  1. Who did the Dodgers add? And, no, Billy McKinney does not count…
  2. The White Sox are far scarier than the Astros. They’ve been dominating the AL Central without arguably their two best hitters. One just came back and the other is expected back soon…
  3. … which means he wasn’t a rental?
  4. Wasn’t that exactly my point?
  5. Boyd was unranked. That he has worked out better than the flop Norris is inconsequential for this discussion. If the Sox traded Jeter Downs and Jon Arauz for Scherzer, it is theoretically possible Arauz could become an All Star and Downs never got out of AAA. But the more valuable piece at the time will always be Downs…
  6. Not Machado? Not a pitcher but absolutely a top tier addition who does have Hall of Fame potential himself…
  7. The Astros added RHP Kendall Graveman to their pen. The Dodgers haven’t been any more active than the Red Sox so far. The big movers to date are the Rays, who been buying, selling and renting, and the Padres and Mets…
  8. We could argue about whether or not a player is “Scherzer level”, but certainly renting Manny Machado in 2018 cost nothing, unless you’re a big fan of Dean Kramer. Machado was certainly an elite player, although not a pitcher. In 2015, the cost of renting David Price did involve a highly ranked Daniel Norris. Whether or not you think Price’s significantly younger age at the time was a factor is debatable. Obviously extending 30 year old Price felt like a smarter move than extending 37yo Scherzer will be, but I don’t know if Toronto ever even considered it a possibility or just viewed him as a straight up rental…
  9. Maybe, but even those deals are very uncommon. Can you think of any other deals where a team dropped a top 100 prospect for a rental?
  10. Not sure what the Nats want for Scherzer, and yes he will probably be worth more than his BTV value, mostly based on how many teams get involved. But no team is breaking the bank for him and unloading their top prospects. If Scherzer returns a top 100 prospect, it will probably be somebody ranked below 70 and that piece is probably the only one going back. He’s not going to be cheap, but other teams are not going to jeopardize their future for 2 months of him, either…
  11. It also comes down to what other teams need Rizzo. Any other contenders that one thinks could be looking for a 1b or DH?
  12. Per BTV, a Rizzo-Dalbec swap is fair…
  13. Another versatile name to consider is Asdrubal Cabrera. One year dirt cheap contract makes him an inexpensive rental who can still handle 1b, 2b and 3b. His .701 OPS vs RHP isn’t much but is still an upgrade over Dalbec…
  14. Am I the only one who found it surprising that Trevor Williams, Matt Moore and Jose Urena got MLB contracts and Porcello didn’t even get a minor league deal? I’m sure money was a factor at some point. But Matt Moore?
  15. I would imagine Jonathan Schoop is also on the radar. Especially if Arroyo is expected to be out for a prolonged stretch. Schoop has plenty of experienced at 2b as well as 1b and that versatility does seem to fit in with a lot of Bloom’s acquisitions this season…
  16. They've been moving the value of Castillo down for a while now. Less than 1 eyar ago, it was over 100. I imagine if we look back a year from now, Alcantara and Sanchez will be reaching much higher values as they develop and get better. Berrios has just one year left after this season, while Castillo has two...
  17. I wouldn't call it unlikely. Heck, even Mike Trout went back down for a while after his first call up. If it's only for 2 to 3 weeks, it would help avoid a crunch on the roster...
  18. Possibly, although a new 1B could also contribute. Especially if they get a LHH platoon partner for Dalbec. It also doesn't help Duran that Cordero has been hitting better these last few games...
  19. Actually it’s very possible Duran returns to Worcester for a big chunk of August…
  20. I do think people overplay the “division rival” card. It actually makes more sense for teams like Baltimore to build their farm system by deleting the system of the Sox simultaneously. But Mancini is some sort of cult hero among Orioles’ fans. Not sure why. He’s good but he’s not great. He did have that whole cancer episode, which might be why. But for whatever reason, he’s not coming to Boston. Which is unfortunate…
  21. I don’t think Denny will be happy until the only baseball stats people discuss are batting average, ERA and saves. I’m 90% certain he’s written his congressman to have laws passed banning OPS, FIP, fWAR and UZR…
  22. Let’s get Gallo and Marte. Both Marte’s!!!
  23. Some people suffer from them for decades…
  24. I’d be happy if Bloom got Gray.
