  1. Shaw was a marginal prospect who we got more out of than we had any right to expect, but it's quite possible we sold him at his highest value...and basically replaced his expected production with Moreland. The only guy I think we might miss is Dubon, and he'd probably never be more than a utility infielder in Boston.
  2. Well, we have to be concerned with it because the team's ability/willingness to spend is finite and the luxury tax threshold is something they pay attention to...like it or not, but that is just a fact. Giving a big contract to Player A means you have less of the pie to allocate for Players B, C, and D that you may also want down the line. It will be interesting to see what people say if we're not able to keep all of the B's or enter the bidding for someone like Otani in a year or two because of some of the other contracts we have on the books.
  3. I usually err on the side of building from within and will readily admit my prospect-hugging tendencies, but the more I think about this deal, the more I like it. Probably my favorite Dombrowski trade yet, in fact. The cost was steep, to be sure, but justified, and if anything it could have been even more. I don't feel as if we've sold out the future, but rather upgraded both the present and the near-future significantly by drawing from a position of depth. (I don't think you make this trade unless you have confidence that Pablo can be the short-term and Devers the long-term answer at 3B.) Yes, it sucks to see the farm all but emptied out, but having almost every position and the entire rotation set for the next 2-3 years at minimum will give us plenty of time to replenish it...and in the meantime, we get to watch what should be a very, very good major league team, which is really the whole point. I'm happy with that.
  4. I don't know if I'll ever get used to the cost being exacted for relief pitchers right now, but it's simply the reality of the market currently. Much as I haven't been a fan of the Kimbrel deal, it looks a lot better after some of the trades at this year's deadline and what Melancon/Jansen/Chapman are getting or will get in free agency. Hell, the Gagne trade will probably look a lot better soon at this rate. DD got 3 years of a potentially elite setup man without sacrificing any top prospects or core major league pieces. I find that difficult to argue with.
  5. Hopefully we can get something good for Buch, not just a salary dump...though even with the pitching market being what it is, I'm not confident of that.
  6. The gift that keeps on giving.
  7. I've let the people who liked the Pomeranz deal more than I did talk me into believing in Pomeranz's upside as a starter, so yeah, moving him back to the pen would be a bit of a letdown. Of course you do it if it's what's best for the team, but it certainly won't make the original trade look any better.
  8. People really think we traded Espinoza for Pomeranz just so we could put him in the bullpen, though? Would not surprise me to see him or Buchholz shipped out now and possibly Wright to the bullpen in the swingman role he was intended to fill last year.
  9. I was just thinking to myself earlier that if we could do it for Moncada and some lesser pieces, I'd be pretty tempted, but every rumor or estimate seemed to include guys like Bradley, Rodriguez, etc., which would have felt like robbing Peter to pay Paul to me. They are obviously putting a lot of eggs in the Sandoval (2017 3B), Devers (3B of the future), and Groome (last SP prospect of note) baskets, but man does our roster look stacked now.
  10. I was kind of scared beforehand, but seeing what we gave up, I'm...strangely okay with this. Sucks to lose Moncada, and I still think we need a big bat more than another SP, but to land Sale while keeping Betts, Bogaerts, Benintendi, Bradley Rodriguez, Devers, Swihart, and Groome is rather stunning.
  11. Bob Nightengale ‏The #WhiteSox will also acquire Basabe and V. Diaz from #RedSox
  12. I really hope it's not Devers, but we'll see. (Edit: or Groome.) On the other hand, if we managed to do this without including Bradley or Rodriguez, then wow.
  13. Holy s***. Depends who the other two are, really...
  14. Ken Rosenthal Sources: #RedSox remain strongly in mix for #WhiteSox’s Sale, along with #Nationals. Ken Rosenthal Multiple sources now saying that #RedSox have built momentum toward a deal with #WhiteSox for Sale. Well, s***...
  15. Nice deal, IMO. One could argue we gave up a bit much, but good relief pitching will cost you, and Thornburg was really, really good this year. I don't think we gave up anything we'll miss too terribly.
  16. Ken Rosenthal Verified account ‏Source confirms: #RedSox strongly in mix for Mitch Moreland. First reported: @JeffWilson_FWST.
  17. Jon Heyman ‏@JonHeyman Nats are said to stepping for Sale. Meeting this aft. Red Sox are involved, and others, too.
  18. I'm starting to think we don't see any major move for a bat (an Alvarez/Young platoon, or something along those lines, wouldn't be the worst thing in the world) and find our reliever(s) on the trade market (which makes me nervous).
  19. I think all this tells us is that Swanson/Turner were more ready for the major leagues last year than Moncada was, which is not exactly earth-shattering news. You can't draw any conclusions about Moncada's ceiling (which is extremely high based on just about every report I've ever read) from 19 plate appearances. Moncada is a consensus top 5 prospect in the game, possibly #1 overall. If you'd prefer Swanson or Turner for your 2017 team, that's fine and I won't argue with you, but to say their trade value is "not even close" is a joke.
  20. Get ready for next offseason's crazy bidding war: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/12/nippon-ham-fighters-planning-to-post-shohei-otani-after-2017-season.html?fv-home=true&post-id=79147
  21. Yup...these Sale proposals are nuts. The rotation just isn't a big enough need for me to justify the insane cost.
  22. I doubt this would have been a sticking point for the Red Sox. My point is that if they weren't willing to go to 1/16, they couldn't have wanted him terribly badly to begin with.
  23. $16 mil for 1 year seems extremely reasonable, so I can't imagine this was a matter of us wanting him badly but getting outbid. Makes me wonder what else Dombrowski has up his sleeve...
  24. I think we all should have learned this lesson in 2014 with the great expectations heaped upon Bogaerts and Bradley at the outset of their careers (which they have since justified), and their subsequent stumbles. I have very high hopes for Benintendi, but seeing him struggle at some point next year would hardly be shocking -- nor cause for panic and overreaction if it does happen.
