  1. Here's the numbers on JD's defense: Career: UZR/150 LF: -4.7 (2336 innings) RF: -6.5 (3717 innings) Getting worse, though 2016/2017 LF: -18.2/-6.9 RF: -21.5/-14.8 DRS: Career LF: -4 (-4 last 2 yrs combined and 0 prior 2 yrs combined) RF: -28 (-27 last 2 yrs combined and -1 previous 4 yrs combined) Nunez has very little experience in the OF, but is numbers look good out there: Career: LF: +20.8 (283 innings) -2 DRS RF: +7.0 (39 innings) -1 DRS
  2. Agreed, but Nunez isn't much better in LF.
  3. Yes, Nunez can play LF. I want him at 2B until Pedey returns. I get the idea of trying to keep JD healthy, but giving HRam time at DH has benefits as well. Plus, JD wants to play OF, so I'll throw him a few bones and cross my fingers.
  4. JD should play LF in Fenway and maybe RF elsewhere, whenever an OF'er needs a rest. This will allow HRam to DH (and rest some) and Moreland to get some ABs at 1B. I'm expecting JD to play about 20 games in the OF, assuming no OF'er goes on the DL.
  5. Yes, we are done. JD will not play RF in Fenway.
  6. Major penalties for going over $40M over.
  7. JD Drew took 7 weeks, and fans loved him from day one. (sarcasm alert)
  8. I'm willing to give him a long look.
  9. I'd try to keep both. Leon gets the best out of our staff, and having 3 catchers (one who can play elsewhere) allows us to PH for our catchers more often.
  10. MLBTR reports... Feb. 26: Nearly a full week after agreeing to terms with Martinez, the Red Sox have formally announced his five-year deal. He’ll be introduced at a press conference at 9am ET.
  11. Not a bad idea, but haven't we too many recovering injured pitchers as it is?
  12. There's not enough money left to get "quality", unless we get someone who over performs expectations. I'm against this idea, but we could trade JBJ and Johnson for a quality pitcher and go with JD in LF, HRam at DH and Moreland/Swihart at 1B. The only other way I can see is to find a taker for HRam and maybe Holt, while we pay a major portion of his deal, and then we can afford a better pitcher.
  13. If any of these "bubble players" who are out of options deserves a chance, I think it is Johnson. I like Swihart's chances at making the 25 man roster, and I think Marrero's days are numbers. I guess, if Marco and Pedey are on the DL, he may hang on until the first one returns.
  14. We're too close to the major penalty limit to sign Cobb, Arrieta or Lynn. By my calculations, we might have $4-6M to spend, unless we dump salary somewhere. Elias had a little stretch of success in Seattle before coming to Boston and dealing with injury. How can you proclaim Velazquez was given a chance and failed? Look, I'm not happy with our starter depth either, and hopefully ERod is not out for too long. I cans ee why we chose not to spend large at SP'er this year. Maybe one of these guys will do okay as a placeholder for ERod/Wright... Elias Velazquez Johnson Beeks Haley I wonder, if they've considered stretching Workman out to a starter role.
  15. Well, if his injury affects his future career, the opt-outs are meaningless, we'll have him for 5 years.
  16. My point was intended to portray the idea of spreading the risk as being better in light of the low cost of LoMo's deal and the expected bargain for Moustakas and probably Cobb or Lynn.
  17. About our Sox prospects... http://m.mlb.com/prospects/2018?list=bos Red Sox's 2018 preseason top 30 prospects list WWW.MLB.COM When the Red Sox hired David Dombrowski as president of baseball operations in August 2015, they had a big league club headed toward its second consecutive last-place finish, yet hope in the form of the best farm system in baseball. Fast forward to today, and they're the two-time defending American
  18. Barfield is 29. He's ranked 56th on soxprospects.com. He only hit over 13 HRs once before 2016. He was a big star down here in Sugar Land. He hit 27 HRs in 510 ABs. (I saw him once.) Last year, he hit 28 HRs in just 355 ABs (with 49 XBHs). Take a look, but I doubt he makes it.
  19. A “medical matter” ... prevented the Red Sox from finalizing the five-year, $110MM agreement they reached with free agent J.D. Martinez on Monday. Former big leaguer J.D. Drew can relate, having agreed to a five-year, $70MM deal with the BoSox in 2007 that took seven weeks to become official because they had concerns with his right shoulder. Drew – who, like Martinez, had agent Scott Boras as representation – looked back on the experience with Rob Bradford of WEEI. “My first words were, ’There’s nothing wrong with my shoulder.’ I was like you can put whatever you want in there,” Drew recalled. “But [boras] said, ’I have to protect you.’ From that point on I gave him complete freedom to do whatever he needed to do.” Eleven years later, Drew remains a believer in Boras’ tactics, and he expects the agent’s expertise to benefit Martinez. “I guarantee Scott and J.D. are on a page where they know what’s happening, he’s completely assured by Scott that they know what they have to do,” he said. “He’s going to fight, he’s going to fight, he’s going to fight and get the best he can and make sure it’s fine with him.”
  20. Yes, Elias should be in the mix. MLBTR reports.... The Red Sox expect to begin the year without either left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez or righty Steven Wright, manager Alex Cora told reporters, including Jen McCaffrey of MassLive.com, on Sunday (Twitter link). Rodriguez is working back from the right knee surgery he underwent in October, and Wright had a season-ending procedure on his left knee last May. With those two on the shelf, the Red Sox will choose among Hector Velazquez, Roenis Elias and the out-of-options Brian Johnson to serve as their season-opening fifth starter
  21. Who is fascinated with Johnson? He's maybe a 6th or 7th starter, at best. I have Wright and Velazquez ahead of him. He might get a look before Velazquez due to being out of options, but that doesn't mean we're fixated on him. (BTW, I've been talking about Cobb all winter.)
  22. The LoMo deal is a 1 year risk. If he does great, then we'd want him another year with the vesting $8M year 2. Moose might get a similar deal to this. Imagine getting both for $11M/1 with the second year coming in at maybe $16M/2! $27M/2 for both M & M! Wow! That's about half the cost of JDM at 2 years before his opt out.
  23. What's better? 3B Devers 1B HRam-Moreland DH JDM-HRam or 3B Moustakas-Devers 1B Morrison-HRam DH Devers-HRam The second option would be much cheaper.,,,maybe even cheaper by enough to add Cobb or Lynn.
  24. Morrison will earn $5.5MM in 2018, Joel Sherman of the New York Post tweets. The vesting option is worth $8MM and comes with a $1MM buyout.
  25. What if we could have gotten 3 from these guys: Morrison, Moustakas, Arrieta, Lynn, Cobb instead of JD & Moreland?
