  1. I set myself up for that one.
  2. East Notes: JDM, Red Sox By Connor Byrne | March 3, 2018 at 11:04pm CDT Newly signed Red Sox slugger J.D. Martinez figures to spend most of his time at designated hitter, though the team is planning how to set up its outfield when he does factor in as a defender. “At home he’ll play left field and if somehow he plays somewhere on the road here, he’ll play right field,” manager Alex Cora told Jason Mastrodonato of the Boston Herald and other reporters Saturday. Cora went on to reveal that right fielder Mookie Betts could move to center during road games in which Martinez plays the field. Of course, it’s unclear how often this will come up for Boston, which already has an excellent outfield trio of Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr. (center) and Andrew Benintendi (left). Unlike those three, Martinez has struggled of late in the field, where he has posted minus-27 Defensive Runs Saved and a minus-24.9 Ultimate Zone Rating since 2016.
  3. 2014-2017 Base Running Numbers from fangraph's value page: (Note: games played has a lot of impact on these numbers.) 29.9 Betts 18.8 Bogey 11.0 Bradley 10.3 Holt (If you counted this number per PA, Holt wouldprobably be number 1.) 2.3 Beni (low PAs) 1.9 Swihart 1.2 Marrero 0.1 Devers -2.4 MOreland -5.3 Vazquez -6.1 Leon -9.2 HRam -11.5 Pedey (Can we stop with the Pedey batting 1st and 2nd slot talk?) -22.1 Papi
  4. DD has added Price, Pom (with Ben's prospects), Sale (with Ben's prospects), Elias and Velazquez. In the pen: Kimbrel, Smith, Thornburg Ben: Porcello, ERod, Wright, Johnson, Beeks, Shephers, Kelly, Hembree, Maddox and Buttrey Theo: Workman, Barnes and R Scott (I may have gotten 1 or two guys wrong or missed somebody here.)
  5. It's not really the financial penalties for going $40M over the limit that are worrisome, it's the draft and international signing pools that would be most hurtful, especially to a team looking at a cliff and many claiming we will rebuild the farm somehow- some way. This is not a step that would help us rebuild farm.
  6. The AL East is back to being the toughest division in MLB... IMO.
  7. There's got to be a few unsigned vets (not named Buch) waiting for a minor league deal and an outside chance at the bigs.
  8. Is this a word jumble game?
  9. That was minor. LOL My bad. LOL. Price the year before and Pom mid season.
  10. 2 years in a row without adding a significant starter to the rotation. We have a lot of promise but a lot of worry as well. Is Price really healthy, and will he stay healthy all year? Will Sale get over his late season swoons? Will Porcello come back or repeat 2017? Is Pom's arm trouble just a minor issue or a hint of something bad down the road? Can Wright return to pre-injury form? How long will it take ERod to return? Will ERod's surgery finally end all his knee issues that have affected his play for years? Can Johnson, Velazquez, Elias or some other guy step up bigtime?
  11. Sure, with a side bet on Hosmer vs Morrison on OPS and 400+ PAs each. Last 3 years, which includes 2 good years from Hosmer as he is up-down-up-down... (I'm not hedging my bet, as I do think Duda and Morrison will do better this year, but if they just come close, it's an obvious win for Duda and Morrison, who were both signed for a small fraction of Hosmer's cost.) OPS Hosmer .822 (.169 ISO) LDuda .812 (.248 ISO) Last 4 years (2 good and 2 bad for Hosmer) L Duda .818 (.242 ISO) Hosmer .799 (.160 ISO) Horrible numbers for a 1Bman
  12. He wouldn't have Manny like numbers being on the DL half the time.
  13. I was Buch's biggest supporter on that other site. I don't want him back. I suppose a minor league deal can't hurt, but I'd rather we find someone else.
  14. If they are within 50 PAs, okay, though I'd prefer a bet on OPS. I'll take Morrison and give you 3:2 odds.
  15. We'll see. He sucks on defense now. He's a roller coaster on offense. He's always played in a low pressure city. He's not worth much more than what Morrison got. He's really not good at all, except every other year. On waht basis do you think he will suddenly become consistent? Even then, he's not great during his good years, and one can easily argue he won't repeat his outlier year that just happened to be a contract year on a team with no playoff hopes. Hosmer at $40M/4 is worse than signing Morrison.
  16. I think you value just last year's numbers too highly. Go back 2, 3 or 4 years in sample size and Duda blows Hosmer away in offense, especially power, something we sorely needed.
  17. No, he'd have been on the DL half his career.
  18. I agree, but if JBJ is in one of his all-too-often slumps, and Beni continues to struggle vs LHPs, it wouldn't kill us to give them one of the 3 nights off each. They need rest anyways, so plan it out for NL away games.,
  19. JD can certainly rake, when on the field. I'm hoping being a FT DH can help him get 650+ PAs for the second time in his career. (He's actually only been over 517 once, but some seasons were not all due to injury.)
  20. Baseball inflation differs from real inflation.
  21. I don't like any part of the deal. I wouldn't have wanted him at $19M/1 or $38M/2 years. He's a zero WAR player every other year and now sucks on defense. There's very little upside, despite his age. Morrison & Duda will have better seasons at a fraction of the cost and years. I'm sticking with my 25% money and 50% length, which comes to $36M/4. Maybe I'd go as far as $40M/4.
  22. Indeed. The guy started pitching FT at age 20, and people want to hold his first few years against him. It's very common for pitchers to do better once they reach prime. Porcello is not the same pitcher he was from age 20-23 or 24. The numbers show it, and each sample size is very large... large enough to ve valid and telling. first 4 years: (45th in IP at ages 20-23) 48-42 4.55 (107 ERA- and 1.42 WHIP) last 4 years (9th in IP at ages 25-28) 57-49 3.98 (94 ERA- and 1.24 WHIP) Porcello just turned 29. I'm going with the chance he'll be more like the last 4 years than his first 4 years. You guys can go with 4.25 and think he sucks.
  23. You chose 3 years. I can see why. They were the 3 years he was with us, and he's only been really good in 1 of the 3. I arbitrarily chose 4 years, so it comes out he did very well in 2 of his last 4 years. He's earned his $40M/2, in my book. Let's see what he gives us the next two. We signed him to 4 prime years and only 4 prime years, something not very common these days.
  24. He didn't get paid $20M for all those years. If you are going to use $20M as the number to criticize him over, then look at the two years he's been paid that amount. 33-21 3.86 13th in fWAR 25th in ERA- (87) 22nd in WHIP (1.19) which is ahead of our $31M starter, but you choose to bash Porcello- the guy who actually takes the ball every 5 days. He started in the majors at a very young age.
