    Wong was at .670 in about 500 PAs before 2024, so maybe that is more like his norm, but then again, you do kinda expect a player to improve over his first 500 PAs. Maybe he's a ..680 to .720 guy, so if Narvaez can hit .660-.690 he might be the better catcher. .700 would likely win him the job.

    I'm not sure how much different it looked on 9/20/24 than 8/1/24 or 9/1/24, except for guys on the IL. We had Danny Jansen, Luis Garcia and Sims, that on the surface would look like we were trying to compete for game 162.

    I wasn't trying to say the second offer was more, but I will add that Moncada did not have Anthony, Mayer and Campbell in the system with him, either. The Sale package was and should have been bigger. He was proven to be the best of the best and had one more year of control.

    Agreed. I've thought all along the extra year of control would be a factor, but not the overriding one. None have clearly made a case for being a starter on day one. Mayer has played well, but our SS is healthy and playing well, this spring. There is still time for things to change the choices, one way or another, but to me, it looks like all 3 start in AAA. The bench will be: Narvaez, Refsnyder, Yoshida and Romy (DHam starts at 2B.) If Abreu is on the IL, I think Thompson might be #26.

    Very true. I will add that the Sale trade was for 3 years of control vs 2 for Crochet, but the prospects traded were ranked by soxprospects,com as... 1. Moncada 5. Kopech 7. Basabe NR Victor Diaz The Crochet deal: 4. Teel 5. Montgomery 8. Meidroth 18. Wikelman Both trades were monumental.

    Assuming Devers plays his whole career with the Sox, where does he end up on the alltime Sox HR leader board after 2025 and after his career ends? 521 Williams 483 Ortiz 452 Yaz 382 Rice 379 Evans 274 Manny 230 Mo 223 Doer 222 Foxx 210 Rico 200 Devers I'll say he ends up 7th after 2025, behind Manny and somewhere around 460 and 3rd on the list.

    This whole thing does seem to make the transition to DH an easier call, but let's see how time works on that choice.

    I agree. Crochet needs to be extended. What we gave up for just 2 years, seems like a big overpay.

    Agreed. I do not think Wong's 2024 offensive numbers are sustainable, and his defense will need to improve to stay as the #1 catcher. I'm hopeful Narvaez can hit well enough to play more. His AAA numbers were rather encouraging: .247 21 97 in 762 PAs. (.371 OBP and .400 SLG) .230 with 15 HRs and a .333 OBP would likely be enough to win the majority of the starts.

    Okay. I took the word "urgency" to mean something needs to be done beyond the lack of visible fretting and talking about concerns.

    We have 3 guys who can be added to the 60 Day IL to make additions to the 40 by opening day: Murphy, Perales and Penrod. As of now, assuming Abreu starts the season on the 10 Day IL, and no prospect makes the 40 or 26, our bench might be Yoshida, Romy, Narvaez and Grissom. That leaves just Sabol (C) and Sogard (UT) as position players on the 40 in AAA. (Jh Garcia will likely start in AA.) We will almost certainly be adding 2-3 position players to the 40 for opening day and 1-2 might make the 26. I doubt any prospect is added to the 40 and not the 26, so that is one key component to who is chosen. Team years of control might be the deciding factor, if it's a close call. I could see us adding Thompson to the 40 and 26, and starting Grissom in AAA. We may hold off adding others to the 40 (and maybe 26) until we know more, but Eaton's ability to play multiple positions might give him the nod. I doubt Toro is an option. I'd love to see a prospect or two make the 26, but it's looking less likely, unless a new injury occurs.

    So, we need to find and obtain one, now? That would show urgency?

    I was very disappointed in Wong's defense in 2024. I expected growth, and it seemed like he got worse. I'm wondering if Narvaez becomes the 60%+ catcher by season's end. That may depend on how each is doing at the plater, but I hope defense takes priority. The Sox will likely see a below average fWAR from our catcher position, but if we can end up near average, it would be a nice gain over 2024.

    As with many teams in MLB, how much injuries take their toll on the team could be the deciding factor. We know we will have some. We will likely start the season with 2-3 players on the 10 day IL, likely Crawford and Bello and maybe Abreu.
