal. But Soto has that whole "World Series Hero" thing going on, and trading him away, even for Devers, would make Nats GM Mike Rizzo the second most unpopular man in DC...
  4. Of course he will. He’s 36 years old. He doesn’t need to be as good as the 2007 version of Pedroia. He just needs to be better than the 2020 versions of Marco Hernandez, Tzu-Wei Lin and Michael Chavis...
  5. Except that the Sox have better 3b prospects than OF prospects...
  6. Are we counting pinch-hitting appearances as a game played?
  7. Also, notin said that. Multiple times. On this board. And welcome back, mvp...
  8. Small list of players I would deal Devers for. But a Devers/Juan Soto deal would be nice. Nationals replace Rendon and the Red Sox replace Betts (assuming he is getting dealt, of course)
  9. Just so you know, he does like you
  10. No, but you made comments about snitches and player code being a real thing...
  11. Well, having 6 years of MLB experience at an age where the majority of the league has less than 3 is worth something. Edgar Martinez is a deserving Hall of Famer in the eyes of many, but he didn't get even 200 plate appearances in a single season until he was older than Machado and Harper were when they became free agents. If Machado and/or Harper have careers from age 27 forward like Martinez did, we might feel differently about how overvalued they were...
  12. Tomase wrote an article about Lackey before the surgery and missed season about how loved he was by all his teammates. He was just an intense competitor on the field. There are scores pf pitchers like him. Brad "The Animal" Lesley was nothing but a blip in MLB history, but his reputation for being animated and shouting all over the field was so well known, it landed him a role in the movie "Little Big League" where he played a fictional version of himself...
  13. So you don't like Kershaw, who, along with teammate Scott Van Slyke, publicly aired gripes about Yasiel Puig? What about Larry Bigbie, who voluntarily ended his own career by naming names in the Mitchell Report? What he did was actually probably good for baseball, and it was a total case of self-sacrifice. Is he a villain too?
  14. It also turns out more of the ire from fans directed at Lackey was possibly influenced by his poor performance the first 2 seasons. A player can get away with more in our eyes if he is actually producing. No one disliked Orlando Cabrera when he stepped in and helped salvage the 2004 season, but the man has a litany of stories around him centered around being an extremely selfish player and a terrible teammate...
  15. True, but so did the deals for Machado and Harper last year, but I doubt wither one holds up as well..
  16. I think the logic behind any long deal is a team is paying for the production of the early years. I don’t think the Reds and Tigers expect Votto and Cabrera to be contributors earning their salary at age 40. I think that’s the logic behind the backloading of long term deals we used to see all the time. Pay the player less when he’s good so the team can afford a better supporting cast. Deals like ARod (first deal with Texas) and Manny Ramirez - where the player was good for the entire span of the long term deal - are incredibly rare...
  17. I really doubt the 75 year old LaRussa “needs” to keep working. He’s a lawyer with nearly half a century of experience in various MLB roles. There’s going to be food on the table for the rest of his life. I just think he wants to stay involved in MLB and has the name and prolonged history to make it happen. He must bring something to the table at this point. But yeah, being Tony LaRussa definitely helps a lot...
  18. Yes Rickey did decline as he got older But it was expected since he was one of the greatest offensive players in MLB history. Everyone declines as they age. Betts will too. But that doesn’t mean he is going to be a non-contributing player. Just like Rickey wasn’t...
  19. I’m glad I’m not the only one who didn’t know what MLB’s Biggest Egomaniac brought to the table...
  20. Well, yeah. First step in the hiring process is needing a new job...
  21. Well, he keeps getting hired...
  22. Gennett sort of exploded into relevance and faded away just as quickly. Sogard is a journeyman utility infielder. I’m not sure how much of an upgrade either is over Chavis at the plate...
  23. I was never a fan of his ever. But the man does keep working...
  24. No he didn’t die. He got hired by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in basically the same capacity he worked in Boston https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/11/angels-hire-tony-la-russa-senior-advisor.html
  25. None of that really says anything. Even when those pictures of McGwire from his rookie year of 1989 and then his 1999 picture were juxtaposed with each other really wasnt proof. A lot can happen in a full 10 years. There are reasons to be suspicious, maybe. But that's the best there is, and the random circumstantial accusations of steroid abuse get legs quickly and have had very negative effects on the legacies of some innocent players...
