  1. Well, “afford” in baseball often means “doesn’t want to pay.” ..
  2. Impressive players, but I think a lot of teams can find 5 equally impressive players dealt away in a 50 year stretch…
  3. The price is higher if injuries set in….
  4. And why is “5 tool guys” so important? I’d take Tony Gwynn over Shaun Green every opportunity…
  5. Bagwell, too, since he only mentioned organization and made no reference to playing in Boston…
  6. And why Fred Lynn in the first place? Do people think Lynn was better than Betts?
  7. No one will give Rodon anywhere near $200 million. The guy is a walking Injured List. He has 230 IP in the previous 4 years combined. If you want to argue his current performance will lead to a massive overpayment, that’s one thing. But his health issues will hold him back. Eovaldi was under 30 when he reached free agency and a World Series hero to boot and he didn’t come anywhere near $200 mill. Or even $100mill…
  8. Are the Sox facing any pitchers who throw beach balls?
  9. The Sox just spent 2 1/2 years making Duran learn the OF. Not likely they switch him back to IF so quickly. Especially if they moved him off 2b in the first place because they didn’t like his defense there…
  10. . Schiraldi was actually very effective in the role…
  11. It’s one thing to suggest it on an innocuous message board. We get 5 sillier ideas before breakfast. (I’m good for two of them.) But if the Sox actually attempted it, I’d lose all faith in Cora and Bloom…
  12. No it wasn’t. Schiraldi took over the role after Stanley and Sambito faltered…
  13. So no 1b? My point stands…
  14. Schiraldi had fewer IP because he assumed the role later on the year, but his 299 ERA+ wasn’t good enough? That’s better than Foulke had! I fear you might be entering the Realm of Circular Logic. The Sox won because they had a great closer! And the closer was great because they won!!
  15. If his defensive learning curve was one reason for delaying his promotion, it would be unfathomably stupid to just thrust him into another completely new position…
  16. Calvin Schiraldi (1986) and Byung-Hyun Kim (2003) both were very good closers…
  17. Technically we were establishing why you don’t apply fWAR limits for position players to relief pitchers. But summing up 4 time Gold Glive winner Gaetti by his batting average feels right. It would be like calling Rivera “a failed starter”…
  18. Duran might only be up until someone returns from IL…
  19. The Braves acquired Joc Pederson from the Cubs. Pederson was one guy I completely overlooked as a potential LHH platoon partner for Dalbec. (Pederson has 149 career innings at 1b. Not ideal, but it’s something.).
  20. This team has only 3 hits in the past 4 days!! Talk about a team slump!!
  21. The thing is, the guy most likely to platoon with Dalbec is Marwin…
  22. Gaetti, but bear in mind closers rarely get deals over 4 years…
  23. But iortiz was applying the fWAR standards for position players to a reliever to minimize Barnes' role on the team. If you use Barnes fWAR that way, you are basically saying Rivera = Gaetti, as their careers were virtually identical with regards to fWAR...
  24. Or 1990 Minnesota Gaetti, when he came to Fenway and became the only player in MLB history to start two triple plays in one game...
  25. Even if you're a fan of closers, they're not where you start building a team. They're like the dessert of your pitching staff. You need a team/dinner in front of them before you can enjoy them...
