  1. What does what you call bad baseball actually cause? If bad baseball is what wins the division then I guess bad baseball is a great strategy. Or maybe bad baseball is a subjective assessment.
  2. It doesn't really work that way.
  3. My injury concerns about Hanley started when they signed him and I see no reason to change my view. It was a very bad signing due to the contact length and amount. Sometimes you have to cut your losses, no matter how big. If there is any possibility of trading him I am all for that.
  4. If bad baseball doesn't stop the team from winning it is not a concern. Or it could be that those who claim they observed bad baseball did not see as much of it as they thought. Or some combination of both.
  5. I think where the defense really needs improvement is the left side of the infield. 3b was particularly terrible and has not even improved with Devers who at least can hit.
  6. Yup, that's ok with me as long as it balances out and a winning record is the result.
  7. Is it smart with one out?
  8. So is he a problem defensively? Or do his good plays balance out his bad plays? Average would suggest they do. If he had too many gaffs he should come out with a negative rating.
  9. Maybe they should start relievers and let the starters relieve.
  10. Hanley will most likely be playing hurt for the rest of his career. That is the reason to cut him.
  11. No. Is Beni an overall negative on defense?
  12. So if sloppy baseball can win the division why do fundamentals matter? Baseball must be a very random sport.
  13. Nope. I'm against the aggressive base running philosophy. I question that massive amounts of boneheaded plays occurred. And if the evidence is presented for massive amounts of boneheaded plays being made it must also then be demonstrated how many wins it cost the team.

  15. It is all part and parcel of Farrel's aggressive base running philosophy which he accepts as the price you pay to get a net positive result.
  16. Farrell defends and espouses aggressive base running despite the occasional goof up it may cause because he sees the net result as positive. I don't agree with this philosophy. But it will always occur as long as Farrell is manager.
  17. Not in those cases. Except Pedroia did run into the third out which maybe killed a potentially bigger inning. But the Astros are a much better team right now. Earlier in the regular season, the Sox had a better chance against them.
  18. It isn't a rationalization. If the problem is as bad as you make it out, yet the team still wins, maybe you are incorrect in your assessment of the severity of the problem. They play to win games, not earn style points. In sports, won/loss record is the bottom line. They are not being swept in the playoffs because they were occasionally sloppy during the regular season. One has nothing to do with the other.
  19. The bad baserunning is an artifact of Farrell's philosophy. Farrell has publicly defended it. It's ok to pick on Beni. It is his first full season and coaching and fellow players input can help him improve. He doesn't strike me as a dumb player unwilling to learn. But don't forget the great plays and runs saved by him as well. Is Beni a net negative or positive defensively? And what is the estimate of games lost due to boneheaded plays? It wasn't enough to keep them out of first place despite Moon's claim that there were a massive amount of them. Something doesn't add up here.
  20. And Farrell defended some of those. Nothing will ever change in that regard because Farrell chalks it up to the price of aggressiveness and believes it always comes out on the positive side of the ledger on balance. I ask how much potential scoring was squandered by OOB.
  21. The Red Sox were and still are a very good regular season team, but the regular season seems to take the best out of them and leave very little for the postseason. On paper, the Sox really are only the 4th best team left in the AL playoffs.
  22. Put it down to boneheaded hitting.
  23. I'm only asking for a handful of examples. I'd be more dumb to believe claims for which no solid evidence has been presented.
  24. So from that my guess is the team must have had a high stolen base success rate. Is there anything calculated about potential runs lost by running into outs on the bases?
  25. I understand that, but carrying Hanley really hampers improving the team. The Sox organization will not be put out of business financially by cutting Hanley. Take the hit and move on. Hanley adds no value to the team . Pedroia's situation is much more difficult. There is still good value left in him unless his health has crossed the point of no return , which I believe that Hanley's has.
