  1. Keep in mind that Rivera's numbers encompassed the peak of the steroid era, Papelbon's a little less so. Kimbrel is pitching in a lower OPS era.
  2. Amazed that happened with Boras as his agent. Obviously Strasburg likes playing in Washington and was willing to forgo some $ to stay there. Good for him.
  3. Only thing to hope for is a repeat of last game when he gave up 2 in the first and nothing after that.
  4. I would make a quick to the mound and tell Mr. Buchholz that you are going 6 innings tonight. That can be 18 pitches or 218, up to you.
  5. In a word, no, Trout is not a realistic option at this time.
  6. There are some big differences though. Betts started 2014 in AA, not A. Betts was called up to a last place team. Betts also benefited greatly by the total ineptitude of Sox outfielders that year: JBJ imploded, Victorino was hurt most of the year, Gomes was traded and really didn't do much before he was, Nava was terrible the first half. There is not a comparable situation in Boston this season. No need to rush the kid. Yes, if he keeps raking at Salem he'll be in Portland before the end of the year, but that will probably be it. He appears to be a keeper, but let's not ascribe Trout/Harper fly through the levels type talent to him.
  7. True. My take on Drew is that he was/is an extreme introvert. He wanted to do his job and go home. He didn't want to deal with the press on either good days or bad ones. He didn't wear his emotions on his sleeve ala David Ortiz, and so he appeared not to care. But it takes all types to make a team, 25 guys with personalities like Ortiz would not work and neither would 25 Drews. Many years ago, the Sox had another outfielder who, if given his druthers, would have done the same thing, and was also accused at times of not caring. He had the nickname of Yaz.
  8. Slash, people don't undergo shoulder surgery for a "phantom" injury and any doctor that would perform one would be guilty of malpractice. A guy like Dr. Andrews is certainly not going to put his or his practice's reputation on the line for that.
  9. The immortal Sean O'Sullivan? It appears from his games for Pawtucket that he at least throws the ball over the plate (5BB in 33 IP), which is more than could be said of one Henry Owens. Whether or not that's a good thing remains to be seen, although in theory the defense would have a chance to make a play.
  10. Or maybe pitchers could learn to pitch more than 1 batter or inning at a time, so that 12 and 13 man pitching staffs aren't required.
  11. Sure he can, but that means Young is in left, and it seems like a lot here just want to be rid of him already. And one of Holt's hits was that 45 foot frozen rope off Jennings last night. So going into that AB, he was hitting .222 off of lefties. Two ways to take it; either non of them can hit lefties this season or it's way too soon to tell. I'm opting for the latter. (The Shaw stats are interesting in light of virtually everyone trashing Farrell ph Young for him early on.)
  12. vs. LHP Young .250/.368/.500/.868 (4-16) 4K Holt .300/.462/.300/.762 (3-10) 3K Shaw .083/.120/.125/.245 (2-24) 8K 2 of the 3 are going to play when a lefty starts, unless Rutledge worms his way into more PT
  13. Henry "Houdini" Owens
  14. White Sox announcers just cited a baseball first tonight. Coupled with the Nationals-Cubs game at Wrigley, this is the first time ever that four first place teams have been playing in the same city at the same time. Have to admit it's nice not having Harrelson on the broadcasts Tuesday and tonight.
  15. Nothing wrong with that trade. Boddicker was very effective with Boston, going 39-22 with an ERA of around 3.50 and helping the Sox to 2 division titles. Schilling didn't even become a full time starting pitcher until 1993 (5 years after the trade), and Anderson was a decent outfielder, but other than 1 over the top year, was hardly a diffeence maker.
  16. Baseball Reference has it at $6.5M for both years. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/y/youngch04.shtml#contracts
  17. I've heard that as well, and it's absolutely sick. That surgery costs in the area of $20,000 and since in these cases it's elective, that's out of pocket. That's a year of college at many places. Another dirty little secret is that division 1 scholarships are limited to 11.7 per team. That covers 4 years worth of players, so a) almost no one gets a full ride (in some cases, you might get your books covered) and even if you do, scholarships are year to year, so even if you get a full ride year 1, odds are you aren't getting one after that because it will be needed to lure another frosh. In other words, you are going to lay out big $ anyway. Division 2 schools are allowed 9 per team and Division 3 don't give "athletic" scholarships. You want $ for college? Hit the books.
  18. Close. More like: 1. Babe Ruth 2. Bagwell for Anderson, although Lyle for Cater is certainly in the same ballpark.
  19. 63 might be the average temp but the reality in Chicago now and tonight is overcast, temps in the upper 40s and winds at around 15 mph; I'm guessing that translates to windchills in the 30s. In other words, miserable.
  20. Given the historical excellence of the position, it's hard to believe that LF has become somewhat of an offensive black hole for the Red Sox.
  21. Well, there is Castillo's stellar line of .253/.288/.359/.647 in 80 games and 289 PAs last year. He also struck out 1 out every 5 PAs and murdered multiple worms while grounding into 11 DPs.
  22. 1) Do we even know if Swihart can play the OF? The factual answer is no, we don't. The majors is not the place to be learning that on the fly, or did the Hanley experiment last year teach you nothing. 2) Hanigan's job on this team is back-up catcher. Right now, he's catching Wright (no easy task), babysitting Owens (and Kelly before that) and mentoring Vazquez. Swihart has enough catching issues without having to worry about trying to catch Wright's knuckler and trying to learn a new position. Oh, and he's hitting all of .230 at Pawtucket. Would he hit better than Hanigan? Yeah, but a catcher's job is handling the pitching staff and defense first.
  23. Very likely. When I was a kid, I read a book on Tom Seaver. In it, Seaver recounts the first time he faced Hank Aaron. He got Aaron to hit into a double play on an inside fastball. Paraphrasing Seaver, "That's it, that his weakness." Next time up Seaver threw an inside fastball again and Aaron chalked one up on his way to 755. Seaver said he learned from that that good hitters think too, and what Aaron was thinking was "Kid pitcher, got me to into that DP last time up on an inside fastball, bet he comes with it again"
  24. Winston Smith is still holding down his gig at ESPN, editing video and erasing unpersons. In other news, Eurasia and Oceania have always skipped game 6 of a 7 game series.
  25. Which would be wrong: 1 ph for Shaw, Holt stayed in 2 ph for Shaw, Holt stayed in 3 started, Holt DNP 4 ph for Shaw, Holt stayed in 5 ph for Shaw, Holt stayed in 6 started, Holt DNP 7 started, Holt DNP 8 started, Holt DNP 9 ph for Bogaerts, Holt stayed in 10 ph for Bradley, Holt played all 9 innings on defense (Rutledge ph for him in 9th) 11 ran for Bogaerts, Holt stayed in 12 started, Holt played ss 13 ph for Price, Holt replaced in double switch 14 ph for Betts, Holt stayed in
