    It's not about having balls. It's a dumb trade idea that would cripple us starting next year. Plus, getting Machado doesn't improve our odds all that much for 2018.

    I've always like to use this analogy: if a fastball pitcher threw the ball so hard a catcher could not catch it, or a curveball pitcher threw such a wicked curve that catchers missed it, we'd have no problem with the pitcher, yet when a knuckleballer throws a pitch that is hard to catch, we tend to blame the pitcher. If a pitch is so hard to catch, imagine trying to hit it. Vaz is doing a great job catching Wright, so what's not to love about his success?

    I wouldn't trade Devers for machado, Britton and enough cash to keep us under the $40M line this year. 2 month rental trades suck!

    There's also a chance Nunez's knee improves and/or Holt has built the stamina to last the season. I'm still not sure that even if Pedey never plays again this year, 2B will be our biggest need at the deadline.

    There are countless plays that are not called errors that make a difference in runs scored or not scored. Our defense has not been all that bad, despite 2B and 3B. I'm liking what I see from Devers at 3B. He's progressed much farther than I expected, but he started out pretty damn low. Holt has looked batter at 2B, but he can't play everyday and remain productive. Pedey's return could be a huge boost to our defense and our offense vs lefties. I'm still hopeful, but we'll know more at the deadline.

    I've been one of Devers defense harshest critics. I'm happy with his growth on D. He still has a way to go, but he's done better than I expected.

    We're paying HRam anyways for 2018. I'd have been fine with keeping HRam for 2018, as long as he never reached the vest. I thought that was why we got Moreland, so we could platoon HRam and prevent the vest. They started HRam FT, and lo and behold, he started hot. That must have scared the bejezus out of DD. HRam's slump gave DD the chance to pounce, and pounce he did. I loved the move, yes for 2019, but I knew it would hurt us vs lefties. I had hoped Pedey would take up that slack, but...

    I'm not arguing for keeping HRam. I loved the move. The fact remains, the move hurt us vs lefties. Plus, if we took him back now (not saying I want to), he wouldn't get enough PAs to vest. BTW, it's 675 vs LHPs at .672 and 2151 PAs at .813 so far this year. Last year we had 1400+ vs LHPs. Someone batting 4th vs LH'd starters, might get 150 PAs vs lefties over a full season. HRam had 123 last year vs lefties, so your 20 PAs is not accurate.

    I firmly believe it was the shoulder injury. HRam was always one of the very best vs lefties.

    I don't think we're the only highly competitive team that has players up high in the order with terrible splits, but I do agree we'd be better off with Bogey up 2nd vs lefties. I've been saying that for months and years. Our management made some huge mistakes. It is what it is. We're up against a stiff tax and penalty, if we spend much more. We have a solid core of young players, and some are still learning on the job. While it's not ideal, it's not horrible either. Both Devers and Beni have more than decent numbers, so far. We're not the only team with a couple of 21-23 year olds in big slots.

    Beni will go through some tough stretches- probably more than older players, but he and Devers are still ML ready on offense. Beni is fine on defense. I'd rather have someone else up 2nd vs LHPs (Bogey), but Beni is fine vs RHPs and will probably always will be. Just because it might have helped both to have a little more time in the minors does not mean they both can't be a big plus to us as they learn and grow on the job. Both have been so far. 162 game averages: Beni .281 22 96 (.361/.463/.824) Devers .259 27 82 (.310/.447/.757) UZR/150 2017 to 2018 Beni (LF) -0.3 > +2.0 Beni (CF) +1.2> -6.0 (179 innings) Devers (3B) -11.7 > -3.2 They are both doing fine. I do not think the early call up is messing up their psyches or growth curve. The bumps along the way do affect the big club, but when you look at other options we have, both are way better than anything else we have. They are not being damaged by playing on the big stage. Both can handle it.

    No doubt about it. We could actually use HRam's bat vs LHPs right now. He's still a way better option than Swihart or Nunez at DH. It was the 2019 option. Period.

    I'm waiting on Pedey, but right now, our biggest issue is hitting lefties not 2b. Nunez and holt can bridge us to Pedey or the deadline. If we need a 2bman at the deadline, I'd look for one who kills lefties.

    Devers was probably called up a little early, but I was fine with it then and still am now.

    Sub .300 OBP guys don't get big paychecks either. The only thing keeping JBJ's OBP above the Mendoza line is his HBPs. (Hyperbole alert)

    No thanks to the .690 career vs LHPs OF'er. We don't have the resources to make a deal for someone who doesn't address our biggest current need... hitting vs lefties. We are not really sure what our biggest need will be at the deadline, so I think we'd be better off waiting on Pedey and see what we need in July.

    I like seeing Bogey in the top 3, and if the studies are accurate, having JD up 4th not 3rd, should be helpful. Our 5 slot needs to give us a boost now that Bogey is up 3rd. (Bogey hit .918 in the 5 slot, while nobody else has been over .705 (Moreland .689/Devers .541).

    Another downside to continually signing big free agents is that you don't ever have a down year where you get higher draft picks. I doubt the Sox ever have a fire sale under DD like we did with the AGon/Crawford/Beckett deal or the Lester/Lackey/Peavy/Miller/Doubront sell off. You have to have a losing season to make that choice. The Yanks made a very strategic choice to deal some talent, and they maximized the return for the most part. They may not have signed as many big ticket FAs as the Sox recently, but the Stanton trade was like a big signing. The one thing the Yankees rebuilding effort does show is that it is possible to stay somewhat competitive while you rebuild, and that it takes some serious risk-taking to make it happen. I'm not sure, if DD would ever have the balls to trade off top talent, even during a down year. It seems like a problem we have, and it's hard to view winning as a problem, is that we may not reach a sell-off period until 2020. By then, many of our big return players will be gone or re-upped at massive contractual costs and won't be tradable/
