  1. If that is really the plan- not only avoiding replacing Gio & Pivetta, but not adding anyone at all, then the sham is greater than I ever imagined. There would be open revolt, and it would be staggering in numbers.
  2. I think we all agree on this. It seems like a no brainer to try and buy one to improve the odds on having 1-2 that step up as stoppers. We seem to be loaded with decent 3-5 slot SP'ers...maybe even too many. It's so clear we need 1's and 2's.
  3. I really don't think the plan is to keep lowering the payroll, but who knows? I'd like to see us extend Pivetta. I'm not sure the plan is to have this year's SP'ers fill all 5 slots in 2025. It might be more about finding out which 3-4 will be run back in '25, as we replace Gio and add 1-2 more. It does look pretty nice to have just about every one of the everyday positions covered for the next 5 years, unless someone really flops. Even then, we seem to have 2 at each slot with promise.
  4. He's always had the right stuff to be a SP'er. It's been about health and durability. Hopefully, the conditioning upgrade will be a big factor. It's a reason for hope, for sure.
  5. Yes, HS and college W-L records should be the first thing scouts and analysts look at.
  6. I think this might be oversimplifying what conclusions they came to. I think velocity and movement have always been important factors in evaluating pitcher value. I think they realized, we had been undervaluing velocity, in recent years, and determined it needed to be moved up on the list of several factors. I happen to agree.
  7. Indeed. The idea is that analytics might slightly improve the odds on making the right choices on roster decisions, over just using scouts and rudimentary stats.
  8. It depends on Rafaela being on the 26 or 40, but here is my order... SS Story Reyes (or Grissom w Reyes at 2B) (Rafaela if on 26 and as an emergency fill-in) DHam is on the 40. Sogard & Koss are not. 2B Grissom Reyes (Rafaela if on 26 and as emergency fill-in) EValdez DHam is on the 40. Sogard is not. Yorke, Romy Gonzalez or Westbrook might get added to the 40, if Grissom stays on the IL, long- term.
  9. Of course, looking good in ST'ing does not mean it transfers to the regular season, but I have to think it's better than looking bad. That being said, this is early ST'ing, so more AAA type players are playing, so success must be taken with a grain of salt.
  10. I think the FO is determined to use this season as the one where we find out which of our pitchers can be counted on as SP'ers, going forward. It makes some sense for a "punt season," and this might be one reason why they don't want a guy like Monty starting 32 games and going 180 IP. It would cut into their experiment. A rotation slot is Bello's to lose, this year. Pivetta is a FA, after this year, but he seems like a lock on one slot, as is Gio. That's 3 slots taken. The other two will be used to try and find out, if we have any keepers for the future rotation. Crawford should get the inside shot at winning one. Houck and Whitlock look to have the best chance to win the 5th slot, but the "stretching out" of Wink puts a squeeze on opportunities, unless there is an injury, of someone fails miserably, early on in 2024 and is replaced. The FO sees the team as having 7 guys for 5 SP slots. Many of us disagree with this approach, but it seems to be what it will be.
  11. Yes, everyone is "doing analytics" to some extent. Now, we need to do it better than almost everyone else. It's not like the players we've identified to acquire have all sucked. One main problem is we failed to sign some of the better ones- like resigning Nate or outbidding the Rays for Eflin. Then, there are the near misses on Abreu and others that makes you wonder just how good our guys are.
  12. Certainly, that is the major aspect of the "line-up" line, but also it's about timing, and to me it's an admission that the timing is not now, because we are in a "rebuild" or are "punting," at this moment. It's all semantics, of course, but that statement seems more truthful and on point than others before it.
  13. I doubt it. Maybe EValdez or DHam.
  14. Speaking of 40 Man Roster seniority... 1. Devers (added in summer of '17 from minors) 2. Dalbec (added NOV '19 to avoid Rule 5) 3. Pivetta (trade 8/21/20) 4. Houck (added 9/15/20 when called up) 5. Mata (added NOV '20 to avoid Rule 5) 6. Wong (added NOV '20 to avoid Rule 5- traded for, earlier) 7. Whitlock (selected in Rule 5 DEC '20) Everyone else was added after Duran in July '21. Notes: Mata is the only player in the top 28 in seniority on the 40 man roster to not play in MLB, yet. (Wikelman & Perales are #29 & 30th.) Slaten at #33 is the only other. Pretty amazing how 38 players were not on the 40 Man Roster before the 2020 trade deadline. 36 players were added after the 2020 season to today. (That's 3.5 years.) 27 players were added at the 2022 trading deadline or later. 24 were added after the 2022 season. 12 have been added after the 2023 season. (Bernardino, Reyes & Jacques during the '23 season)
  15. Yup. 8 years in the system (amazingly 5th in 40 man roster seniority,) and has never pitched in the bigs. Never pitched more than 105 IP. 425 IP in 6 seasons as a SP. (Missed 2020 & 2021, totally) 9.3 K/9 4.7 B/9 Maybe someday, he'll find himself.
  16. Me? Devers (1.783 OPS), Whitlock (8K 0BB) and Houck (1H 1BB 5K)
  17. You'd rather see us looking bad?
  18. Better than nothing. Better than Mata.
  19. Top Remaining Free Agents (for what it's worth) Montgomery & Snell Clevinger, Lorenzen Bauer, Greinke, Cueto, Syndergaard, Lauer Duvall, Michael A Taylor, Tommy Pham, R Grossman JD Martinez (I might have missed a few.)
  20. Grapefruit League 8-1 BAL (+18 Run Diff) 6-3 BOS (+6) 4-2 PHI (+8) 4-3 NYY (+19) 5-4 HOU (+1) Cactus 8-2 LAD (+36) 6-2 TEX (+18) 7-3 COL (+14) 7-3 KCR (+4)
  21. The 27 and under Roster & Farm The "short list:" SP Bello, Crawford, Houck, Whitlock, Winckowski RP Murphy, Campbell, Fitts, Slaten, Sandlin, Mata, Walter, Perales, Wikelman C Teel, Wong, Joh Garcia 1B Casas, Jordan 2B Grissom, EValdez SS Mayer, Cespedes, Romero 3B Devers, Meidroth LF Duran, Zanetello, Castro CF Anthony, Rafaela RF Abreu, Bleis DH Yorke, Hickey
  22. He's not really spending less than before, even counting inflation. The problem arose when numerous teams decided to spend real big. The 2018-2019 seasons were the peak of big spending, but he was able to get to glory without spending like a maniac. I'm not defending JH. I think and wish he'd spend more, now and going forward. I don't see how signing Monty would wound his finances to a noticeable point If the plan is to double splurge in a year or two, I can stomach this, but I have serious doubts.
  23. I'd be surprised, but it does seem possible. We've still been spending a lot of money. Since 2019, we are a top 6-8 spending team. Since 2022, we are a top 9-11 spending team. It's not like we tried to totally tank, like other teams have. The many last place finishes suck, but we haven't really been a bottom 10 team, very often. Not that that should be the measuring stick. I'm hopeful we can reach glory, again, sometime, soon. We have some very promising young players and soon-to-be young players joining the 26 and 40. We have a good chance at being very good, again, and soon, if we can just get the pitching staff jacked up, somehow.
  24. I was thinking Chapman has more years, but yes, the opt out makes t0hem about the same. I'd still take the pitcher, and the choice isn't even close. Even if we could dump Yoshida's full deal in a trade, I'd take Gio, every day. I'm not even a Gio fan.
