Yes, and that's less than what Moreland gets per year, which was my point. It's not "hindsight" with Duda. I understand an argument can be made on Morrison & Moose, but not with Duda.

HRam needs 497 PAs to vest, but perhaps more importantly he needs to pass a team physical to vest. I do have high hopes the surgery will help. HRam is a hell of a hitter, when fully healthy, and apparently he's got himself into great shape (losing 15 pounds). He'll get his chance to shine. He wants another big contract, so even if he doesn't vest, he needs to hit well in 496 PAs with us.

I'm a fan of Sonny Gray, but he's a huge question mark. His FIP went from 3.25 to 4.87 with NYY. (His career with OAK was 3.56) His HR/9 went from 0.9 to1.5. Price is a question mark, granted, but Gray is a much larger one. And, what about the 56 year old CC? He had 3 seasons in a row over 4.70 before the last two good years. I guess there's no chance, in your mind, he goes south this year in a major way. Tanaka? Your two young guys, Severino and Montgomery, looked really good, and I guess young starters like them never have setbacks or bumps in the road. All is rosy in NY this year. Nothing can go wrong.

We retooled, too, in case you didn't notice. We added JD. We, essentailly, added Smith and Thornburg. We will get more PAs from Devers, Nunez and others and none or way less from .644 Leon (301) .709 Young (276) .593 Marrero (188) .548 Holt (164) .558 Rutledge (118) .622 Pablo (108 PAs) .595 Davis (38) Yes, we'll have a much better chance with Price staying healthy, but I'm curious why you have more faith in Gray being healthy than Price.

Yes, but how do you get rid of it all? Nobody is going to trade for Pedey and pay his full salary. DFA'ing him does not take us off the hooks, so once again, HOW?

They would not sign him for even $11M after this year, even if he hits .280 30 100. Look what Duda got. He's a good no field- decent hit player comp. (Actually, Duda has been more consistent with his bat-- when not hurt.)

It was a dumb deal at the time. The only mental gymnastics going on, is posters trying to justify the stupidity and using the "hindsight" argument in acrobatic fashion. Saying that signing Moreland gave us leverage in the JD negotiations is pulling a Nadia Comanichi. Once we signed the weak hitting (for a 1Bman) Moreland to fill one of the two power slots we had open, we HAD TO SIGN JD. We could have had Duda and JD in foresight. I get the hindisght argument on Moose and Morrison to some extent, but the writing was on the wall, even at the time of the Moreland signing that this winter was going to be different. Was Moreland going to get $13M/2 from someone else the day we signed him? There was no hurry. There was no added leverage. It was dumb then; it's dumber now.

Duda was projected to make less than Moreland from day one and certainly at the time Moreland was signed.

Our best time to trade HRam was the after 2016, and even then we'd have had to pay part of his contract.

We wouldn't lose draft picks. It would just move down from like 24 to 34. It's the international pool money loss that hurts more. How much is all that worth in money, in your opinion.

Just because we went a long way towards solving our power outage issue with the JD signing, doesn't mean we had to let a golden opportunity to add power at the most power position in mlb, first basee, go by. To say we signed Moreland to, "avoid getting into a position of desperation in the JDM negotiations (with the option of playing Moreland at first and Hanley at DH, we were able to wait him out as long as we needed to) makes absolutely no sense to me. Had we not signed JD, we'd have needed more power from 1B than we do now with Moreland-HRam- not the same. Yes, the Moose, Duda and Morrison signing for way less than expected makes the signing look worse in hindsiaght, but the signing was horrible at the time, too.

The marlins might be playing their actual 25 man roster players more than other teams. Our top AB players are.... 42 Travis (to AAA) 36 Swihart (to bench) 35 Castillo (AAA) 34 De Jesus (AAA) 32 Devers 31 Tavarez (AAA) 29 HRam 27 Lin (AAA) Miami 36 S Castro 34 L Brinson 32 G Cooper 31M Rojas 30 D Dietrich 29 Van Slyke I'm no expert on Miami's roster, but maybe this is why.

Either we DFA or phantom DL marrero, or Holt starts out in AAA. It's not between Swihart and either of these two. It's choosing one between those two, withLin having an outside shot. We could keep both for 4 days by starting Velazquez in AAA and calling him up for game 5.

So why would anyone else pay HRam $11M, when they could have had Morrison for less?

...and watch our staff ERA increase by 0.25 or more and be done with any hopes of a 3rd straight division title. Why DFA Leon just to keep Holt & Marrero on the 25?

I'm not trading HRam, so I can keep Holt. I actually think HRam will have a decent season, and since I hated the Moreland signing, I feel we need HRam now more than a few million in payroll relief. Note: we'd maybe save $6-9M not $11M, and that would have been enough to sign Duda, Moose or even Morrison, but why would anyone who passed on Morrison, Duda or Moose and to pay their salary for HRam?
