    He may keep a straight face, but I think everyone will see right through it. Getting fans hopes up on Soto, then scaling back to the same ole-same ole, one more year, could really be the final straw for many fans. There may be some dumb Sox fans, but the vast majority already thinks it's been a sham for years, and they will know if it continues, or not. If we lose out on Soto, we absolutely have to sign Burnes or Fried, at the bare minimum for winter additions. For me, even that is not close to what I'd consider "making an effort to compete." We'd need something like Fried, Hoffman, Teoscar/Bregman/Adames plus a trade to convince me they are "all in." That may not even be enough, but at least an effort would be evident.

    We could very well keep up the sham, this winter. I'm hoping we don't, and I do think we will sign at least 2 longer term contracts, this winter, but one year deals seems to be a big trend with our team, since DD left the house.

    They better not be relying on Chapman, Hendriks and Fulmer to take up the slack from the Jansen/Martin departures. Our pen was somewhere between being near average and sucking, last year. So far, we haven't even stayed even. We can't count on things like, "we'll get a full year of Slaten," since someone else may get hurt. I do think Whitlock in the pen may help, a lot, but his health is always a concern. Adding 2 top SP'ers would take some slack and workload off the pen, while also pushing Crawford or Bello into the long role. That could help, but to me, we still need to add Scott, Hoffman, Estevez or Holmes- maybe trade for Helsley.

    Conference playoffs to go... The updated rankings came out, and it looks like Alabama will sneak in. The final seeding will be the top 4 filled by the highest ranked of the 5 major conferences, which is really messed up. Two winners from: 15 AZ St v 16 IA St 20 UNLV v 10 Boise St. 8 SMU v 17 Clemson (#12 MIA will be booted out) The current rankings: 1. ORE, 2. Texas, 3. Penn St. 4. ND, 5. GA, 6. Ohio St., 7 TN, 8 SMU, 9 IN, 10, Boise St, 11 Alabama, 12 MIA 13 Ole Miss, 14 So Carolina The final bracket will likely look like this: BYE 1-4: 1. Oregon- Penn St winner 2. Texas- Georgia winner 3. SMU or Boise St (if winners) 4. Boise St /SMU or AZ St/IA St winner 5. Oregan - Penn St. Loser 6. Texas (if loses to GA) or Notre Dame 7. Notre Dame (Georgia if TX wins) 8. Ohio St. 9. Tennessee 10. Indiana 11. Alabama 12. Worst winner from SMU-Clemson/ Boise St- UNLV/ AZ St-IA St (So Carolina, Ole Miss and Miami are out.) 1st round might be: AZ St @ Penn St Alabama @ Texas Indiana @ Notre Dame Tenn @ Ohio St.

    I'd like him added. Word is, some teams are looking at him as a SP'er. After Scott and Hoffman, I have him about even with Estevez.

    This is my projected opening day 8 man pen, assuming no injuries: Chapman Whitlock Slaten Hendriks Winckowski Criswell Guerrero Wilson I hope we add one from Hoffman, Holmes or Estevez (maybe trade for Fairbanks.)

    I'm only okay with trading him, once we have a solid back-up and Teel has proven he is at least decent.

    I think we need more focus on pitching, too, but our pitching was not awful, this year, and we'd be adding: Crochet, Giolito, Hendriks, Chapman and maybe full seasons from Whitlock, Slaten and others. We'll be losing Jansen, Martin, Pivetta, Anderson (52 IP), Keller (25) and others. I think we need to add Fried, then at least one from Scott/Hoffman/Holmes/Esteves or a trade for Crochet or Pablo Lopez. I'm not sure how much Soto gets in the way of this.

    I know. I'm not excited about Bregman, the player, either. He could be on a decline, already. I do love the idea of moving Devers to 1B/DH timeshare with Casas. It, along with Story's return would greatly improve our D. Add a defensive catcher, and we could go from bottom 5 on D to top 10-12.

    I don't disagree, but we have a few situations that lend themselves to short term solutions: 1. If we sign Soto, the budget will be a major issue, especially longer term. 2. We have Teel at catcher, that looks like the real deal, and already is okay on D. He's not ready, so certainly adding a 1 year catcher makes a lot of sense. 3. We have Anthony, Campbell and Mayer banging on the door, but we are not sure if they are totally ready to be handed a FT job, and with some, where they might play. We might not want to sign a guy to 3+ years that may block one. (I don't see this as a major issue, as none need to be on the 40, this year.) 4. We've had great luck with one year OF'ers: Pillar> Renfroe (we made him into a one and done)> Duvall> O'Neall. 5. Pitchers on long term deals are almost always trouble, but I'm sick of one and done projects for pitchers. I'd be okay, if we sign Fried, another top RP'er and one other big name, and the rest be one and dones.

    If we lose out on Soto, Adamaes, Teoscar, Burnes and Fried, I'd rather have Bregman than someone else. That's not to say I want him.

    The let down from missing out on Soto will be huge, and it's hard to imagine any scrambling that could take place to make fans happy. Bregman, Adames or Teoscar? Burnes and or Fried (Both, if we miss on one of the above 3?) A trade for Lopez, Crochet or Castillo, if we get just one from Burnes and Fried? Scott, Hoffman, Holmes or Estevez This is like minimum.

    I'm fine with a few one year deals, especially if the guy is 37, but yes, if all we sign are one and dones, it won't be pretty.

    They should be okay, but if the next guys we add are like Chapman and Wilson, I'm bummed.

    If Chapman as the closer and Wilson as the lefty mid-inning guy ares a sign of things to come, I'm not impressed, at all.

    I'm wondering, if we can even view Wong as our longtime back-up to Teel. I'd be fine adding a capable catcher on a 2-3 year deal, and then think about trading Wong. If we think Wong can improve his defense, maybe a 1 year gut is fine.

    6 BB/9 over the last 4 years is shocking. 6 hits per 9 helps keep those runners from scoring, but yes... Heart attack city. I'm guessing they are making him the closer.

    I'm thinking the same thing on "if all things are close to equal." I think taxes plays into the final bottom line on the money part, so that may help when comparing to the NYY, NYM and LAD. I'm gonna kick myself, if Soto signs somewhere else.

    It seems that Chapman does not really have to be better than 2021 to 2024 to think it was an okay deal. He turns 37, before the season starts. These numbers suggest he has not shown steady decline after reaching age 33. OPS Against .678 in 2021 .654 in 2022 .558 in 2023 .636 in 2024 K/BB: 2.6>1.5>2.9>2.5 FIP: 3.99> .4.57> 2.52> 3.04 2021-2024 combined: 3.60 ERA (118 ERA+) 3.41 FIP 1.33 WHIP 14.4 K/9 but 6.0 BB/9 is frightening.(just 6 hits per 9 with a 0.9 HR/9.)
