    Per Baseball Almanac, it the 4th time and ties the record. First time it's been done in 11 innings (the others took 20, 18 and 12 innings). It probably won't count, but the record for strikeouts in 9 innings is 20. That's been done 5 times individually and once as a team. Sox pitchers had 21 Ks tonight thru 9 innings.

    Plus high school state titles his last 2 years at that level. One of his high school teammates was Frank Robinson.

    I Thanks, knew it was something like that. For the youngsters, examples from the Year of the Pitcher: Yaz won the AL batting title with a .301 average. The second place guy hit .290. Denny McLain won 31 games for the Tigers. Bob Gibson went 22-9 with a 1.12 ERA for the Cardinals. I’ve still never figured out how he lost 9 games that year. The All-Star game was 1-0on an unearned run. They lowered the mound from 15 inches to inches after that season and offense went up quite a bit in 1969.

    I do remember George Scott hitting something like .175 one year; I want to say it was 1968.

    As a retirement/Christmas present, my son got me tickets to Saturday’s game. I fly to Boston Friday while he travels up from Atlanta. First trip to Fenway in nearly 30 years.

    Yeah, I saw that but I’m wasn’t sure if monkey meat would be a tasty addition to the smorgasbord. Edit - I guess gibbons are actually apes, so I really don’t know if they are edible.

    Had he maintained the numbers he put up in Boston, he would have been in HOF conversation. He didn’t once he left and I agree, he really wasn’t that close all things considered.

    JBJ is a better defender than Lynn was (and Lynn was good). Lynn was obviously the better all-around player.

    Yep, and the operative word is pitcher. Too many "fans" assume that every player on a lousy team sucks. They don't. The ultimate example I ever saw was Steve Carlton and the 1972 Phillies. For you youngsters, the 72 Phillies were 59-97 that strike shortened season; Carlton went 27-10 for them.

    My local minor league team, the Quad City River Bandits (Class A affiliate for the Astros) has been on the road for virtually the entire season since the Midwest League kicked things off on April 1. Modern Woodman Park is located in Davenport, IA on the banks of the Mississippi River, which has been flooding since late March. The field itself is dry, but the stadium is surrounded by water and no one can get to the park. The team had constructed a pedestrian bridge before the season to get over the water, but the railroad decided that that would be a good time to raise the tracks that pass by the park (didn't bother telling anyone) and would not allow use of the bridge. The team had to play "home" games in other cities for most of April. Finally last Friday, they were able to play a game at home and then a twin-bill on Sunday. Yesterday, a temporary levee was breached, sending more water into the area; the bridge is now under water and the team has been forced to move more series to other parks. I've seen a lot of players comes through here over the years; Correa and Bregman are among the recent .

    3 runs in 2 games isn't a recipe for wins, even if you had vintage Koufax and vintage Pedro on the hill.

    It is but if they turn a DP in that situation (just a guy on 1st) it’s because the batter didn’t bother to run. It’s designed to prevent an easy DP because the runners on 1st and 2nd (and 3rd if applicable) have to hang around the base due to the pop up.

    Moreland is what he is; a guy who should be hitting 6-7 in the line-up. He should not be hitting 3rd consistently. He’s also at his best when he’s not playing every day.
