I totally agree, Leon is and should be the front runner, but apparently Swihart is still in the running (not Vaz), according to JF's most recent statement.

But, he said Swihart can challenge Leon for that role, so it isn't a "no question" situation.

Just strange that he didn't even mention the chance of Vaz winning the job.

He also said this about our catching situation, which only adds to the mystery... Farrell said that as it stands, Sandy Leon is heading to camp as the No. 1 catcher, but Blake Swihart will be able to challenge him for that role. Britton notes that Farrell didn’t mention Christian Vazquez. However, Vazquez is out of minor league options, and the team isn’t sure how Swihart’s ankle will be able to hold up for regular work behind the dish, so Britton’s interpretation of the situation is that Leon and Vazquez will open the year as Boston’s catching tandem.

Actually, I figured it was probably sarcastic, but I still wanted to point out how little these organizational depth signings really matter, in terms of the luxury tax budget issue.

Farrell did make it sound like Vaz was out of the running for the number one catcher slot, but kind of implied he'll be the number 2 no matter who the number one is. I'll be disappointed, if we end up trading Vaz, but since Leon and Vaz are out of options, and there does seem to be some sort of doghouse feeling towards Vaz, I guess it could happen.

It's not impossible to compare eras, but it is hard, as I stated, for me, because I was in a different mindset back and age group in the 70's than I am now, and I had yet to be exposed to what great Sox pitching was to come, and how fun it is to enjoy watching guys like Clemens, Pedro, Schill (briefly) Beckett and Lester. I loved watching and listening to the Sox of the 70's, but watching Manny & Papi lead us to multiple rings and break the long cycle of disappointment was magical in a very different way. That's what "makes it hard" for me to compare the two duos. I just can't rank one above the other: it would feel like I am cheapening one of the eras.

Yes, but it was hard to know it at the time. There "was always next year" as old Sox fans know all too well. I guess I learned some lessons back then- hard ones.

MLBTR... ...Farrell said the final two [rotation] spots will be a competition between Drew Pomeranz, Steven Wright and Eduardo Rodriguez.... ...via Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal, per Farrell, there’s still a “note of competition” at the hot corner between Pablo Sandoval, Brock Holt and Rule 5 pick Josh Rutledge. Sandoval’s contract, presumably, makes him the favorite, but I’d wager that he’ll be on a short leash and will have to show semblance of rebound potential in Spring Training and/or early in the year.

I lived em both, and those Sox teams will always have a special place in my heart. I was 16 in 1975, and that season and the ones that followed were glorious, even with coming so close to a ring. I've never felt love for a team or players like I did back then. It was special. I see the Manny-Papi duo in a whole different perspective. I was much older and had lost some of that childhood awe, but I was starving for a championship that had eluded us for way too long. The three rings we got with these two studs was pretty damn awesome. I just have a hard time comparing the two. They both mean so much to me, but in different ways. I'm fine with others saying these two are better than those two, but to me, they are incomparable. I love both duos too much to rate one better than the other.

It's hard to compare eras, but that Lynn-Rice duo was very very special. Too bad they only got one playoff chance together.

Neftali Feliz signed for $5.35M. He had an awful 2015 season, but has been pretty good otherwise. I'm not sure how he got his K/9 rate up by about 3 per 9, so maybe there's something I'm missing, but this looks like a steal for the Brewers.

That whole era was sickening. Fisk. Lynn. Burleson. Many others shipped off. Makes you realize how good we have it under Henry.

I know you said it before the playoffs, but be serious, would you be thrilled starting Timlin, Bauer or Merritt instead? I'm not "thrilled" about Price's post season starts, and I am somewhat concerned that it may be more than just a fluke or small scattered sample size anomaly, but I'll take Price this October over Buch, Pom, Wright and ERod again, if those choices were all available.

I wasn't coming close to implying anything about Moncada vs RHPs. I actually agree with you. I was just joking around about Beni and his poor splits vs LHPs in a teenie tiny sample size in the bigs last year.

Good point on the who plays 1B after we pinch hit for Moreland when they bring a lefty in to face him late in games. - If it's HanRam, we lose the DH. - If it's Holt, uh-oh.

Have you seen Beni vs LHPs? Just kidding, the sample size in the bigs and at AA are tiny as most splits vs lefties are.

True enough, and with close to $9M available, we might be able to fill two needs at the deadline. The longer we wait to make a trade, the lower the prorated cost of the incoming contract.
